A Marriage Built on Revenge

Amara Vale has spent years searching for the truth behind her father's disappearance and the financial scandal that destroyed her family.

Now, a trail of suspicious transactions has led her straight to Blackwell International—and to Adrian Blackwell, its ruthless billionaire CEO.

Adrian has his own reason for digging into the past. His father died believing that someone inside the Blackwell empire was moving money through a network connected to the same scandal that ruined the Laurent family.

Neither of them trusts the other.

But when an investigation makes Amara a target, Adrian offers her a deal she never expected: a one-year marriage.

It is supposed to be nothing more than a contract. No forced intimacy. No interference in each other's investigations. Financial independence. Separate private lives. One year—and then they walk away.

But the deeper Amara digs, the more dangerous the truth becomes.

Someone wanted her father's name destroyed. Someone inside the Blackwell family may know why. And the man she has married may be closer to the truth than she ever imagined.

Then her first love returns—with secrets of his own.

As betrayal, revenge, and buried family secrets collide, Amara must decide how much she is willing to sacrifice to uncover the truth.

Because their marriage may have been built on revenge...

but what happens when revenge turns into love?

Chapter 1 The Signature That Lied
The signature at the bottom of the document was my father's. But the handwriting wasn’t. I stared at the page beneath the record room's weak yellow light, my fingers tightening around the file's edges. Daniel Laurent. Even after nine years, seeing his name still did something to me. Not pain exactly. Something colder. Something that had never learned how to die. I lowered my eyes to the signature again. My father signed thousands of documents during his years at Laurent Holdings. I had seen His handwriting on birthday cards, school forms, letters, even the ridiculous notes he used to leave on the kitchen counter when he traveled. His capital L always curved slightly to the left. His final stroke was short. This one wasn't. The signature on the document was almost perfect. Almost. But almost wasn't good enough for me. I was a forensic financial analyst. Details were my job. And someone had just made a very expensive mistake. I pulled my phone from my coat pocket and took a photograph. Then another. The document was old, nearly a decade old, but the transaction attached to it had always bothered me. It was one of the records connected to the financial scandal that had destroyed Laurent Holdings. The scandal that had destroyed my family. The scandal that had turned my father from a respected business person into a man the entire country believed had stolen eighty million dollars. I had spent years trying to understand what happened. Not because I wanted revenge. At least, that's what I told myself. I wanted the truth. I traced the transaction number with my finger. The payment had supposedly been authorized by my father and transferred to a company I'd never heard of. Vantage Meridian Holdings. A shell company, according to the records. But whoever had created it had been careful. Too careful. I opened the second file beside me. The dates matched. My pulse quickened. The transaction from the first document appeared again, this time under a different reference number. That shouldn't have been possible. I leaned closer. There it was. The same amount. The same date. Two different descriptions. Someone had deliberately buried the transaction. My father hadn't done this. I was certain of it. But certainty wasn't evidence. And I had learned a long time ago that the truth meant nothing without proof. I reached for my notebook. My handwriting filled the page in neat, compact lines. Vantage Meridian Holdings. $4.8 million. Two reference numbers. Possible altered authorization. I paused. Then I added one more line. Find the original document. A faint sound came from behind me. I froze. Footsteps. Slow. Measured. Coming down the corridor. The sensible thing would have been to close the file and leave. Instead, I closed the file and switched off the desk lamp. Darkness swallowed the room. The footsteps stopped outside the door. My heartbeat became painfully loud. I checked my watch. 8:47 p.m. Nobody was supposed to be here. The door handle moved. Once. Twice. Then stopped. I slipped my phone into my pocket and stepped silently toward the shelves. The door opened. A man entered. I couldn't see his face. Only the outline of his body against the dim hallway light. He stood still for several seconds. Then he walked directly toward the desk. Toward the files. My stomach tightened. He knew exactly where they were. I crouched behind a row of cabinets, barely breathing. The man picked up the document I'd been examining. He flipped through it. Then he cursed quietly. “It's not here.” Another voice came from the hallway. “You checked the Laurent file?” “Yes.” “Then keep looking.” My fingers curled around my notebook. Laurent. They knew. The second man stepped inside. His voice was deeper. Older. “Victor wants this handled before anyone else finds it.” Victor. The name lodged in my mind. I couldn't see either man's face, but I memorized everything else: their voices, their movements, the way they spoke as though the records belonged to them. The first man opened another drawer. “What if she's already found something?” My blood ran cold. “Who?” A pause. Then the older man answered. “Daniel Laurent's daughter.” Everything inside me stopped. The first man gave a nervous laugh. “She actually came back?” “Yes.” “When?” “Recently.” “And Victor knows?” “He knows enough.” I pressed my hand over my mouth. My mind raced. Daniel Laurent's daughter. They weren't talking about some stranger. They were talking about me. I hadn't used the Laurent name publicly in years. I'd built a life under another name. Amara Vale. As far as the world knew, Amara Laurent had disappeared with the rest of her family's reputation. But someone knew. Someone had been watching. The older man's voice came again. “Find out what she knows.” The lights suddenly flickered. Both men went silent. I didn't wait. I slipped my phone into my pocket and moved toward the emergency exit at the back of the records room. One step. Then another. The men were still talking. I pushed the door open just enough to squeeze through. And ran. I didn't stop until I reached the stairwell. Only then did I allow myself to breathe. My hands were shaking. Not because they'd found me. Because they'd said his name. My father's name. And for the first time in nine years, I knew one thing for certain. Someone feared what Daniel Laurent had left behind. And now they knew I was looking for it.
