The Shrinking Forest

2163 Words
The first rays of dawn never truly reached the heart of the Moon Forest. Towering ancient trees stretched high into the heavens, their silver leaves weaving together to form a living canopy that allowed only scattered beams of moonlight and sunlight to touch the forest floor. Tiny glowing flowers bloomed beneath twisted roots, while pale blue mist drifted lazily between enormous tree trunks that had stood for thousands of years. It was beautiful. But today... The beauty carried an unsettling silence. Astera slowly opened her eyes. She had spent the night inside the ruins of an abandoned watchtower, one of the many forgotten structures hidden throughout the Moon Forest. Before sleeping, she had reinforced every entrance with tiny alarm devices made from enchanted crystals and thin mana threads. None of them had been triggered. The tiny dragon stretched lazily before hopping onto her shoulder. "Morning," Astera whispered with a smile. The little creature rubbed its fluffy head against her cheek before letting out a cheerful chirp. Astera unpacked the remaining food from her bag. A loaf of herb bread. Dried berries. Smoked fish. She broke the fish into small pieces and placed them on a flat stone. The tiny dragon attacked the meal with surprising enthusiasm. Astera laughed softly. "You eat like you've been starving for years." The little creature ignored her and continued eating. After finishing breakfast, Astera checked every invention she still possessed. Two grappling cables. Three smoke capsules. Four magnetic token collectors. Six miniature crystal sensors. One mana compass. Several mechanical traps she had built from branches, gears, and enchanted crystals she had collected inside the forest. She nodded with satisfaction. "Not perfect..." "But enough." She packed everything neatly into her backpack before opening the notebook that had become her greatest weapon. Every battle. Every opponent. Every observation. Every weakness. She had written them all. One page read: Fire Pack Exceptional offensive strength. Emotional fighters. Consume mana quickly during prolonged battles. Another page. Earth Pack Powerful defense. Excellent endurance. Heavy movements reduce mobility. Next. Ocean Tide Pack Balanced abilities. Excellent teamwork. Masters of healing and adaptability. Finally. Storm Pack Fastest among all packs. Difficult to predict. Prefer speed over endurance. Astera closed the notebook. "Every strength..." "...creates a weakness." The tiny dragon chirped in agreement. Suddenly... Every academy bracelet began glowing. Blue light illuminated the forest. Students everywhere stopped what they were doing. A familiar voice echoed across the Moon Forest. "Attention, participants." Astera looked up. "The Moon Forest Trial has entered its final stage." A magical map appeared above every bracelet. At first... Nothing happened. Then... The outer edges of the map slowly turned crimson. The red light spread inward like flowing blood. Gasps echoed throughout the forest. "What is that?" "The safe zones..." "They're disappearing!" The academy's voice continued. "Beginning immediately..." "All outer regions have become forbidden zones." "Participants remaining inside the red area after fifteen minutes will be eliminated automatically." "Proceed toward the central sanctuary." The map continued shrinking. Astera watched silently. "So..." "They're forcing us together." Around her, the forest itself began changing. Ancient roots burst from the earth. Entire pathways disappeared beneath moving vines. Rivers shifted their course as if guided by invisible hands. Massive stone pillars slowly emerged from beneath the ground, blocking familiar routes. Even the trees seemed to move. The Moon Forest wasn't merely shrinking. It was alive. It was reshaping itself. The tiny dragon pressed itself against Astera's shoulder. "I know." "I've never seen anything like this either." Without wasting another second, she began moving. --- Across the Moon Forest... Chaos erupted. Students abandoned their hiding places and rushed toward the remaining safe zones. Former allies suddenly became competitors once again. No one wanted to lose. A narrow stone bridge became the first battlefield. Five Fire Pack students stood on one side. Three Earth Pack students blocked the other. "Move!" One Fire Pack student launched a blazing sphere of fire. The Earth Pack answered immediately. A thick stone wall erupted from the bridge. The fire exploded against solid rock. Before the smoke cleared... Both groups transformed. Massive wolves appeared. Crimson flames danced across the Fire Pack wolves' fur, while the Earth wolves' bodies were covered in natural stone armor. The bridge shook beneath their collision. --- Not far away... An Ocean Tide team found themselves surrounded by Storm Pack