With his hands on the balcony rail,, he gazed at the beautiful horizon. It was a beautiful morning and the chirps of birds could be heard as they flew around the tall trees in the yard.
Last night was hell as he wasn't able to sleep. Thoughts of what awaited him become a burden he couldn't bear.
He thought of Lisa and he sighed heavily. He doesn't want to think about her at the moment, he thought as he rubbed his palm over his head.
"You're awake," he heard his mother's voice behind him.
He turned and saw her dressed in a white silky night dress that stopped right on her knees. Her tender smooth palms caressed his shoulder as she stood behind him.
"Mother," he called calmly.
"Son," she called tenderly.
He sighed and she stood beside him with their eyes staring into the open.
"I need you to be strong for what awaits you today. No matter what happens, you should be brave enough to make bold decisions. Even if it means letting go," she said as she stared at the side of his face.
He scoffed and sighed.
"You're talking about letting Lisa go, right?" He asked and she kept silent.
"And what if May is mine?" He asked.
"It won't change the fact that she cheated on you," she said firmly.
He kept silent and heaved a sigh.
"The Taiwo's household will not tolerate any act of infidelity and therefore, Melisa has to go. So, brace yourself," she said as she patted his shoulders and walked out.
He broke into tears as soon as she walked away.
"Lisa, why did you do this to me, why?!" He cried out loud.
*
The door opened and her eyes flashed as she heard the creaking of the door. She sat up immediately on hearing footsteps coming into the room.
"Madam, your presence is requested," the man in black suit said to her.
She was helped up from the floor and she dragged her weary feet on the floor as the men helped her out of the room.
"Dr Marvin, the result took longer than expected," Mrs. Selina's voice sounded from the couch where she was seated, glamorously dressed in a black fur coat which stopped right on her knees.
"I'm sorry, madam. I was busy a lot and I had to rush down here this evening with the result," the middle aged tall lanky man said anxiously with the brown envelope in his hand.
Seated beside Mrs. Taiwo was her daughter, Elsa Boseman, whose face wore a cold stern look.
Also present in the room was Charles Boseman who was carrying the sleeping May in his arms. Dotun and his wife Diana were also seated, alongside Evan who was sitting beside Daren on the couch.
Just then, Melisa walked in, accompanied by the two men in black suits and all eyes turned in her direction.
Daren raised his head to look in her direction and for a moment, his heart became heavy as he saw her pitiful state.
"Let her sit on the floor so she shouldn't contaminate my couch. She's a virus," Mrs. Selina said from her seat.
Silence fell into the room and she sat on the floor dejectedly with her head bowed.
"You can as well proceed, Dr Marvin. As you can see, the day is getting dark and it's about to rain," Elsa Boseman urged.
"Um, mother, the young man is not here yet," Dotun reminded his mother.
"His presence does not matter," Mrs. Selina shot.
Just then, Jerry walked into the room and all eyes were turned in his direction.
"I'm glad I didn't miss this part," he said with a smirk as he looked at the mean faces staring in his direction.
"Will you shut up?! You irresponsible young i***t!" Mrs. Selina yelled.
"Oh..um..," He stammered and waved at everyone sheepishly before walking to take his seat.
"Stand up!" Elsa yelled and he stood up abruptly.
"Mr. Marvin, please proceed," she urged as she heaved a sigh of frustration.
"Um.here is the result for the test," the doctor said as he brought out a white sheet of paper from the envelope.
"What does it state?" Mrs. Selina asked impatiently.
"According to genetics.." He tried to speak again.
"Spare us all that grammar and tell us what we need to know," Elsa cut in.
"Oh..okay," he stammered as he adjusted his glasses.
There was rising tension in the air and Melisa raised her head up with her heart pounding so fast as she stared at the doctor.
"According to the result of the paternity test, Daren Taiwo is not the father of the child," the doctor spilled and silence fell into the room.
"No..no!!" Melisa cried from where she was seated on the floor with her hands raised in the air.
"Let me see for myself," Mrs Selina muttered sadly as the doctor handed the result over to her.
