chapter 1: The Perfect Facade
I forced another smile as the crystal chandeliers glittered above the crowded ballroom of the Valenti Estate. My engagement party was in full swing, the air heavy with the scent of expensive perfume, cigar smoke, and the quiet murmur of power deals disguised as harmless conversation. “Congratulations, Lena,” said Mr. Rossi, one of my father’s oldest allies, gripping my hand with slightly more force than necessary. “Nikolai is a fine match and this alliance will be good for all of us.” “Thank you,” I replied, keeping my voice warm and steady. “I’m truly blessed.” Beside me, Nikolai slipped an arm around my waist, his touch light and calculated, a perfect display of affection for the watching crowd. “We both are,” he said smoothly, flashing that charming smile that always made the older women sigh. His fingers pressed just enough to remind me of my role. I leaned into him, playing the perfect fiancée, even as something in his eyes felt a fraction too distant tonight. I had spent weeks preparing for this. Secretly studying the business contracts, the family ledgers, and the political ties that would strengthen the Valentis. No one knew how many nights I had stayed up learning negotiation tactics and market trends. I was the good daughter, the one who never caused trouble, and the one who would secure our family’s future with this marriage. A waiter passed with flutes of champagne. I took one but barely sipped. From across the room, Liora glided toward us, her dark hair pinned in elegant waves, her smile bright enough to command attention. My younger sister looked radiant in a crimson dress that hugged her figure. “Sister!” she exclaimed, pulling me into a hug that felt slightly too tight.“You look absolutely stunning. Nikolai is such a lucky man. I’ve always said you deserve the very best.” Her words dripped sweetness, but I caught the familiar barb underneath. The way her eyes flicked over my simple sapphire engagement ring. “Thank you, Liora,” I said, squeezing her back. “I couldn’t have done any of this without our family.” “Our parents stood nearby, Mother adjusting Father’s tie as she spoke with the council members. Not once had they asked how I felt about the match. They cared only that the image was flawless and the alliance remained secure. Duty always came before everything else.” Nikolai excused himself to speak with some associates, his hand lingering a second too long before slipping away. I watched him go, that small pride settling in my chest because this was right, and this was what I had been raised for. Then I felt it. A gaze, heavy and intense, cut through the crowd like a blade. I turned slowly toward the shadowed edge of the ballroom, where the tall windows framed the darkness outside. A man stood there, tall and commanding, even beneath the dim glow of the lights. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit, his features partially hidden by the shadows that fell across his face. For one brief moment, our eyes met. Something electric passed between us,his stare dark, unwavering, and far too intense to ignore. There was something unsettling about the way he looked at me, as though the entire room had disappeared and I was the only person he saw. My pulse quickened. He inclined his head slightly, a subtle acknowledgment meant only for me, before remaining perfectly still among the crowd.” I blinked, dismissing the strange flutter in my stomach. Just another powerful guest, another stranger drawn to the spectacle of the Valenti engagement. I looked away, steadying my breathing, because tonight was not about fleeting moments. Liora appeared at my side again, looping her arm through mine. “Come on, Lena. Let’s have a real toast. Sister to sister, you’ve worked so hard for this,so you deserve something special.” Her smile was warm, inviting. For a second, the unease I always felt around her softened. Maybe tonight we could actually connect, family was everything, after all. She guided me toward a quieter corner table where two glasses waited, filled with a deep red liquid that caught the light. “To your future,” she said, lifting hers. “To the life you’ve always been meant for.” I clinked my glass against hers, the crystal ringing clear. “To family.” The drink was sweeter than I expected, with a faint herbal note beneath the richness of its flavor. I took a longer sip, letting the warmth settle through me while the noise of the party continued around us. Liora watched me closely, her eyes gleaming with an emotion I couldn't quite read. For a moment, everything felt perfect. The weight of duty lifted just a little,I had done what was expected, Nikolai, the alliance and the future. Then the room tilted. “My vision blurred at the edges as the room tilted beneath my feet. The glass slipped from my trembling fingers, shattering across the marble floor. Heat spread through my body, and a thick fog slowly descended over my mind, swallowing my thoughts one by one.” “Liora?” I whispered, reaching for her arm. My limbs felt disconnected and heavy. She caught me gently, her smile never wavering. That smile, wide, satisfied, almost triumphant, burned into my fading consciousness as the world spun faster. The last thing I saw was my sister’s face, serene and victorious, as darkness swallowed everything.
