Chapter 11: Assumptions

1298 Words
Caelia momentarily remembered the footsteps she heard earlier. 'Was it her?' she turned to look at the door. But instead of rushing downstairs while still looking like a mess, she decided to fix herself first before facing her. An hour later, she came out of her room with a new set of clothes and the usual make-up she always wore. It was light, but her beauty still glowed like the moon. She looked like she was ready to go out. However, she had a matter to take care first. It was a matter she can't delay any longer. Caelia was never the jealous type. And she never once took interest in the position of a pack's Luna. So it wasn't really necessary to know the existence of the woman. Not especially when even her mated Alpha couldn't care less to even tell her. But knowing who the woman was still gave her a sense of relief. Not the relief that Darius would never replace her, but the relief that she did not need to walk on eggshells around them anymore. If Darius had finally found a new Luna, Caelia, who has become too broken to fix, can finally leave his life. But she was bound to the contract. The contract that never once worked on her favor. A contract that only led her to the edge. Even if she is treated like a ghost, like a nobody who only come and go—she has the right to learn who the woman was. The contract, as much as she hate to admit, is too strong for her to break. It was a part of their tradition, and she is not just bound to their tradition, but also to the very people who believed in this. The only way for Caelia to escape this shackles without placing her family's life and status to risk is by breaking the contract with Darius's permission. However, it may sound easy on the outside, but it is more complicated than what is seen on the surface. The leader of the pack is a very important figure. They may be the most dominant Alpha among the pack, but they cannot live and lead the crowd without a Luna. And Caelia, the only Luna at Darius's side, cannot leave until he find a new one. If the woman, as she had suspected, turned out to be his newly found partner, then it will bring her joy instead of pain. A long awaited wish. A dream that can free her from this painful world. As Caelia walked her way down the stairs, she again met the living room with only a couch standing alone without any other furniture. She followed the source of the sound and it led her to the kitchen. She was greeted by a view that she had seen two years ago. A kitchen with only one table and two chairs, a sink with an empty counter, and an even emptier multi-door fridge. It was the same as always, just like the first day she had entered the mansion, the day her nightmare began. The place looked the same, but with one unusual addition. A woman, about an inch taller than her, with bright brown hair and a slim body—stood in front of the fridge, rummaging inside as if searching for something. Caelia stared at the woman's back. Her movements were elegant, so graceful that Caelia would probably not regret giving her the position she always despised. However, her eyes, gazing at the woman's back, was jolted awake when she suddenly turned around to meet hers. Caelia couldn't utter a word. It was as if she had forgotten all the questions she had practiced. She simply stared at the woman in front of her, with bright brown eyes no different from her hair. She had a youthful glow despite having a child and her body did not seem to have undergone any changes. She couldn't guess how old she was, but if she were to guess, she would be around her age. The woman, who turned to look at Caelia, flinched from her unexpected appearance. It was as if she was caught doing something bad. Her face went through a variety of emotions. First, she looked embarrassed, and then her eyes widened as if she remembered something, then the next moment, her brows formed a frown. Caelia couldn't guess what she was feeling. In fact, she had no time to. She had to hurry at the company. Although the place is not very far from the mansion, it still took some time before one could reach the destination. She tried to appear friendly—not wanting to scare the lady whom she had no idea of. "Hi. Do you remember me?" Caelia, as usual, smiled. But the woman did not seem pleased from her presence. 'Was she embarrassed?' she ruled the possibility that the woman may be hungry but couldn't find a food anywhere, so getting caught felt wrong. Since the woman did not answer, Caelia continued as if confident she can make her speak in a minute. "I was the woman from yesterday, at the door step. I'm sorry if I sounded rude for asking who you were indirectly. I really regretted it a lot." she smiled, but the woman showed no reaction. Caelia was confused. She wasn't sure if the woman understood her or not. But surely, she did. Caelia even heard her speak yesterday. It's either the woman is too shy to greet her back, or that she doesn't remember Caelia. Although it was impossible, she couldn't help but think that way. Why else would the woman ignore her in the first place? Unless... Caelia stood frozen in place. 'Was my assumption correct?', she thought. The woman did not look too timid to greet her back, nor did she look like she couldn't remember Caelia since she is showing reaction. Now, there is only one possibility left. Jealousy. She blinked her eyes, and the corner of her lips curved into a smile. Her assumptions was merely a guess, but to think that she may have hit a nail gave her a sense of fulfillment. With a tender look, she began to speak again. "Actually, the kitchen here has always been empty. As similar to the living room and the yard. There's nothing much here to see and we never really filled them with anything. So if you don't mind, would you like me to bring food here so we can have a breakfast together?" She stopped beating around the bush and asked her for a meal. Now she has set the setting to start the conversation that will then lead to her question. She will make it as natural as possible. As if it just came by, as if it was unplanned. If she have time left to spare, she can then move the conversation to the contract. That will surely speed up the process. If the two of them had mutual feelings, then it will make things easier for her. Without needing to lift a finger, the shackles that bound her for 2 years will finally move to someone else's hand. However, instead of an answer she had repeated a lot of times in her head, the woman, whose brows continued to frown, switched her expression and started to sob. "M-Must you talk so harshly? I apologize if I had offended you in any way. I was simply looking for a food to feed my child's stomach. But if even my presence is uncomfortable for you, t—then I will stay out of your way." then she covered her face. Caelia, who was bewildered from the scene before her eyes, had her mouth wide open. "What???"
