Chapter 1
Gianna
Hold her down, or I swear to God I’ll scatter the old man's brains across this stupid floral wallpaper."
The voice was a harsh, gravelly rasp that sliced straight through the heavy fog of my sleep.
Before I could even draw a breath to scream, a massive, calloused hand clamped violently over my mouth, suffocating the sound in my throat.
The heavy stench of gun oil flooded my senses. Rough hands yanked me awake from my bed, tearing me from the only safe place I had left in the world.
Men in black tactical gear and dark ski masks hauled me up by my arms, lifting me as if I weighed nothing at all.
I thrashed with everything I had. My legs kicked out in a wild, frantic arc beneath the duvet, my heels slamming uselessly against the mattress, but I was completely powerless against their brute strength.
"Get your hands off me!" I muffled a desperate shriek against the suffocating palm pressing into my lips, my fingers clawing fiercely at the thick tactical sleeve of the man holding me. "Let me go! What are you doing?!"
"Save your breath for the ride, b***h" another voice grunted from the foot of the bed, dripping with a cold, mocking amusement.
"The more you kick, the more it’s going to hurt your old man." My heart slammed against my ribs like a trapped bird.
My vision blurred with hot, blinding tears as I managed to twist my head toward the bedroom doorway.
My father, Santo, was crumpled against the doorframe like a broken doll. His face was a horrifying mosaic of purple bruises, swollen flesh, and split lips leaking fresh, bright crimson down his chin.
His expensive silk bathrobe was torn open, stained with his own blood and spilled whiskey.
He was weeping openly, his shoulders shaking in pathetic, ragged spasms as two more armed thugs held him upright by his arms. "Papa!" I screamed, my voice cracking raw against the palm suffocating my face.
I bucked and twisted violently, desperate to break free and run to him. "Papa, look at me! What did they do to you?" My father raised his bloodshot, swollen eyes, looking at me with a look of absolute, soul-crushing despair.
"Gianna... Dio mio, I am so sorry," he sobbed, his voice breaking into a ragged, pathetic whimper. "I lost everything at the card table... everything. I didn't mean to, piccola. I had no choice. I'm so sorry... I lost you."
"What are you talking about?" I choked out, fresh tears streaming down my cheeks, hot and stinging.
"Papa, tell me you didn't! Tell me this is a nightmare!" "Shut your damn mouth, old man," one of the masked giants snarled, his patience snapping.
Without a shred of hesitation, he shoved my father backward. Santo stumbled hard, crashing violently into the wooden bedside nightstand.
A porcelain lamp shattered into a hundred jagged pieces across the floor, the sharp, deafening clatter piercing the night air.
"Don't touch him!" I screamed, straining so hard against my captors that the muscles in my neck burned. I glared at the masked man holding me, venom dripping from my words.
"You cowards! If you want money, take the house! Take the car! Take every single cent we have left, just leave him alone!" The man holding me let out a harsh, barking laugh, his breath hot and foul against my ear.
"Money?" he sneered, tightening his iron grip around my waist until my ribs ached. "Sweetheart, your old man ran out of chips hours ago. He didn't have cash left to cover the pot. Tonight, the house collects its debts in flesh."
They didn't care about my crying. They didn't care about my trembling limbs, my hitching breaths, or my frantic, clawing fingers leaving red streaks down their forearms.
They didn't even look back at my father as they hauled me out of my bedroom, dragging me down the dimly lit hallway of the home I had grown up in.
My bare feet scraped against the cold hardwood, snagging on the edges of the Persian rugs.
"Let me go!" I sobbed, digging my toes into the floorboards, trying to anchor myself to anything, to any memory of safety. "Please! I'll do anything! Please don't take me!"
"Keep moving," the thug snarled, lifting me entirely off my feet so my heels dangled uselessly in the air.
They dragged me straight through the front door, plunging us into the freezing, damp midnight air of Naples.
The city outside was dead silent, wrapped in an eerie, suffocating shroud of fog.
A heavy, black SUV sat idling at the curb, its high-powered engine humming a low, menacing drone, its tinted windows swallowing the amber glow of the streetlights like an open grave.
The rear door swung open with a sharp click. "Get in," the man ordered, shoving me forward with zero gentleness.
I tumbled headfirst into the back seat, sprawling ungracefully across the sticky leather upholstery.
The moment my knees hit the floor, I scrambled up on hands and knees, lunging desperately for the opposite door.
My fingers clawed frantically at the metal handle, throwing all my weight against it. Click. The lock slammed home with a brutal, final mechanical thud just as my fingernails slipped off the lever.
I turned around, panting heavily, my chest heaving as I hammered my fists against the tinted glass. "Let me out! Let me out of here!"
Up front, the thug in the passenger seat didn't even bother turning around.
He simply raised a gloved hand and flicked two fingers at the driver. "Drive," he barked in sharp, effortless Italian, his tone completely dead, stripped of any remnant of human pity.
The tires shrieked against the asphalt, kicking up a violent spray of gravel as the heavy SUV rocketed away from the curb.
The vehicle tore into the labyrinth of dark, winding streets of Naples, cornering with a reckless speed that threw my body against the leather door.
I pressed my forehead against the cold, damp glass, watching my neighborhood blur past and vanish into the blackness of the night. Every twist and turn of the steering wheel felt like a nail being driven into my coffin.
I was entirely alone. My father was broken and bleeding back in that ruined house, and I was being hauled away into the dead of night by faceless monsters.
I was terrified, and I had no idea what was waiting for me. "Where are you taking me?"
