Thankfully, my reflexes kicked in, and with a quick move, I was able to catch the vase before it fell to the floor, alerting the two in the bedroom of my presence. I carefully placed it back while I could still hear their sounds of pleasure, then slipped out of the house without making a noise.
It was still raining outside, but I couldn't care less. I had my umbrella, but didn’t bother to open it. I let the rain soak my hair and coat as I strolled down the streets. The pain of betrayal cut deep. How could I have been so blind? How could Kevin have been such a good actor?
I recalled our numerous dates, the effort he put into winning me over, and the romantic nights we shared. I couldn't believe those thrilling moments were all a lie.
I spent so much time in the hospital, yet he seemed happy to have me home at the end of each day, and I never noticed a single sign that he had someone else.
Even though I tried my best not to cry, my eyes became watery, and I was grateful for the nearly empty streets, which meant no one could witness my pain. My tears mingled with the rain on my face, making it less likely anyone would notice I was actually crying.
I walked through the streets for quite a while, and it took me a long time to calm down. In the end, I felt emptier than ever. My life had turned upside down in just a matter of minutes, and I thought I was done.
I had to stay strong, but the worst part was that to go through with my plan, I had to pretend to be someone I wasn't. How could I touch Kevin again after discovering his true colours, knowing that he had probably cheated on me for a long time?
The ceremony was just three weeks away, and twenty-one days felt like a short time. During those three weeks, I had to plan every detail carefully to ensure everything turned out as I had envisioned. In twenty-one days, they would come to know me, just as the pack would come to know their Alpha. In twenty-one days, I would have my revenge, and that would help ease my troubled soul.
However, planning such a revenge wasn’t easy, and I knew I could end up in serious trouble if I didn’t escape in time. For Kevin and his father, I would be the only target to catch and make disappear, so I had to admit that I needed at least a little help.
Only one person came to mind, and I smiled through my tears as I recalled his intense, often humorous, yet always protective figure. I pulled my phone out of my pocket. After unlocking the screen, I was confronted with a picture of Kevin and Zoe together, but I quickly closed it and found my brother's number. I knew it was early morning in Europe, but this situation couldn’t wait.
“Erin? What’s wrong?” His sleepy voice made me feel guilty for waking him up, but I needed to talk to someone.
“I’m sorry to wake you up, Alex, but I need to ask you something.”
I guessed my tone revealed how broken I was, and I imagined the shocked expression on his sleepy face.
“Erin, what happened? Are you crying?”
I sighed.
“Yes, I am.”
“Erin, tell me what’s going on!” His sleepy tone vanished instantly.
“Kevin is cheating on me. When I got home today, I found him with my
Colleague, Zoe Morris. She’s his fated mate. I can’t do much about that, but the worst part is that I found out he only wanted to use me.”
There was a brief silence on the other end.
“What? But he’s been with you for years.”
“Exactly. I told you I’ve never revealed who I truly am to him, but he knew. Perhaps he knew from the beginning and made me believe he loved me. He would be a weak and useless Alpha, and that’s why he wanted me to be his Luna. Kevin wanted to use me to become a powerful leader with an extended territory while keeping his mistress on the side.”
I couldn’t say all of this without shedding another tear.
“What an asshole! Erin, pack your things and come home! You have no future in his pack!”
“No! I mean, I want to leave, but not yet.”
“What are you talking about? Don’t say you want to talk to him and give him another chance.”
“No! I don’t want that either. I want revenge.”
He sighed.
“Erin, I understand your feelings, but you’re all alone out there. You could get into serious trouble.”
“I know, which is why I’m asking you for help. The ceremony will take place exactly three weeks from now. I want to attend, and I want to ensure that the pack members will never accept Kevin as their Alpha.”
“How do you plan to do that?”
“I will reveal my identity there and the truth behind our relationship. I also recorded them having s*x in our house, in our bed. I want to play that video there.”
“Erin, I don’t think you can handle this alone.”
“I’ll be fine. This is something I must do. The only thing I ask is that you organise for a few people to pick me up from the ceremony, to help me escape in time.”
He sighed, and from the silence on the other end, I could tell he was thinking about coming over himself and picking me up against my will.
“Please, Alex. This would give me peace of mind. I can’t relax knowing they got away with it and will live happily.”
After a few seconds, I heard him sigh.
“Erin, you’re out of your mind.” He paused, but then continued. “But if this is what will make you feel better, I won’t hold you back. I’ll send a few people to be around for protection.”
“Thank you,” I said.
“Call me if you need me!”
“Okay, I will call you,” I promised. After another sigh, he hung up. I slipped my phone back into my pocket and kept walking. The weather was getting cold, but I felt unable to return to the house I once called home. My gaze wandered to a bar on the other side of the road, reminding me of how long it had been since I last tasted alcohol. I thought that this would ease my tortured nerves and keep me warm, so I quickly crossed the road and didn’t stop until I reached the entrance of the bar.
