Chapter 4: Wolfsbane incident. Luna's POV “You saw it too, right?” He asked me and I nodded. “Wait here,” he said and started moving in the direction of the trees that were formerly behind me. “Hold on,” I said as I grabbed his arm. “Do you think that is a good idea?” I had a very good idea of what was behind those trees and I didn't want him to risk finding out. “Of course,” he said, pulling his hand away. “Someone is out there spying on us and you don't think it is a good idea to check it out?” “What if it is a werewolf?” I called out after him as he continued walking. He stopped immediately when I said that and he turned around. “Do you really think so?” He asked. “It is a possibility,” I said and began walking towards him. “So what am I supposed to do? Let the person go? What if that person holds the answers to these crazy murders?” “Fine. You can go but I'm coming with you,” I declared. “No, you're not. Stay here with the body.” “Definitely not,” I said and started walking. He groaned and I looked back to see him following me. He now had his gun in his hand and it was aimed forward. Everywhere was totally silent aside from the occasional rustling of leaves as we made our way through the woods. Something moved again behind the trees and I knew without doubt that someone was there. I suddenly broke into a run and I could hear the detective yelling my name as I went. Since I was way faster than him, I got to the cluster of trees before him but there was nobody there. His breathing was a little bit laboured when he finally got to the trees and he looked displeased with me. “What the hell did you do that for? Do you know how dangerous it is out here? I will—” I placed my hand over his mouth and the rest of his words became mumbled. “Shh. Do you smell that?” I asked. “Smell what?” He asked in irritation after I pulled my hand away from his mouth. “That.” I made a small, repeated circle in the air. “I can't smell anything. What is it?” “I can't really place it but it seems very familiar. Hold on.” I sniffed the air and took a few steps forward. The more I moved, the more the smell got stronger and as I was about to turn around a tree, the world suddenly started swirling and then everything went black. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in what seemed like a bedroom. I jerked up and a throbbing in my head sent me crashing back onto the bed. “Relax. You're in my house,” a voice said beside me. I turned to see the detective sitting there and looking at me with watchful eyes. “What happened?” I asked. “You passed out,” he replied. He produced a small plastic that looked like a vial and held it up for me to see. “This is why you passed out.” I recognized it immediately. “Wolfsbane. I should have known.” “Yeah, I should have known too.” He stood up from the chair he was sitting on and approached the bed. “The signs were all there and yet, I decided to ignore it.” “What are you talking about?” I asked. “Do you want to explain to me why you passed out from wolfsbane? Because the last time I checked, wolfsbane affected only wolves. So…….” I knew he was onto me and I had to come up with something quickly or my secret would be out in the open. “I am allergic to wolfsbane,” I said quickly. He looked at me as if I had just said something stupid. “Allergic to wolfsbane, uh? Try again.” “I am serious,” I insisted. “Remember those werewolves I told I encountered as a teenager? Well, one of them dropped a portion of wolfsbane and I stumbled across it. I didn't know what it was and my curiosity took the best of me and I ended up inhaling it while trying to smell it. My body reacted to it and I had to be taken to the hospital where I spent a whole day before they could get it out of my system. You're wrong about wolfsbane not affecting humans. According to my research, it could be mixed with different chemicals that humans react to thereby making it lethal.” He didn't look convinced but I could see that he was giving it deep thought. “I don't believe you, but I do hope you're telling the truth. For your sake and mine. How do you feel now?” I rose from the bed, slowly this time around and put my legs on the floor. “I feel better. That stuff knocked me out cold. How were you able to collect it?” “I found it in this same vial lying around where you passed out. Whoever had dropped it there must have been the person watching us and as much as I tried, I couldn't find any trace whatsoever. It seemed like the person disappeared into thin air.” “Wait, what of the body?” I asked as I rose to my feet. “I have delivered it to the coroner.” “Alright. Can you take me home?” I wobbled a bit but I managed to steady myself against the wall. “Are you sure you can make it home right now? You can stay here for as long as necessary. I could whip up something for us.” I gave him a look of mock suspicion. “Is that your way of saying you want me to have breakfast with you, detective?” He shrugged and smiled. “Maybe. And, call me Alex. Detective sounds a little too formal.” “Alright. And call me Luna too. Addressing me by my last name brings back memories of high school that I don't want to remember.” “Okay. Come with me,” he said and headed out of the bedroom.
