He couldn’t move his feet and he remained glued to his spot as he continued to watch the kid with tears streaming down his face. He could see Evan walking to meet him and he turned back to the passage where he had emerged from.
“Daren!” Evan called as he ran after him.
“Daren, stop it!” He yelled as he grabbed hold of him.
“I told you I can’t stand her! I can’t stand her presence around me! I never knew she was here, I forgot that she was supposed to be here,” he cried bitterly.
“I’m so sorry, man. But how long are you going to do this? How long?” Evan lamented.
“As long as I continue to see her face. She gives me memories. Both the bad and the good ones,” he cried.
“It’s enough. You have to focus on the good memories and leave the bad ones aside. She is just a child, she is innocent,” Evan advised.
He sniffed and wiped his tears off slowly.
“Come on,” Evan urged as he took the briefcase from him and they both walked back into the living room.
He swallowed hard as he saw May who had turned in his direction. Her small pink lips broke into a smile that made his heart melt.
“Da da,” she called in excitement with her eyes bubbling with joy.
“Da da!” She cried and threw her frail legs towards him.
His arms opened wide in excitement as he saw her running to meet him. With tears streaming down his face, he embraced her in his arms tightly with her head resting on his shoulder.
He continued to sob heavily while Evan watched silently with his face full of emotions.
“Seems like we have a..” Toyo was heard speaking as she walked into the living room. She stopped abruptly as she saw Daren and May together. Her eyes bulged and she looked at her husband who nodded at her.
“Um, I will just go back to the kitchen,” she muttered with a smile and returned to the kitchen.
With the baby in his arms, he walked to the sofa and as he sat, Evan’s boys ran over to him.
“Hey, tell your soldiers to be careful with my princess,” he said with a chuckle as he saw the boys hovering around May.
Evan laughed as he walked to the sofa with a bottle of brandy and two glasses.
“They might end up fighting over her,” he said and they laughed again.
“Hey, did you miss daddy?” Daren asked as he made her stand on his legs while she giggled and rubbed his head.
“She sure misses you alot,” Evan said as he handed a glass over to him.
He took a sip from his drink and made May sip a little from the glass. She made a bitter face and jumped out of his legs immediately while the men laughed.
“You know, Lisa would have scolded me for doing this,” he said with a smile as he sipped from his glass.
“Hmm,” Evan mumbled with a smile.
He kept silent and smiled wryly.
“Yes, you are right. I haven’t moved on,” he confessed.
“I know,” Evan acknowledged.
“How is she faring?” He asked.
“A bit better than before. She keeps asking about you,” he said.
“The other time at the court, someone saw me and they sent the picture to my mom. She scolded me about it. They don’t want me involved in her affairs,” he related.
“I understand. But your presence will be of great comfort to her. She really needs you at this moment,” he said.
He scoffed and shook his head.
“I..I don’t even know what I want. I don’t know if this is the end of the road for Lisa and I,” he said as he stared at the glass in his hand.
“Do you want the road to actually get to an end?” Evan asked seriously.
“I don’t know,” he said with a scoff as he sipped from his drink.
They both kept silent for a moment and his eyes fell on the excited May.
“I can’t believe I still see her as my daughter,” he said.
“She is your daughter, you played the fatherly role in her life so she is your daughter. Family is not always related by blood, you know,” Evan said and he smiled.
“Somehow, I want my family back,” he said sadly.
“If it’s the only way you can be happy, then do it,” Evan advised.
He chuckled and shook his head.
“I don’t think it’s ever going to happen,” he said and Evan kept silent.
“Did that bastard return? Did he return to claim the child?” Daren asked.
“No, he didn’t. As a matter of fact, Lisa believes he is the one setting her up. And I believe everything was planned,” Evan replied.
“Including Lisa cheating on me?” He asked.
“No, not that part. I understand that she cheated on you, but I believe someone paid that dude to blow up everything in front of the Taiwo’s family.
They did it to destabilize your marriage, thereby, destabilizing your life,” Evan said thoughtfully.
He kept silent as he listened to Evan.
“Dotun and Diana,” he muttered loudly and Evan’s eyes raised.
“They’re both up to something. Ever since the whole thing came up, they’ve been wearing this mischievous smile on their faces,” he said thoughtfully.
“Really? Well, Dotun and his wife had never liked you and Melisa,” Evan said and he nodded.
“Those two are up to something. Tell me, did Lisa give any explanation regarding why she cheated on me?” He asked.
“We haven’t talked about that part. We are deeply engrossed in finding a way to get her out of that place,” Evan replied.
He kept silent for a moment.
“Maybe you should speak to her yourself,” Evan suggested.
Just then, Toyosi walked into the living room with perspiration all over her face.
“Food is ready,” she announced with a smile and the men smiled broadly.
After spending time at Evan’s home, he headed to the mansion. As he stepped into the living room, he could see his mother sitting on the couch with a tall, slim, fair pretty girl sitting beside her.
She was elegantly dressed in a red jumpsuit and black heels and her long pretty face was wearing expensive makeup. His eyes never left her face and he could see her laughing as she chatted excitedly with his mother on the couch.
“Oh, he is here,” Elsa Boseman’s cheerful voice sounded as she stood up from the couch and the girl stood up beside her.
He stopped for a moment as he gazed at their faces in dismay.
“Welcome home, son,” Elsa said with a smile as she walked towards him and stood beside him.
“Meet Stefany, the adorable daughter of Senator Lawrence, your soon to be wife,” she introduced with a smile as she gestured for the girl to come over.
He froze and his brows gathered immediately as he saw the girl walking elegantly to meet him.
