Chapter 16: Sarah's Arrival Fresh snow blanketed the train platform as Emma waited for Sarah's arrival. The afternoon express from Manhattan pulled into Evergreen Hollow station, brakes squealing against winter rails. "Emma!" Sarah emerged from the first car, designer weekend bag in hand. "Your little town looks like a Christmas card." The friends embraced, Sarah's city perfume mixing with crisp mountain air. Emma helped with the luggage, leading the way to her parked car. "So this is where small-town magic happens." Sarah took in the decorated storefronts. "Your marketing videos didn't do it justice." "Wait until you see the town square at night." Emma navigated familiar streets. "The lighting ceremony was spectacular." Sarah studied her friend's face. "Seems like more than lights are sparking around here." Emma concentrated on driving, avoiding Sarah's knowing look. "The whole festival has exceeded expectations." "And the festival coordinator?" Sarah's tone held amusement. "How's working with Ryan been?" "Professional." Emma turned onto Main Street. "We make a good team." "Honey." Sarah touched her arm. "I've known you fifteen years. Professional doesn't make you smile like that." They parked outside The Evergreen Inn, where Margaret waited with fresh cookies and hot tea. Sarah charmed Emma's parents instantly, praising the inn's decor and sampling Margaret's baking with genuine appreciation. "Emma tells me you're a doctor?" George helped carry bags upstairs. "Emergency medicine." Sarah nodded. "Though lately I've been more concerned about this one's health." She bumped Emma's shoulder. "Working too hard, as usual." "The festival's been good for her." Margaret shared a knowing look with Sarah. "Being home, connecting with old friends." "Speaking of friends." Sarah unpacked in the guest room. "When do I get to properly meet the famous Ryan Mitchell?" "Tonight's winter market preview." Emma checked her watch. "He'll be there coordinating vendors." Sarah's eyes sparkled. "Perfect. I need to approve this second chance romance." "It's not..." Emma sighed. "Things are complicated." "Life's complicated." Sarah pulled her toward the door. "Love shouldn't be. Now show me this magical market of yours." The town square bustled with activity as vendors set up evening displays. Lights twinkled overhead while mouth-watering scents drifted from food stalls. "Emma!" Ryan approached, carrying two cups. "Brought your favorite cider. And you must be Sarah." "The one and only." Sarah accepted the extra cup. "Thanks for taking care of my workaholic friend." "More like she's taking care of the whole festival." Ryan's pride showed clearly. "Her marketing campaign brought record crowds." Sarah watched their interaction with interest, noting the way they gravitated toward each other, the shared glances and subtle touches. "Give me the tour?" Sarah linked arms with Emma. "Show me everything you've been working on." They wandered the market, Emma explaining each element while Ryan handled vendor needs. Sarah observed how her friend lit up discussing community projects, especially those involving the festival coordinator. "He's different." Sarah commented as they sampled hot chocolate. "More grounded than I remember." "Ten years changes people." Emma watched Ryan help Clara arrange her ornaments. "Some things don't change." Sarah squeezed her hand. "Like the way you look at each other when you think no one notices." Before Emma could respond, Ryan joined them. "Ladies, the candlemaker has new winter scents ready for testing." They spent the next hour exploring stalls, Sarah noting how naturally Ryan and Emma worked together. He anticipated her needs, while she completed his sentences. "Mind if I steal my best friend?" Sarah asked as evening deepened. "Girl talk needed." Ryan smiled warmly. "Take care of her. Market prep starts early tomorrow." Sarah led Emma to Chen's Restaurant, claiming a quiet booth. David brought their usual orders without asking. "Spill." Sarah stirred her tea. "What's really happening with you and Ryan?" Emma traced patterns in spilled sugar. "Nothing. Everything. I don't know." "Start with the tree lighting." Sarah pressed gently. "David's grandmother told me about the hand-holding and almost-kiss." "News travels fast in small towns." Emma smiled despite herself. "Honey." Sarah reached across the table. "I haven't seen you this alive in years. Your whole energy has changed." "Being home helps." Emma