Three years ago, Ava Bennett’s brother vanished without a trace. The police gave up, but Ava didn't. Her desperate search leads her to Cross Holdings—and directly into the path of its notoriously cold, devastatingly private CEO, Adrian Cross. Ava manipulates her way into a job as his personal assistant to uncover the truth, but Adrian is harboring dangerous secrets of his own. Fieriously protective, relentlessly secretive, and far too observant, he seems determined to keep her away from the answers she's spent three years searching for.

When a twisted game of corporate espionage catches up to them, Ava realizes the man she suspected may be the only one keeping her alive. But Adrian knows something about her brother that could shatter everything she believes—and the undeniable attraction growing between them. To survive, Ava must learn whom to trust. And Adrian must decide how much of the truth he is willing to sacrifice to protect her.

Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Lied
THE SECRET BEHIND HIS SILENCE. Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Lied Three years ago, Ava Bennett lost her brother. When the police closed the case for lack of evidence and everyone else eventually surrendered to the grief, Ava kept digging. Now, rain streamed down the taxi window as she stared up at the forty-two-story tower of glass and steel looming above the street. The silver letters of Cross Holdings gleamed against the gray morning, impossibly pristine against the gloom. Her fingers tightened around the folder resting on her lap, the sharp edges pressing into her palm. Inside was a résumé built from carefully selected truths and several expertly constructed lies: a fabricated employment history, a forged reference letter, and just enough legitimate qualifications to make the deception bulletproof. It had taken her six weeks to create the file, but it had taken her three agonizing years to reach this building. Ava slipped the folder beneath her arm and stepped out of the taxi. She paused on the sidewalk, staring up at the building as rain gathered on her lashes. Six weeks earlier, she had recovered a fragment of an encrypted file from Ethan's old laptop. Most of the data had been corrupted, but one detail had survived: a location embedded in the file's metadata linking directly to Cross Holdings. It was the first real lead she'd had in months, and she had no intention of waiting for the police to investigate it. She pushed through the revolving doors. Cold air-conditioning washed over her as she entered the lobby, a sprawling space that looked exactly like the kind of place where people came to make millions and bury secrets. Polished marble stretched beneath her feet, dark wood framed the reception desk, and employees in expensive suits moved through the security gates with practiced efficiency. Ava adjusted her blazer, approached the receptionist, and announced her interview for the executive office. "Forty-second floor. Mr. Cross's office," the receptionist said after a brief pause over her tablet. Ava thanked her and turned toward the elevators, keeping her expression composed even as her heartbeat began to accelerate. Not because she was nervous about the interview, but because Adrian Cross was waiting upstairs. She had spent six weeks researching the thirty-year-old CEO. He was wealthy enough to disappear from public life whenever he wanted and powerful enough that very few people questioned him when he did. His father, Richard Cross, had died three years ago—the exact same year Ethan vanished. Two disappearances. One company connecting them. As the elevator climbed, her phone vibrated. An unknown number had sent her a message: You shouldn't be there. Her stomach tightened. Before she could react, a second message appeared: Walk out before you reach the top. Ava looked around the empty elevator, her thumb hovering over the screen before typing a quick demand for identity. No response came. She slipped the phone back into her pocket. She had spent three years being afraid of what might have happened to Ethan; she wasn't going to walk away because of two anonymous texts. The elevator chimed at the forty-second floor, and the doors opened to reveal a man standing directly outside. Ava stopped dead. She had seen photographs of Adrian Cross before, but none of them had prepared her for the sheer physical reality of him. His thick, black hair fell naturally across his forehead, slightly unruly against the otherwise immaculate appearance of his dark suit. His angular jaw was clean-shaven, and his dark eyes locked onto hers with an intensity that made her suddenly conscious of every breath she took. He looked at the folder in her hand before meeting her eyes again. "Miss Bennett," he said. His voice was a low, resonant drawl that seemed to pull the oxygen straight out of the air. "Mr. Cross." For a moment, neither of them moved. Ava watched him carefully, her pulse jumping as something dangerous flickered across his expression the second she said her name. It disappeared behind a mask of total control so quickly she couldn't tell if she had imagined it. He stepped aside, noting she was three minutes early, and led her into an office that felt less like a workspace and more like a fortress. Adrian didn't offer a polite corporate greeting. He sat behind his dark marble desk, opened her résumé, and immediately began testing her. He noted her excellent references and her supposed organizational skills, his gaze cutting effortlessly through her prepared answers. When he asked why she chose Cross Holdings, Ava gave the standard response about respecting the company. Adrian shot it down instantly. "That's the answer people give when they want the job," he countered. Ava leaned back slightly, refusing to be intimidated. "Then perhaps you should ask a better question." Silence settled between them. Adrian studied her for several agonizing seconds before closing the folder. "You're hired. Monday morning. Eight o'clock." Ava stared at him, stunned by the abruptness, but he had already picked up another file, silently dismissing her. As she reached for the door, his voice stopped her one last time. "One piece of advice, Miss Bennett. If you intend to work here, learn the difference between curiosity and trespassing." Ava held his gaze, promised to remember it, and stepped into the hallway. Only when the heavy oak door clicked shut did she release the breath she'd been holding. She had done it. She was inside. Pulling out the old photograph of Ethan from her bag, she studied it for the thousandth time. But this time, zooming in on the slightly blurred background, her breath caught. Standing several feet behind her brother was a man in a dark suit with sharp, unforgiving features. Adrian Cross. Her phone vibrated again. You got the job. Now ask Adrian Cross what happened to your brother. The color drained from her face as she stared at the closed door of the executive office. Something was violently wrong. Inside that very office, Adrian stood beside his desk, holding a matching copy of the photograph. He turned it over, tracing the faded handwriting on the back: If Ava ever comes looking for me, don't let her find out what happened. When his phone rang with Victor Hale's name, Adrian answered with a tight jaw. "She found her way inside, didn't she?" Victor asked, his voice calm and almost amused. "Does she know?" "No," Adrian replied, his grip tightening on the phone. "Good," Victor said softly. "Then let's make sure she never does." Adrian lowered the phone, staring blankly at the photograph. For three years, he had kept the truth buried. Now, the one person who could expose everything—the woman he had promised to protect—had walked directly into the blast zone.
