Chapter One
The Call
Anna’s POV.
“Ma'am your good uncle has passed on, we are sorry for your loss.”
These words marked the beginning of my new life one of money and power love and betrayal. my great uncle a man I had never met before he left me his entire fortune as well as his ranch.
That day started off like any other I was up at dawn and out the door to go hang out with my friends, down an old back road. We were all just relaxing, having fun when I got the call. I did not have much contact with my family, so it came as a surprise that I had been notified about his death not to mention being asked to come into the city for his last will and testament. So, join me on a journey that will both make me and break me and by the end, maybe, just maybe you will have found peace in a world of pain.
Hi, my name is Annabelle. I grew up in a small town in Missouri. My parents split up when I was young, my sister would later her follow my mother to the city, while my brother and I would stay in my father's house. The only friends I had are two guys that were like brothers and my horse, they stood by me though thick and thin and never let me cry alone. In a way I almost owe them my life.
Chris’s POV.
The old man is dead, that is all we could think about. What is going to happen now, none of his children wants the ranch, just his money. Now the lawyers want me to come into the city for the will and to meet the new owner. Its probably some greenhorn city slicker who does not know a damned thing about ranching or horses.
Oh. I am sorry where are my manners. My name is Christopher, Chris to my friends and the foreman of Coyote Ranch, right hand man to Big Joe. Well, I was his right-hand man now I must be the babysitter to this new boss.
Well, I guess I better pack up for the weekend. Since I have to go into the city meet up with the lawyers. Till then have a good day y’all.
Anna’s POV.
So, let us start from the beginning shall we. I was sitting there with the guys hanging out the end of an old road next to the water, like we do all the time. Mace had a beer and was bring me one. The rest of his friends were either fishing a little way up stream or running about like a group of young colts after the first sign of spring. I was sitting on the tailgate of Ric’s old ford truck with my lab top typing away at a new chapter for a book I was working on admiring from a distance the fun that friends could have together.
“Here Princess, you look like you could use this.” Mace said as he handed me a cold beer and took a swig of his own.
“Ya, thanks Mace.” I replied as I opened the bottle and took a sip.
“So, you want to talk about what’s going on in that head of yours? You’ve had that look in your eye all day and don’t act like you haven’t we’ve already seen it.” Ric said as he walked up to us.
“Guys I’m fine, and shouldn’t you be with your friends having fun?” I tried to change the subject.
“Girl you are our friend just as much as the rest, in some cases more than them. So, tell us what’s bothering you or you leave us no choice but to tickle you into submission.” They replied with a smirk and an evil glint in their eyes.
As the guys stalked closer to me with their arms out wiggling fingers in the air. I let out a gasp in mock fear, as I started to get up so that I could run. However, as usual I no more than moved away from the tailgate when they were on me. I ended up on the ground with tears in my eyes, screaming for mercy from their attack. When they Finally let up and I could once again breathe, we set there on the ground and laughed, my sadden state all but forgotten.
“So, you good now?” Mace asked as they helped me up to my feet.
“Ya, I good now. Thanks guys.” I told them as I dusted my self off and fixed my clothes and hair. “Jackasses”
“We heard that” Mace and Ric said in unison.
“You were meant to.” I smarted off as I stuck my tongue out at them, of which they replied with their own tongues hanging out of the mouths.
That was when I got a call from the city telling me that my uncle had passed away. Honestly, I was surprised, I have little to no contact with anyone in my family. I was even more surprised when they asked me to come to the city during the weekend. Something about a will and testament, curiously I agreed, looking back I am glad I did.
So, here I am driving up to the city to meet with the lawyers and figure out what all is going on. Namely why in the world am I the one getting the call to come up. I mean doesn’t this guy have kids or a wife or something. Shouldn’t there be a long list of people to call and discuss this with. Why call me what do I have to do with this or with him.
So, I told the others I had to deal with a few things and that I would call and talk to them later.
Chris’s POV.
I left the ranch a few hours ago and am almost to the lawyer’s office. I just hope this new owner is not a complete i***t.
I Have been to the lawyer’s office a number of times with Big Joe for business. Weather it be for the ranch, one of the companies or personal. In fact, his lawyers were friends with him when they were all in college. But as he went back to the ranch after graduating. They went on to start a firm together. And Joe then did all his legal transactions though them.
Welp time to face the wolves. Let’s just hope the ranch stays on top.