She shut her eyes for a moment as Elsa took the result from her frail hands which were trembling greatly.
"I can explain! I can explain, mother!" Melisa cried as she crawled to the middle of the room.
"Daren, be a man. It's okay," Evan consoled Daren who had broken into hot tears.
"Son, you have to be strong," his father whispered to him from where he sat.
"How dare you, Lisa!" Elsa Boseman's thunderous voice sounded all over the room.
"Mother..I can explain!" She cried profusely as she knelt before her with her palms clenched together.
"I guess I have to leave with my baby, now," Jerry said as he stood up.
"How dare you?!" Daren barked as he stood up vehemently.
"It has been confirmed, Mr. Daren Taiwo," Jerry said with a smirk.
"You bastard!" Daren slammed as he surged towards him and punched him to the floor where he continued dealing him blows.
The house was thrown into a pandemonium which awakened the sleeping May and she began to cry. She was dropped on the floor by Charles who rushed to separate the men fighting on the floor.
"Daren!" Elsa yelled as she pushed him away from Jerry who was getting up on his feet.
He began to pant with his eyes as red as blood.
"You want to kill him?! Come on, kill him and forget the fact that your slut of a wife opened her legs freely for him!" She yelled in his face.
"No, mother..I did not!" Melisa continued to weep profusely from the floor.
"Now young man, get out of my sight! Melisa will bring your child over to you!" Mrs. Selina yelled at Jerry who was adjusting his dress.
"Okay, madam," he said as he shot Daren an angry look before walking away.
"Daren, Daren," Evan called after Daren who was walking back to the couch.
"Now, you," Mrs. Selina said, turning her attention to Melisa.
"The divorce papers will be ready in a few days," she said.
"Mother, please don't do this to me!!" She cried with her hands in the air.
"Diana!" She called and Diana stood up from her seat immediately.
"Yes, mother," she answered as she tried to conceal the smile on her lips.
"You and the maids, go up to her room. Bring out everything that belongs to her," she ordered.
"Okay, mother," she acquiesced and stormed away exuberantly.
"My mothers, please don't do this to me!" Melisa cried on the floor.
"You slut! How dare you fool us into taking responsibility for someone else's child! Mother, she needs to be arrested!" Dotun slammed from where he was standing.
"No need for that. We've seen enough of her pitiful face already," Mrs. Selina said and he fumed.
"Mother, please," Melisa cried as she carried her baby who was crawling to meet her.
Just then, Diana and the maids appeared from the stairs, carrying her luggage.
"No! No!" She cried as she dropped May on the floor and fell on her knees again.
“Now take your bastard daughter and get out of my sight! If you ever step foot into this mansion again, you will die!” Elsa Boseman’s thunderous voice sounded all over the room.
Her lips quivered as the tears streamed down her cheek freely.
“No..mother in-law, please! I’m innocent!” She cried from the floor where she was kneeling before Elsa Boseman.
“Leave, you slut! Take this bastard and get out of this place!” She heard Mrs. Taiwo’s voice and her tears increased.
“Guards! Guards! Take her out!” Dotun's provoking voice sounded all over the room.
“No..I’m innocent, please don’t throw me out! Mother in-law!” She cried as she rushed over to Elsa Boseman.
“No.. mother, I have nowhere to go!” She cried as she knelt before the two women.
She was pulled up by the guards along with her daughter who was still crying uncontrollably. As she struggled with the men, she took a glance at Daren who was sitting dejectedly on the long couch with his head bowed.
“My love, I'm innocent! Please don’t let them throw me out! Daren!” She shouted with her whole strength but he remained silent and didn’t look in her direction.
**
"Oh, thank goodness, the virus is out," Mrs. Selina said as she stood up gracefully from the couch.
"Daren, you need to be strong and stop weeping like a baby. Your obstinate heart got you into this mess today. If you had listened to your mother and I earlier, Melisa would have been far away from your life," she said to him.
He stood up immediately with his dark eyes staring at her furiously. He shook his head in disbelief and stormed up the stairs with Evan running after him.
"Elsa, fix the rest," Selina said to her daughter and walked out immediately.
