Chapter 15: Tree Lighting Ceremony Evergreen Hollow's town square hummed with anticipation as dusk approached. Hundreds of residents gathered around the massive pine tree, their breath visible in December air. Emma checked the lighting controls one final time, ensuring everything was ready for the big moment. "Sound system working?" Ryan appeared beside her, carrying two paper cups. "Tested and perfect." Emma accepted the offered hot chocolate. "Mayor Thomas has his speech ready?" "Short and sweet, as requested." Ryan smiled. "Though he did insist on telling the story about the first tree lighting ceremony." "Some traditions deserve preservation." Emma watched families claim viewing spots. "That story gets better every year." Children darted between adults, wearing Santa hats and carrying battery-operated candles. The high school choir assembled near the gazebo, warming up their voices for the carol program. "Look who made it." Ryan nodded toward the crowd. Emma spotted Sarah pushing David's grandmother in her wheelchair, making sure Linda Chen had a perfect view of the tree. All around them, neighbors helped elderly residents find comfortable places to watch. "Your parents are saving us spots." Ryan gestured to where George and Margaret stood. "Front row, as always." They made their way through the crowd, accepting greetings and well-wishes. Emma noticed how naturally Ryan moved among their neighbors, genuine warmth in every interaction. "Emma Gardner." Mrs. Thompson caught her sleeve. "That marketing video you made about the ceremony has brought three tour buses of visitors." "Just showcasing the town's natural charm." Emma smiled at her former librarian. "Though Ryan deserves credit for the historical details." "You two always did work well together." Mrs. Thompson's eyes twinkled. "Some partnerships just make sense." Before Emma could respond, Mayor Thomas approached the microphone. The crowd quieted, children settling against parents' legs. "Friends and neighbors." The mayor's voice carried clear in winter air. "Welcome to Evergreen Hollow's seventy-fifth annual tree lighting ceremony." Emma felt Ryan's shoulder brush hers as they stood listening to the familiar story. How the town had come together during hard times, sharing what little they had to create something magical for their children. "That first tree had only homemade ornaments." The mayor continued. "Cookies and paper chains, wooden stars and painted pinecones. But it shone with the light of community spirit." The high school choir began singing softly - "Silent Night" floating across the square. Emma remembered other ceremonies, other songs shared in this same space. "Today we continue that tradition." Mayor Thomas gestured to the waiting tree. "Not just lighting a tree, but celebrating the connections that make our town special." Ryan's hand found Emma's as the choir's volume grew. His fingers laced through hers, warm despite the cold air. Emma squeezed gently, acknowledging what neither could say aloud. "And now," The mayor raised his arms. "The moment we've all been waiting for. Emma, Ryan - if you would do the honors?" They stepped forward together, still holding hands. Emma reached for the control panel while Ryan addressed the crowd. "Everyone ready?" His voice carried excitement and joy. "Count with me!" The town square filled with united voices. "Ten... nine... eight..." Emma felt Ryan's thumb brush her knuckles. "Seven... six... five..." Children bounced with anticipation. "Four... three... two..." "One!" The shout came as one voice. Emma pressed the button. Light bloomed against winter darkness - thousands of tiny bulbs illuminating the massive pine from trunk to star. Gasps of delight rose from the crowd as hidden projectors cast snowflake patterns across the square. The choir launched into "Joy to the World" as residents admired the display. Emma watched faces lit by Christmas magic, seeing wonder reflect in every smile. "Beautiful." Ryan spoke close to her ear. "Just like you planned." "Like we planned." Emma corrected, turning to face him. "Some things need partnership." Caroling began in earnest, the whole town joining the choir. Ryan's voice blended with Emma's on familiar verses, their hands still linked as if afraid to let go. "Oh Christmas tree, oh Christmas tree..." The melody swelled around them. Emma noticed Sarah watching them with a knowing smile. Even Mayor Thomas seemed to direct his next announcement their way. "And now, our traditional walk through the winter light display." He gestured toward twinkling paths. "Hot chocolate and cookies available at all warming stations." The crowd began moving, following designated routes through holiday scenes. Emma and Ryan stayed behind, ensuring the tree's lighting sequence ran smoothly. "Remember your first tree lighting?" Ryan asked as the square quieted. "When we were kids?" "Mom bought us matching scarves." Emma smiled at the memory. "Red and green stripes." "You gave me half your cookies." Ryan touched her cheek gently. "Said Christmas magic tasted better shared." Emma met his eyes, seeing past and present merge. "Some wisdom survives childhood." "Speaking of which." Ryan reached into his coat pocket. "I have something for you." He produced a small box wrapped in silver paper. Emma unwrapped it carefully, revealing a delicate snow globe. Inside, a perfect miniature of tonight's town square tree glowed with tiny lights. "Ryan..." "Shake it." He urged softly. Emma turned the globe, watching pearl-white snow swirl around the scene. But something caught her eye - two small figures standing hand in hand beneath the tree. "Custom made." Ryan's voice held meaning beyond the gift. "Some moments deserve remembering." "It's perfect." Emma clutched the globe carefully. "But why..." "Because ten years ago, I was too scared to say what mattered." Ryan's free hand cupped her cheek. "Because sometimes we need second chances to get things right." The tree lights sparkled above them, casting magical patterns across fresh snow. In the distance, carolers' voices carried on winter air. Everything felt possible in that moment. "Emma." Ryan's thumb traced her jawline. "I..." "There you are!" Sarah's voice cut through the moment. "David's grandmother wants pictures with the tree." They stepped apart, Emma tucking the snow globe safely away. But their hands found each other again as they walked toward waiting friends. The evening continued in blur of photographs and carols, shared cookies and laughter. Emma noticed how Ryan kept close, their fingers brushing with each movement. Later, as the crowd thinned and lights dimmed, they stood again beneath the massive pine. "Successful ceremony." Emma checked final system readings. "Everything worked perfectly." "Almost everything." Ryan's voice held warmth. "Some moments got interrupted." Emma turned to face him, snowflakes catching in his hair. The tree lights painted everything in magical colors while carols echoed from distant corners. "Some moments deserve their own timing." She spoke softly. "Their own perfect space." Ryan stepped closer, one hand finding her waist. "Like a winter night under Christmas lights?" "Like coming home." Emma lifted her face to his. "And finally being brave enough to stay." Their lips met as the tree lights sparkled, casting star-patterns across fresh snow. Emma tasted peppermint and possibility, feeling pieces of past and future align. Behind them, the town square glowed with holiday magic. Ahead lay unwritten chapters and unspoken promises. But for now, there was only this moment - perfect as Christmas lights, sweet as second chances. Emma breathed in winter air and love, finally understanding. Some ceremonies marked endings, others beginnings. And sometimes, under just the right lights, they marked both at once. The massive pine stood witness, its lights reflecting in Emma's snow globe like captured stars. Tomorrow would bring new adventures, but tonight was for celebrating the magic of finding your way home. They walked toward Chen's gathering, shoulders touching, hands linked. Above them, the tree's star pointed toward endless possibility while Christmas lights transformed their hometown into something magical. Emma carried Ryan's gift and the warmth of his kiss, knowing some moments changed everything. Some hearts needed time to find their light. Some love stories were worth waiting for, perfect as winter stars, bright as Christmas dreams come true.
