Selena drifted through trees like a wisp of smoke. Her greyish, silky, and smooth fur was shining bright under the moonlit forest. As she glided through the forest, her paws made a low thumping sound on the damp earth. Her breath was filled with the pine resins and dew. A helpless, timid prey whose heartbeat was scattered in the air was nearby, and in any second, Selena would pounce over him, tearing him apart, but Selena was sly. She was heading towards her target carefully. Her ears were twitching in the presence of the prey life around her.

Here was a deer, all alone in the middle of this dusky forest, and it did not know that it was the prey of the most devious hunter of all time, Selena, whose speed, vigilance, and disguise were famous in the clan.

She crouched a little low, her muscles all tense with anticipation.

Chapter 1 : Moonlit Hunt
It was a full moon over the horizon—an argent eye suspended all over the dense forest of Silverpine, watching every breath, every shadow lurking. The mist coiled low between the pine trees and wrapped the world into its ghastly veils. Every whisper, every murmur, and every rustling was clear under the silver glow of the moon. Faraway from here, an owl was howling on a haunting note that trembled through the mist. Before she could move, she heard a familiar sound brushing through her thoughts. This grave voice was whispering in her ears, and all her senses were heightened. “Selena, left flank, move quietly; I smell a deer.” It was Darian. His male beauty was amplified by his wolfy visage. His strong body was flexing while he moved along Selena. Even in this rigged form, his voice was strong enough to send a shiver down her spine. It was not the fear she felt at that moment; it was the recognition. The connection humming between them was rather complicated. It was too intense to be merely called friendship and too fragile to be named out loud. Selena’s tail flicked in acknowledgement, and she slipped left through the dense foliage. The mist before her parted like her hot breath. Every sense sharpened: the thump of the deer’s heart, the faint tremor of its hooves pressing into soft soil, the rush of blood beneath its skin. And beneath all this, there was another heart beating. It was of Darian. He was quite larger than Selena in wolf form. His coat was darker, and his eyes burned with golden flame. He moved with a graceful gait as if he were the dominant one. He moved with a grace that made everyone follow him without question. Even the bold and bodacious Selena was following him. But around Selena, he was never commanding; he was inviting. She could sense the deer now. Moving in the shadow, parallel to her, it was the unfortunate prey of Selena. The deer stepped into the clearing filled with the pale light of the moon. Its head was lifted in an upward direction, its nostrils were flaring, and its muscles were tense with the instinctive fear. The world came to a halt and appeared to stop breathing. Darian and Selena did not need words to get each other. They were moving together as one soul since the early days of the pack. They never thought that it was too dangerous to feel too much for each other. One thought, one heartbeat, and they were found with each other all the time. Selena cut through the mist like a blade. She was fast and fierce. She lunged first and almost got the prey in a gist. She was just inches away from the deer, and her jaws were snapped shut. Before she could get the deer, Darain was already there. A dark streak burst through the forest, and his deep, resonant, and primal growl rolled through the forest. The prey stumbled at this attack. Selena's muscles were coiling and releasing. A thrill of chasing prey was surging through her veins. Darian embraced her, and soon their forms were intertwining with each other in perfect rhythm. There was a storm of emotions like grace, ferocity, instinct, and trust. Suddenly the deer broke left. It was desperate and wanted to forestall the turmoil that would consume it. Selena matched its speed. Her breath was hot against the cold mist of the forest. For a moment she was lost in the exhilaration of it, not thinking, not giving it a thought, just tiring one’s muscles without any doubt, but then she heard Darian’s whisper in her ears. “Don’t you dare overtake it just yet. Let it tire itself out.” And she adjusted her speed but did not stop chasing it. She saw Darian with an eye of pride. She knew he was always a strategist, always calculating. Selena huffed a laugh in Darian’s direction. It was the Lupine equivalent of a smirk. She ventured forward anyway. This time she was all set to knock the deer down on its feet. She heard Darian growling as if warning her. “Careful, Luna, don’t tire yourself before the hunt is over. You will regret the chances you missed.” She turned her head towards him, and their eyes met. Golden flames intertwined with the silver one. A spark passed between them. No words were uttered, but they just knew the meaning of it. Selen jumped over a log and cleared the path for Darian. Darian smiled and said, “Show-off” He was really amused and told Selena to keep this audacity up. For a moment, they were not the packmates or predators; they were the rivals. They were two forces testing each other’s limits. Selena was closing the distance between her and the deer. Darian’s chuckle echoed in her mind. They finally cornered the deer, who was awestruck, frozen, and scared. His eyes were wide and his chest heavy as he anticipated himself between two scowling wolves. Suddenly the instincts of Selena shifted. She slowed down. She wasn't rushing the final moment. This was the instinct in her that Darian respected the most. She approached with soft steps towards the prey as if it was not a battle; it was a ritual for them. Her eyes met Darian's. There was a silent pact of friendship, leadership, and shared goals. He let her take the charge. Selena moved forward towards her prey, and she lunged. The forest fell silent, and there were two predators satisfying their hunger. Steam rose from the earth. The mist wrapped them both as they stood over the fallen creature, breaths syncing. Darian stepped closer, his golden eyes softening. He murmured in her ears, “We make a good team, always side by side, never apart.” His growl made Selena swell with pride, and she said, “Yes, we always have.” She agreed, but something squeezed in her chest. He sensed her fear. He drew himself closer to her and brushed his muzzle against her body as if he wanted to know what she was hiding. He was gently caressing her body. It was an act of love, and the earth suddenly began to revolve around these two bodies. They were grateful to eternity for providing them with two hearts that beat in synchrony, as if time had stopped.
