Chapter one
Finding a well paying job in Santa Greta was a difficult feat for Victoria until she got employed to be a nanny in the Abernathy household. It was indeed the best offer ever, as her accommodation, feeding and clothing was taken care of by the patriarch of the house.
It's been six months since she began working with the Abernathys and she had grown to love Adrian and little Audrey. The man who had employed her was seldomly around to witness the progress she had made with the children.
"Them chits lost their ma and Pa in a gruesome accident" one of the maids had told her one time. She looked at the playroom where the children were seated and was moved with pity for them. She knew what it was to be an orphan. It took her a while to be able to get their trust. Audrey would cry and cry calling for her mother till her fair face was red and puffy like a ripe tomato. Adrian on the hand, was as silent as ever refusing to speak with anyone.
She had wanted to draw the attention of her boss to the children's well-being, but the man was never around and whenever he came back, she would be fast asleep. She would also miss him in the mornings as he would leave before everyone was up.
"Miss Vicki can we go play outside?" Audrey's shy voice threw her back to reality. The little girl stared up at her with wide grey eyes.
"Sure we can go play" she picked the girl up. "Where is your brother?"
Audrey pointed her little finger to the left where Adrian just stood in silence watching the garden.
Victoria sighed and went to the boy. She knew she would not get answers from him but she wouldn't leave him on his own. The boy had even improved compared to the first two months of her arrival when he would refuse to let anyone near him and lock himself up in his room.
"Do you want to play?" Victoria asked but the boy remained mute. She asked three more times and then decided to go with his sister who was getting impatient by the minute.
"Let's play soldier" the voice behind her said. Victoria's face reddened with shock as she turned to look at the boy.
"Did you just speak?"
Adrian nodded his head and repeated what he had said, this time with a playful smile. Victoria was more than happy to hear the boy finally speaking.
"Sure let's play soldier" she responded. She took the children outside and played with them. They picked flowers from the garden and also had a lovely picnic as requested by the boy. Victoria wished that her boss could see this.
She began to wonder if the man even cared about the children. He had never tried creating a bond with them since she had been there. She wrote a letter once telling him about the children's progress. She wasn't quite sure if the man had noticed the letter but she had placed it on his favorite dining chairs. She was very certain he must have sat on it to eat dinner.
"Miss Vicki itchy" Audrey was scratching her body. They had played so much that they were sweating profusely and in serious need of a shower. She took them inside and had dinner made for them before supervising their bath time. She allowed them watch the television for sometime before getting them ready for bed. Audrey began to cry for her mother again.
Victoria already exhausted, tried her best to comfort the child but nothing she did was working.
"This is going to be a long night" she said to herself in exhaustion.

"How could she do this to me? I gave her everything. What more did she want?" Simon bellowed at his friends. He had gone to meet up with them at their usual bar after work to drink a few bottles before heading home. This had become his routine . He didn't know what to do with his current life and proceeded to befriend drinking to forget his sorrows and grief.
He held his head in his hands trying to decipher why the universe was being unfair to him. First it was his brother, now his girlfriend was in some video blowing some guy. He raised his head to find one of his friends still watching the video and smiling.
"She sure does know how to blow man, look at her go" David spoke and the other friend Greg nudged him to stop.
"Sorry man, a slut is a slut. You did everything for her and she still cheated" Greg tried to comfort him but it wasn't working.
"Come on Simon, let's just drink. I'll order us the bar's strongest combo and you'll forget about all of these" David motioned to the bartender and began ordering their drinks.
Simon really wanted to forget everything. The betrayal, the pain, the anger and the grief. He wanted to forget it all so he took the drink and downed it pretty fast.
"Slow down bro" David chuckled as they watched him reach for another shot.

Victoria had finally succeeded in putting Audrey to sleep. She ached all over from running and playing with them during the day. She took a long warm shower and got dressed in her purple pyjamas. She took out a novel and her glasses, heading to the sitting room.
She eventually passed out reading the book and didn't know when her boss returned. She didn't hear his car revving neither did she hear him walking up to the couch where she was sleeping.
"Victoria?" The man shook her gently. Victoria muttered some words inaudibly. He shook her again and this time she woke up slowly. When her eyes adjusted to the sitting room once more, she found her boss staring down at her. She quickly jumped up and arranged herself.
"Mr Abernathy Sir, you are back. Good evening sir" She stuttered.