students. Water spiraled through the air like living serpents. Wind blades sliced through the trees. One Ocean wolf created a towering wall of water. The Storm wolves leaped over it effortlessly, carried by powerful gusts. Explosions echoed across the valley. The peaceful forest had become a battlefield. --- High above... Inside the Observation Hall... The professors watched dozens of crystal screens simultaneously. Professor Orion smiled. "The shrinking forest never fails." Master Kael nodded. "Students who hide behind strategy must now face reality." Professor Selene adjusted one floating crystal. "Not necessarily." She enlarged Astera's screen. Instead of rushing toward the center... Astera had climbed into the enormous trees above the battlefield. She moved silently across thick branches, using height instead of speed. Dean Aurelius smiled faintly. "Interesting." "While everyone watches the ground..." "Miss Arina Tidewell watches the entire forest." --- Astera paused atop an enormous branch nearly thirty meters above the ground. From there... She could see almost everything. Groups moving. Battles beginning. Escape routes. Danger zones. She quietly raised her mana compass. The enchanted needle spun wildly before settling toward the northeast. "The safest route..." She smiled. "...is the one no one noticed." The tiny dragon suddenly pointed downward. Three second-year students had cornered two frightened first-years beneath the trees. "Hand over your tokens!" "You can't win anyway!" The younger students backed away nervously. Astera sighed. "So much for a peaceful morning." She removed one of her magnetic collectors from her belt. With a soft click... The tiny device activated. A nearly invisible enchanted wire shot downward. Neither group noticed. Within seconds... One glowing Moon Token detached from a second-year's belt and flew silently upward into the branches. The device returned to Astera's hand. She smiled. "One." Below... The senior froze. "My token..." He looked around wildly. "What happened?" His teammates stared in confusion. "It just disappeared!" The first-years used the distraction to escape into the forest. The seniors argued among themselves, never realizing the mysterious thief was quietly watching from above. Astera tucked the extra token safely into her pouch. "No fight." "No injuries." "Efficient." The tiny dragon proudly wagged its tail. Astera gently scratched beneath its chin. "I think you're enjoying this a little too much." The little creature chirped innocently. Far in the distance... A pair of crimson eyes watched Astera disappear among the branches. Draven Ashfire. He had witnessed everything. And for the first time since the trial began... He wasn't simply curious about Arina Tidewell. He was beginning to suspect that the quiet first-year was hiding far more than anyone at the academy realized. Draven remained hidden behind the thick trunk of an ancient moon oak, his crimson eyes following the lone figure moving effortlessly through the treetops. He had watched countless students during the trial. Some relied on overwhelming elemental power. Some depended on brute strength. Others simply hid until an opportunity appeared. But Arina Tidewell was different. She wasn't running from battles. She was choosing which battles deserved her attention. Flint Earthclaw landed beside him, returning to his human form after finishing another fight. "You've been staring in the same direction for quite a while." Draven didn't look away. "Do you know that first-year?" Flint followed his gaze. "The Ocean Pack girl?" "Arina Tidewell." Draven nodded. "She never wastes energy." "She never fights unless she has already planned the outcome." Flint smiled. "You admire her." "I respect intelligence." Flint chuckled. "That's your way of admitting you're curious." Draven finally turned toward him. "Doesn't it bother you?" "What?" "She defeated a senior." "She keeps collecting tokens." "Yet no one has seen her transform." Flint became thoughtful. "I've noticed." "Perhaps she's hiding her wolf." "Or perhaps..." "...she has another reason." Draven's wolf stirred uneasily inside him. "I don't know why..." "But every time I see her..." "I feel like I've met her before." Flint frowned. "Have you?" Draven slowly shook his head. "I don't think so." "But something about her feels... familiar." Neither of them realized that the witch's enchanted necklace concealed not only Astera's wolf but also the bond that should have been impossible to hide. Far ahead... Astera continued moving through the branches. The shrinking forest forced more and more students toward the center. Within minutes, she encountered another battlefield. Two second-year students had cornered a frightened first-year against a cliff. "There is nowhere left to run." "Give us your token." The younger student