Gabriel's Efforts

"I'm sorry but according to the lab results, your son has leukemia. He has to undergo medications and chemotherapy." the doctor explained.

Although she knew it would be one of the possibilities, she was never prepared to hear it. Her Enzo was so young for this cancer.

The doctor was long gone but she stood still. No words came out of her mouth. No tears. Just blank.

Looking at her like this, Gabriel felt as if his heart was squeezed. He was devastated that his son was sick yet he also felt bad about how Anna was suffering from the news. Surely, parents were the ones that hurt more when their child was sick, how much more cancer... Gabriel sighed with so much sadness.

A moment later, he stepped closer to Anna and called her.

She looked at him. Gabriel saw the tears in her eyes were about to fall. She was trembling. He hugged her tight while gently stroking her back. All her guards went down and she started to cry on his shoulder again.

"We have to be strong, Anna. Specially you. He needs you." he said. His voice was cracking that any moment his tears were about to fall too.

Although Gabriel is worrying like her, he chose to be strong and to comfort his ex-wife. Deep inside his heart, he was blaming himself. Maybe if he did not do that thing before, maybe Enzo wouldn't be sick or maybe even if he was sick, Anna won't be this devastated because she has a husband to rely on.

It hurts him seeing Anna in the arms of other man. But it was his fault. If only he can turn back time, he wouldn't dare to fall into the trap of his secretary. He would dote and cherish his wife more. But unfortunately, there was no such thing as going back. He can only face the consequences of his mistakes.

Although he was physically present this time, he was no longer the husband whom she could tell all her worries, share all her fears, or even depend on so many things.

Anna, after crying out all her emotions, gradually stopped crying. She felt they were in an awkward position. She used to hate this man to the core but now, this man was hugging her and comforting her.

She was about to speak when her phone rang. It was Matthew. She raised her head and looked at Gabriel. She excused herself and

went out of the room and answered the call.

She told him the bad news. She was sad but she didn't cry on the phone.

Matthew was also saddened by the news. He regretted not being with her during this time. As much as he wanted to be there for Anna during this difficult situation, he could not make it as he was needed in the company. There was an emergency on their production plant where he was needed urgently.

After their conversation, Anna returned to Enzo's room. She found Gabriel also on call. She didn't want to pry on his conversation. She busied herself searching online about leukemia. Although the doctor explained it to her, she wanted to know more about it.

"I was talking to my sister. She will be coming to visit Enzo." Gabriel said. "I also asked her to bring us some food for lunch."he added.

His sister loves Enzo so much. She also likes Anna even though they weren't together anymore.

Anna just nooded and slumped herself on the couch. Due to too much crying, stress, and lack of sleep, Anna fell asleep on the couch. Gabriel stared at her lovingly. He was tempted to caress her face but his hands were stopped halfway. He didn't want to disturb her sleep.

Half past one in the afternoon when Susie arrived. She brought toys and fruits for Enzo and a bag full of lunch.

Gabriel carefully placed the food on the table and put two plates. Susie brought a soup, some vegetables, and fish with sauce and white rice. After preparing the table, Gabriel gently tapped Anna's shoulder to wake her up.

Anna opened her eyes and saw Gabriel smiling at her. Although he was smiling, his eyes were sad.

"Let's eat, Anna. Susie brought us lunch." he pointed the table on the right.

"Uh, okay. Let me wash first." she got up and went to the washroom.

Gabriel looked at her retreating figure. In his eyes were longing and extreme sadness.

After they ate, Gabriel put the containers back inside the bag. Anna was looking at her son. Susie was giving him fruits to eat. Although she was looking at them, she didn't fail to notice Gabriel's movement. He never did it before when they were together. She was foing all the preparations for food and everything in the house.

Susie left later in the afternoon. After she left, there was an awkward silence inside the room. Enzo was asleep already.

Not.long after, Gabriel's phone rang. He oicked up the call immediately afraid of waking up his son. He glanced at Anna before answering the line.

It was his secretary.

"Sir, there is someone in the name of Mandy here, looking for you. I already informed her that you weren't coming vack but she said she will be waiting for you.

Gabriel's eyes went dark after hearing the name. His jaw tightened and clenced his fist.

"Throw her out. Call the security. Tell them not to let that woman in the building in the future." He said angrily. Did she forgot how she managed to ran away with his money? His anger rose in his heart. This woman... is evil!

Anna observed Gabriel as he paced back and forth. She overheard his conversation just now. The anger and hate inside her that was slowly thawed, rose.up.again. Her recollection of what happened three ago fueled her anger.

Yes, she has no right over who Gabriel was dating. But hate was the surname of Mandy in her heart!
