The sky over Kassala was still shrouded in darkness, the stars shimmering faintly behind drifting gray clouds, when Omar’s vehicle rolled forward—indistinguishable from the Sudanese army’s own trucks. Omar sat behind the wheel himself, and beside him Yasser clutched a modern automatic rifle. In the rear bed of the truck, Sheikh Tariq’s men sat ready, tense, and fully armed for any confrontation that might threaten the convoy.
