CHAPTER FOUR: The Reality TV Offer

484 Words
The call came on a Tuesday. Selene was in the kitchen, attempting her most ambitious cooking project yet, a three-course meal for a potential investor dinner when her phone rang. Unknown number. It was a producer from a television network. Family Connections, the show was called. A reality program that brought struggling families to a luxury resort for a week of therapy, team building, and emotional growth. "We've been following your social media presence," the producer explained. Her name was Carmen, and she sounded like she drank coffee for breakfast and business for lunch. "You have a significant following. You're relatable. Aspirational. We'd love to have you and your family on the show." "I don't think—" Selene started, but Carmen was already talking over her. "We'd cover all costs. Five-star resort in the Swiss Alps. Private spa sessions. Professional therapists. And the compensation is generous. Your family would receive $250,000 just for participating." "That's not—" "Plus, the exposure is incredible. Families who've appeared on the show have gone on to write books, do speaking engagements, build personal brands. It's an amazing opportunity." Selene almost said no. But then she thought about the Westbrooks, the family she'd read about in the news. Married ten years, on the verge of divorce. Two kids who probably didn't understand what was happening. A marriage that was crumbling in real time. And she thought about how close she'd come to losing everything. "Let me talk to my husband," she said. Alexander's response was immediate and negative. "Absolutely not. We're not putting our family on television. We're not discussing our private life with strangers. And we're certainly not doing it for money." "It's not about the money," Selene said carefully. They were in their bedroom, late at night, after the children were asleep. "It's about connection. There are other families struggling. Maybe we could help them. Maybe we could show them that it's possible to come back from the edge." "We're not therapists, Selene. We're not qualified to help anyone." "No, but we know what it feels like to almost lose everything. We know what it feels like to choose love every day. Maybe that's enough." He was quiet for a very long moment. "You feel like we almost lost everything? But we didn't." "I know." She took his hand. "But I know what it feels like if we had. And I know how close we came. So does the universe." "The universe doesn't work that way." "Maybe it does. Maybe this is why I got a second chance. Not just for me. For all of us. For everyone who needs to remember that love is worth fighting for." Alexander pulled her close, his forehead resting against hers. "If we do this, and I'm saying if, we do it together. No hiding. No performance. We tell the truth. All of it." "All of it," she promised.
