Chapter One
Willow looked at the pups, concerned, as all of them had been orphaned due to the constant attacks her Alpha was doing and the counterattacks that the other Alphas were retaliating with. She was spared from the fighting as her cooking skills were the best in the pack, and the Luna refused to do anything with the pups. Of course, Willow also wound up cleaning the pack house as the higher ranks declined to do any of the cleaning and cooking. She was grateful that she could use magic to grow food, so the pups were fed correctly, even if the only meat she could save for them was scraps. So she relied on growing plants that would provide the nourishment their bodies needed. She managed to stay out of the leadership’s way, as the way the males looked at her gave her the creeps. She was five feet five inches tall, with a slender figure, fair skin, vivid green eyes that seemed to glow, and dark brown hair that fell to her waist. She also had light-green, iridescent wings that sparkled in the sunlight, and her pointed ears complemented her delicate features. She wore loose-fitting clothing to conceal her figure and a wide-brimmed hat to shield her face. Though she still received leering looks from the leadership, none of them tried anything.
One night, after she tucked the pups into bed, a male tackled her from behind, put a hand over her mouth, and dragged her to her room. When he pinned her against the wall, she saw that he was six feet seven, with densely packed muscles, and that his eyes were glowing a bright blue, meaning his wolf was looking at her as well. “Please, I’m the only one who takes care of the orphans.” She would have said more, but he put a hand over her mouth, causing her to cry silently. “I don’t plan on hurting you, mate, though I guess I didn’t make the best first impression by grabbing you and pinning you against the wall. I do need you to explain some things to me, but first, it looks like you need some sleep. I promise my hands won’t roam all over you, but I won’t let you sleep unguarded with the way the leadership is. My name is Nick McKinsey, and my wolf’s name is Calthun. What’s yours, mate?” He asked her, nuzzling her where her collarbone met her neck, causing her to shiver involuntarily. “Willow Rosenthorn, and would you be the alpha of the pirate killer pack, Moonlit Waters?” She asked, unable to keep the fear out of her voice. “We do other stuff besides kill pirates, but yes, and it seems that gave me a bad boy image that seems to scare you.” He commented on the last part softly, “Well, I am worried about how the leadership will react to your presence. I can’t leave the pups, as no other adults will take care of them. I won’t say anything, don’t do anything that will endanger the pups.” Willow pleaded, pearls falling from her eyes as she cried, thinking about the pups. “Alpha, how about we evacuate the pups?” His beta suggested surprising them both. Willow inched closer to Nick, unsure of the new male in her room, and since Nick was her mate, she was sure he would protect her.
“Relax, this is my beta, Michael, Michael, this is my mate Willow.” Nick introduced Willow to his beta, who bowed to his Luna. “Don’t worry, Luna, most of us are orphans ourselves who were also wrongly expelled from our original packs. We’ll guard you and the pups with our lives.” He told Willow, thanking the Moon Goddess for sending his pack such a kind Luna. Already, he saw that Nick was softening up, though not so much as he would lose his edge, and no doubt having pups to protect would give every fighter in the pack a real reason to fight besides blowing off steam, since no one besides Nick now was mated. “Will there be any other adult females, or am I the only adult female in the pack?” Willow asked curiously, wondering how she was going to be the Luna of a bunch of rowdy fighters. “At the moment, you’re the only adult female, but I’m sure some of the guys might find their mates when we have your Luna ceremony,” Nick told her, feeling a little sheepish, but her warm smile put him at ease. “The leadership doesn’t pay attention to the pups, and the alpha took everyone on a vacation, as I would never abandon the pups, so he is probably expecting me to keep the territory intact. So, if you two can guarantee that the pups will be safe for tonight, then in the morning I can convince the pups that they’ll be safe with you.” Willow explained, making the two males smile. “Let me explain everything to my men first, then maybe you’ll let me just sleep next to you,” Nick said, the last part directed at his beta, who wisely kept his comments to himself. Once everyone was updated on the situation and Michael excused himself so he could guard the front door, Willow blushed as she went to change into her nightgown, as she was not quite ready to change in front of Nick. He smiled, understanding, guessing that he was going to be the first and only male she would ever have romantic relations with. He went to shower and get ready for bed himself, though he decided to tempt his sweet mate by sleeping without a shirt on.
After he exited the bathroom, Willow saw that he had curly red hair with a bit of a goatee and mustache, along with a decent amount of scars and a few tattoos. She blushed a deep red when she saw he wasn't wearing a shirt, but figured it was because he was a guy. He wrapped his arms around her, though when his bare skin touched her wings, her panties dampened a little bit, causing him to growl. “I gave you my word that I would not try anything before you were ready, and I won’t break that promise. I will say that you smell wonderful.” He whispered in her ear, causing her to giggle before she snuggled into his arms, falling deeply asleep. Nick kissed her on the forehead and fell asleep soon afterwards, happy that he now had his mate in his arms. The next morning, he woke up before her and admired the way the sun shone in her hair, highlighting her delicate facial features. He kissed her on the forehead, unable to hold back his affection. When she woke up, he could not resist giving her a light kiss on the lips, which would have deepened if a pup had not jumped onto the bed, crying that one of the new warriors scared her when she asked if the pack’s alpha was back. Willow soothed the pup and explained everything so she would understand what was going on. The pup snuggled up to Willow as she calmed down, while Nick was mind-linking his men, trying to find out what exactly happened.
Three male pups pounced on him in an attempt to protect Willow and the pup she had on her lap. “Brain, Jay, Issiac, and Michelle. This is my mate, Alpha Nick McKinsey. Nick, these are some of the pups I take care of.” Willow said, not bothering to hide her amusement at the sight of her mate being tackled by three boys. Willow, does that mean our old alpha is dead?” Michelle asked with her face still buried in Willow’s nightgown. “No, but Nick does want to move all of us to a safer place where his warriors can protect us better,” Willow explained, stroking the little girl’s hair.
