Chapter One
Opening Chapter
Abdelrahman is talking to himself as he drives the train, whispering his thoughts.
āIām driving the train now⦠Iāll reach the station soon.
Whatās left of my salary are just a few pounds, barely enough for a couple of daysā¦
Here comes the station, getting closerā¦
And my cigarettes are finished tooā¦
What time is it now?
Twelve midnightā¦
Iām late, this is exactly my arrival time inside the stationā¦
Let me increase the speed a littleā¦
Did you forget youāre just a sweeper, Abdelrahman?
Five kilometers left and Iāll enter the stationā¦
First thing when I get back, Iāll buy a bottle to ease the burden a littleā¦
Whatās wrong with the brakes? Too stiff, the pressureās weak⦠you need maintenance, sweeperā¦
Donāt stop now, itās almost doneā¦
Finally, Iāve arrived. Feels like the trip was endlessā¦
The sky is heavy with water, looks like itās going to rainā¦
Whereās the jacket?
Passengers are gone, time to grind the sweeperā¦
Hereās the jacketā¦
Come here, itās coldā¦
Where did this cigarette come from? Mustāve left it in the jacket pocketā¦
How much is this? 500⦠good. Iāll get a bottle for 200 and keep 300.
What will I do with them? Damn the kids and whoever brought them into this worldā¦
Death wouldāve been easierā¦
Trainās grinded, time to leaveā¦
I knew it was going to rainā¦
Go inside, Abdelrahmanā¦
Minaās shop is lit, thank God youāre open, if I found you closed, tonight wouldāve been hellā¦
Give me one of those bottles I usually take, Minaā¦
Should I open it now or wait until I get home?
Better open it now, talk to the bottle instead of talking to myselfā¦
Zeinab and the kids must be asleep by nowā¦
Strong, burning, bitter taste, but it hit my head straight awayā¦
And now what, Abdelrahman? Tomorrow is your last day at work, youāll retireā¦
If today is the end of the month and youāve only got 300 pounds left, what will you do when your pension comes, half your salary? If tomorrow never comesā¦
Zeinab and the kids asleep as always⦠itās been years since I last saw them awake.
I come when theyāre sleeping, leave when theyāre sleepingā¦
How much is left in you? Good⦠Iāll finish you in the morning, my darling.
Whoever invented alcohol deserves a place in Guinness⦠a great invention.
āYouāre a model employee, Abdelrahman. You served your time well. We all respect and appreciate you.ā
Thank you, sirā¦
And now youāre retired, Abdelrahman⦠the day you dreaded has finally arrivedā¦
Everyone prepared for this day, except youā¦
---
āFrom the first month of retirement, debts started piling upā¦
House rent, childrenās expenses, food and drink⦠where do I get the money?
Zeinab canāt even look at me anymore, and honestly, I canāt look at her either⦠but sheās right, after all. Iām home all the time, and the pension is uselessā¦
Are you going to keep talking to yourself, Abdelrahman? Go get another bottleā¦
Iām coming, Zeinab, where else can I goā¦
Itās midnight⦠are you still awake? Go to sleep, Zeinab, sleepā¦
Since I retired, sheās been in my face all the time. Iām sick of her, and sheās sick of meā¦
And yet, before, you used to complain that she was always asleep⦠Drink, Abdelrahmanā¦
Another bottle, Minaā¦
Now itās raining⦠thank youā¦
If this house doesnāt collapse on the kids, theyāll drown in the rainwaterā¦
Winter has become unbearable because of this damned houseā¦
Drink, Abdelrahman, drinkā¦
I hope Zeinab has fallen asleep, so she wonāt nag me again about the unpaid rent, expenses, and debtsā¦
Arenāt you going to stop talking to yourself, Abdelrahman?
Anyone else in my place wouldāve ended up in the mental asylum by now⦠five kids and their motherā¦
You did this to yourself, spent your youth in the jobā¦
And still, you shouldnāt have had so many childrenā¦
Itās all Zeinabās fault⦠thatās how Upper Egyptians are, they love having many childrenā¦
I told her, āEnough after Emamā⦠she said, āHe needs a siblingā⦠then came Hossamā¦
I told her again, āEnoughā⦠she said, āI want a girlā⦠then came Hananā¦
I said, āLetās stop here, donāt leave the girl aloneā⦠then came Gharamā¦
No excuse left⦠what could I do, keep the girl locked in her motherās womb? Thatās what happened, Abdelrahman⦠and if you donāt like it, take it up with herā¦
And she sealed it with Alaa, saying, āIt was a mistakeāā¦ā
---
Abdelrahman opens the door, drenched from the rain, holding his bottle of liquor.
He tiptoes inside, afraid to wake anyone up.
He sits on the chair, lights a cigarette, listens to the rain pounding louder.
Zeinab comes out of her room and sits in front of him.
