Chapter 003

1515 Words
RUBY Five long, agonizing months had passed since I'd been trapped in this luxurious prison. It had taken me months to accept the harsh reality: I'd been sold to Liam Williams, a ruthless and arrogant Mafia lord. The pain of that realization still lingered, a constant ache in my heart. As I scrubbed the floor, my mind wandered back to Zac, my brother. What had he been thinking when he agreed to this? Did he see me as nothing more than a cheap, worthless commodity? The thought of his betrayal was a festering wound, one that I couldn't seem to heal. I was tied to this life now, a life of bondage and servitude. I'd give anything to go back to my old life, to study hard and make something of myself. But those were just wishes, futile and impossible. Liam's cold, arrogant voice echoed in my mind, a constant reminder of my situation. "You're mine now," he'd said, his smirk twisting his face into a cruel mask. I felt a wave of helplessness wash over me, followed by a crushing sense of worthlessness. As I finished cleaning the floor, I stood up, my eyes scanning the room for my next task. That's when I saw him - Liam, standing in the doorway with one of his guards. His presence was like a cold wind, sending shivers down my spine. I kept my eyes downcast, avoiding eye contact as I waited for him to pass. But instead, he stopped in front of me, his eyes fixed on the floor. "You missed a spot," he said, his voice dripping with disdain. Liam pointed to a section of the floor I had already scrubbed clean, but to my horror, it was now covered in dirt. My eyes widened as I spotted the bag of dirt clutched in the guard's hand. A wave of outrage washed over me. Wasn't it enough that I was the sole cleaner of this vast mansion, toiling from dawn till dusk? Didn't Liam think it was sufficient torture to have me work myself to exhaustion while the numerous maids lounged idly, drawing a paycheck for doing nothing? Not a single one of them dared offer me a helping hand, fearing Liam's wrath. Going against his commands was a death sentence, and they knew it. I was alone in this, forced to bear the weight of Liam's cruelty. My eyes locked onto Liam's, blazing with anger and resentment. How could he be so heartless, so cruel? But his expression remained impassive, his eyes glinting with amusement. A spark of rage ignited within me, fueled by months of pent-up anger and frustration. My eyes blazed with fury as I clenched my fists around the rag, my mind screaming, "Kill him!" But I knew better. One wrong move, one careless word, could mean death. I gritted my teeth, forcing myself to remain silent. "Do you have something to say?" Liam asked, his voice stern and unyielding. I shook my head, my voice barely above a whisper. "Nnn...no." Liam's smile was a thin, cruel line. "That's what I thought," he said, before turning and walking away, leaving me seething with anger and resentment. I controlled myself as I bent down cleaning the floor again, soon I was done and it was nighttime, I had barely eaten anything and I was going to go to bed this way, I got to my not so big room that had just one tiny mattress in it with a fan, I stared in disgust at how pathetic my life had become, even my room back at home was much more bigger than what I had here but I’d better not complain, as I was nothing but a slave here. As I finished freshening up, I felt a wave of exhaustion wash over me. I trudged towards my bed, my eyelids heavy with the promise of sleep. But as I lay down, my mind began to wander, drifting back to the familiar faces of my family. Mom and Zac's faces floated in my mind's eye, and I couldn't help but wonder how they were doing without me. Despite the pain and betrayal Zac had inflicted upon me, I still missed them both dearly. The ache of their absence had become a constant companion, one that I couldn't shake off. I thought back to the day I was brought to this house, and how Liam had systematically cut me off from the outside world. No phone, no internet, no visitors. I was a prisoner in every sense of the word, trapped in this gilded cage with no escape in sight. The loneliness was suffocating, a heavy weight that pressed upon my chest. I felt like a part of me was dying, slowly but surely, with each passing day. As I drifted off to sleep, a knock at the door jolted me awake. One of Liam's guards stood in the doorway, his expression impassive. "Your attention is required," he said, his voice firm. I raised an eyebrow, incredulous. What could Liam possibly want with me at this ungodly hour? I reluctantly tossed off the covers and made my way to his chamber. Liam sat in a throne-like chair, a cigarette dangling from his lips. He blew out a plume of smoke, his eyes locking onto mine with a mischievous glint. I knew that look all too well – it spelled trouble. "Come, come wash my feet," he instructed, his voice dripping with condescension. He gestured to a bucket of water beside him. My anger simmered just below the surface. Even at this late hour, he demanded I cater to his every whim. He could have easily summoned one of the maids, but no, he delighted in rubbing my face in my own worthlessness. I approached him reluctantly, my eyes fixed on the bucket. As I lifted his legs and gently submerged them in the water, a dark thought crossed my mind. With one swift snap, I could break the fragile bones connecting his legs to his feet. I glanced up, my gaze meeting Liam's profile. He was lost in his own world, puffing on his cigarette with an air of superiority. For a moment, I savored the fantasy of rebellion, of striking back against my tormentor. But I knew better. I was trapped, and Liam held the keys. The door burst open, and several guards dragged in a beautiful woman, her eyes wide with terror. "We caught her trying to flee the city, sir," Theo reported, his voice firm. Liam's gaze snapped towards the woman, his eyes boring into hers. "Liam, baby, I wasn't leaving!" she pleaded, tears streaming down her face. "I was just going to get some goods from the neighboring city, please believe me." "Baby?" I repeated inwardly, my mind racing with the implications. The way she said it, with such familiarity and desperation, suggested an intimacy that went beyond mere acquaintances. It seemed that Liam and Rachael had a history, perhaps even a romantic one. The thought sent a shiver down my spine as I wondered what had really transpired between them. Liam's expression remained impassive, his voice dripping with venom. "You really thought you could steal from me, Rachael?" He spat out the words, his hand instinctively reaching for his gun. Liam's voice was laced with venom as he sneered at Rachael's lifeless body. "I gave you everything, and yet you let your greed consume you," he spat, his eyes blazing with anger. "You forgot who you were messing with. You forgot the monster I am." His words hung in the air, heavy with malice and a hint of sadness. It was clear that Rachael's betrayal had struck a nerve, and Liam's reaction was a testament to the depth of his emotions. Before the woman could respond, Liam pulled the trigger, and a bullet tore through her skull. I flinched, my heart racing as I stared at the lifeless body on the floor. Blood flowed freely towards me, and I felt a wave of nausea wash over me. Liam's voice was cold, detached. "You know what to do," he said, nodding at Theo. The guards dragged the body away, leaving me shaken and trembling. Liam's gaze snapped back to me, his eyes blazing with anger. "And why did you stop?" he barked, his voice making me jump. I stuttered, fighting back tears. "I'm... I'm sorry." Liam's glare was withering, but I stood frozen, unable to move or speak. A voice echoed in my head, "What have you gotten yourself into, Ruby?" A chill ran down my spine as I gazed at Rachael's lifeless body. "If he could do this to someone he supposedly loved," I thought, "what chance do I stand? I'm nothing but a slave to him, a mere pawn in his game of power and control." Fear gripped my heart, and I silently prayed for a miracle. "Mother Nature, please," I implored, "provide me with a way out of this nightmare. Show me a path to freedom, and give me the strength to escape this harsh reality."