admitted. "The festival, family, community..." "And Ryan?" Sarah prompted. "Don't tell me he's just part of the scenery." Emma sighed, fingers finding the snow globe in her pocket. "He gave me this." Sarah examined the delicate globe, noting the two figures beneath the tree. "That's not a casual gift." "He's different now." Emma watched snow swirl around miniature figures. "More honest about what he wants." "And what do you want?" Sarah set the globe down gently. "Beyond corner offices and client meetings?" "I want..." Emma paused, finding truth. "I want what I see in this town. Real connections. Purpose. The chance to create something meaningful." "With someone meaningful?" Sarah's voice held understanding. "Maybe." Emma met her friend's eyes. "But what if we're too different now? What if we try and fail again?" "Oh, sweetie." Sarah squeezed her hand. "That's not the Emma Gardner I know. Since when do you let fear of failure stop you?" "This isn't a marketing campaign." Emma protested. "This is..." "Love?" Sarah supplied. "Because from where I'm sitting, that's exactly what this is." Emma stared out the window, watching snow fall on Main Street. Christmas lights reflected in glass while families hurried past, arms full of market treasures. "He feels like home." The admission came softly. "Not just the town or memories, but Ryan himself." "Then maybe it's time to trust that feeling." Sarah's voice gentled. "Some loves deserve second chances." They finished their drinks in comfortable silence, Sarah watching Emma process emotions. Outside, market lights turned winter evening magical. "Come on." Sarah stood, pulling Emma up. "One more market walk before bed. I need to approve more Christmas presents." They rejoined the crowded square, where Ryan directed cleanup crews. His face brightened seeing Emma return. "Everything okay?" He asked, concern evident. "Perfect." Sarah answered for both of them. "Just giving best friend approval." "And?" Ryan's eyes held hope. Sarah patted his arm. "Just don't mess up this time. Either of you." They parted ways - Ryan to final vendor checks, Emma and Sarah toward the inn. Fresh snow crunched beneath their boots while stars emerged above twinkling market lights. "You know what your problem is?" Sarah broke comfortable silence. "You plan everything else perfectly but leave no room for heart decisions." "Hearts aren't logical." Emma protested. "Thank goodness." Sarah laughed. "Otherwise we'd all miss the magic trying to schedule it." At the inn, Sarah hugged her friend tight. "Promise me something?" "What?" "Stop overthinking." Sarah pulled back, love in her eyes. "Some things deserve to unfold naturally." Emma ready for bed, Sarah's words echoing in her mind. The snow globe caught moonlight on her bedside table, two figures forever caught in perfect moment. Her phone buzzed - a message from Ryan: "Thank Sarah for the approval. See you tomorrow?" Emma smiled, typing response: "Bright and early. Someone has to keep you organized." "Some things never change." Ryan's reply came quick. "Thankfully." Emma set her phone aside, watching snow fall beyond her window. Below, market lights still gleamed while late-night vendors packed precious crafts. Sarah was right, Emma realized. Some things deserved natural unfolding. Some hearts needed freedom to find their way home. She touched the snow globe gently, remembering tree-light kisses and shared dreams. Tomorrow would bring new tasks and challenges. But tonight was for believing in second chances, bright as Christmas lights, warm as coming home. Emma slept soundly, dreaming of winter markets and possibility. Outside her window, snow continued falling on their magical small town, covering everything in fresh promise. Some friendships knew truth before we admitted it. Some loves waited patiently for hearts to catch up. And sometimes, under just the right lights, everything aligned into perfect moment. Emma carried that knowledge into dreams, certain as Sarah's wisdom, steady as Ryan's smile. Tomorrow would write new chapters, but tonight was for trusting that some stories deserved happy endings. Behind her, the snow globe kept quiet vigil, two figures forever sharing one perfect moment beneath twinkling lights. Ahead lay unwritten possibilities and unopened doors. But for now, there was only peaceful sleep and certainty. Some hearts found their way home naturally, guided by friendship's truth and love's patient light.
