Chapter 1: The New Bodyguard
He was hired to protect me. He was ordered to betray me.
My name is Maya Kingsley, and until this morning, I had the perfect Lagos life.
I woke up in silk sheets in a mansion on Banana Island. My closet was full of designer clothes I never had to ask twice for. My father, Victor Kingsley, was my hero. The billionaire everyone respected. The man who told me every night that he built his empire from nothing, with clean hands and hard work, so I would never have to suffer.
I believed him. I worshipped him.
Until this morning.
It started because I needed my passport. I have a charity gala in London next week and my assistant said it was in my father's private study safe. I wasn't supposed to go in there alone, but my father was in a meeting and I thought it would be quick.
His study always smelled like expensive cigars and old money. The safe was behind the painting of my late mother. I opened it, took my passport, and that's when I noticed the wood at the back of the safe was loose.
I shouldn't have touched it. But I am my father's daughter - curious and stubborn.
I pushed it, and a false drawer popped open.
Inside, there was no jewelry. No cash.
There were files. Dozens of them. Photos of men with guns. Photos of warehouses. Bank transfers with millions of dollars and notes written in red ink. And in the middle of it all, a single photo with my face on it.
It was my graduation photo. My smile was circled in thick red marker. Underneath, in my father's handwriting, were four words: "Leverage if he doesn't comply."
My blood ran cold.
Leverage.
I am not his princess. I am his leverage. His bargaining chip.
My hands started shaking so hard the file slipped from my fingers and papers scattered all over his Persian rug.
"What are you doing in here, princess?"
I froze. That voice.
It wasn't my father's voice. It was deeper. Colder. A voice that sounded like it never wasted words.
I turned around slowly.
He was standing in the doorway of the study, filling the entire frame. 6'3 of pure muscle in a black tailored suit that couldn't hide his build. A scar cut through his left eyebrow. His eyes were dark grey, like a storm over the Atlantic. Eyes that had seen things no one should see.
Adrian Stone. The new bodyguard my father hired yesterday.
When my father introduced him, I thought he was too handsome to be just a bodyguard. Too young, too dangerous. My father said he was ex-military, the best in the business, hired to protect me because there had been threats. I had rolled my eyes. Another one of my father's overprotective rules.
Now he wasn't looking at me like a bodyguard. He was looking at me like I was a problem he had to solve.
"I... I was looking for my passport," I whispered, my voice breaking.
He didn't answer. He walked into the room, his steps silent despite his size, and locked the study door behind him. The click made my heart stop.
He bent down, picked up the scattered papers with calm, disciplined hands, and placed them back in the file. He saw the photo of me with the red circle. His jaw clenched.
"You shouldn't have found this," he said quietly.
"Who are you?" I asked, backing away until my back hit the bookshelf. "What is this? What does leverage mean?"
He looked at me then. Really looked at me. And for a second, that cold mask slipped and I saw something else. Pity.
"My name is Adrian. I'm your new shadow," he said, locking the false drawer and slamming the safe shut. "Your father told you I was hired to protect you from his enemies. That's half true."
"What is the other half?" My tears were starting now.
"The other half is that your father isn't the businessman you think he is, Maya. Victor Kingsley is the head of the most dangerous syndicate in Lagos. The guns, the money, the photos - that's his real empire. And I wasn't hired to just protect you."
He stepped closer. I could smell his cologne - something clean and expensive, mixed with danger.
"I was hired to watch you. To report every move you make, every person you talk to, every place you go. And if your father disobeys his partners... I was ordered to hand you over to them."
The world tilted. My perfect life didn't just collapse. It exploded into a million pieces at my feet.
My father - the man who sang me to sleep, who built me a library when I was ten - he had been using me as insurance. My whole gilded cage was built on blood money.
"You're lying," I choked out. "My father would never-"
"He would. And he did," Adrian cut me off, but not cruelly. "I know because I used to work for people like him. That's why he hired me."
He took the passport from my shaking hand. Our fingers brushed. His were warm and rough with calluses. Mine were ice cold.
"You have two choices now, princess. You can pretend you never saw this, walk out of this study, and go back to your designer clothes and first-class flights. Or you can let me tell you the truth about who your father really is."
I looked up at him through my tears. He was hired to betray me. He was supposed to be my enemy.
So why was he the only one telling me the truth?
I wiped my face and made a decision that would change my life forever. I was done being a sheltered heiress in a gilded cage.
"Tell me the truth," I whispered.
His eyes darkened, and he reached out as if to wipe my tears, then stopped himself, remembering his place.
"Then you better get used to me, Maya," he said in a low voice. "Because from now on, I don't leave your side. Not ever."
And in that moment, I didn't know if I had just met my protector or my destroyer.