trembled. "I only have one..." "Please..." Astera sighed quietly. "I really need to stop getting involved." The tiny dragon looked at her expectantly. "I know..." "You already know what I'm going to do." She reached into her pouch and removed three tiny crystal discs. One after another, she tossed them into different trees. The devices activated silently. Moments later... The surrounding forest echoed with terrifying howls. One howl. Then another. Then dozens. The sound perfectly resembled a pack of magical beasts approaching at full speed. The two seniors froze. "Did you hear that?" "It sounds close." Branches shook violently as Astera remotely activated another invention. Leaves exploded into the air. The frightened seniors immediately panicked. "Run!" They disappeared into the forest without looking back. The first-year blinked in confusion. "They..." "They just left?" Astera dropped lightly from the tree. "It seems your luck improved." The student stared. "A-Arina!" "You saved me." Astera smiled gently. "Don't thank me." "Just survive." Before the student could ask another question, she fired her grappling cable toward another tree and disappeared once again into the forest canopy. Inside the Observation Hall... Several professors laughed. Professor Orion folded his arms. "She defeated two opponents..." "...without throwing a single punch." Master Kael smiled. "She understands something many warriors never learn." "Fear is sometimes stronger than strength." Professor Selene enlarged another crystal screen. "She's becoming one of the most discussed participants." Dean Aurelius nodded thoughtfully. "And yet..." "She still refuses unnecessary violence." The shrinking barrier continued advancing. The magical red wall could now be seen between the trees. Everything it touched disappeared beneath glowing silver mist before reappearing outside the academy grounds. Students caught inside were instantly eliminated. Panic spread. The remaining participants sprinted toward the final sanctuary. Dozens collided at narrow crossings. Elemental powers erupted everywhere. Fire collided with water. Stone crashed against storms. Entire sections of forest trembled beneath the battles. Not far away... Nerina Tidecrest watched another student being eliminated. She calmly crossed another name off the list inside her notebook. "Only the strongest remain." One teammate approached. "Lady Nerina..." "There's someone climbing the rankings quickly." "Who?" The student pointed toward the floating leaderboard. Nerina's blue eyes narrowed. Arina Tidewell "Again..." Another teammate nodded. "They say she defeated a senior." "And she's collected more tokens without joining any alliance." Nerina smiled faintly. "So..." "Another Ocean Pack student wishes to prove herself." She looked toward the center of the forest. "I hope we meet." "I'd like to see whether the rumors are true." Meanwhile... Zephyr Stormwind sat comfortably atop a giant branch eating fruit he had stolen from another student. The tiny breeze around him carried voices from every direction. "Oh?" He grinned. "So everyone is chasing the mysterious Arina now?" His wolf laughed inside him. "This tournament keeps getting better." Without warning, another student rushed beneath his tree. Zephyr casually flicked his fingers. A playful gust of wind lifted the student's backpack into the branches. The young man looked upward in disbelief. "My bag!" Zephyr smiled innocently. "You dropped something." Astera finally reached the edge of the final safe zone. Hundreds of students had gathered. The peaceful isolation she had relied upon throughout the trial had vanished. From this point onward... Every movement would be seen. Every mistake noticed. She quietly adjusted the enchanted necklace around her neck. "No mistakes." The tiny dragon climbed inside her hood, hiding itself from curious eyes. Suddenly... A strange pressure spread across the clearing. The ground trembled. Every student instinctively looked around. The professors inside the Observation Hall immediately stood. Professor Orion's smile disappeared. "The mana..." "It's rising." Deep beneath the ancient roots... Something stirred. An overwhelming wave of ancient energy swept across the Moon Forest. Even Draven's powerful wolf became restless. Flint frowned. "What is happening?" Dean Aurelius stared at the largest crystal screen. His usually calm expression changed for the first time. "...Impossible." The earth cracked. Ancient silver light burst from beneath the ground. A colossal silhouette slowly rose from the heart of the forest. Students stood frozen. No one moved. No one spoke. The trial had taken an unexpected turn. And every participant suddenly realized... The greatest challenge of the Moon Forest Trial had not been each other. It had been waiting beneath the forest all along.
