Greasy smell
Thea’s POV "Take this and get out of here, kiddo." Sam said as he slid a crisp manila envelope across the workbench. His face cracked into a proud smile. "Every cent you earned last month. Plus a little extra for keeping the shop running while my back was out." "Thanks, Sam.” I said as I wiped my grease-stained hands on a rag and took the envelope in my hand like it was a winning lottery ticket. My heart immediately did a strange flutter. I had finally done it. Today was payday, but it wasn't just any regular payday. I had been busting my ass at Sam’s motorcycle repair shop, saving every single penny, eating ramen noodles and working double shifts just to make this happen. I got into the University of California with straight A's. I was going to major in mechanical engineering. I was going to be a professional motorcycle racer. I was ready to give my future my all, my sweat, my heart, take the big plunge. I felt I was ready. I pulled out my phone and quickly texted Felix, my boyfriend. Got the tuition money! Let's celebrate tomorrow. Love you. I slipped the phone into my back pocket and started the walk back to Clara’s place. Honestly, I didn’t want to go back there. I loved Clara more than anything. She was my absolute best friend in the world. When I got kicked out from my apartment a few months ago because I couldn't pay rent, she didn't hesitate to take me in. We were both starting at the same college and she had been my rock. Her twin sister, Stella, on the other hand? She was a nightmare. Stella made it entirely clear that I was an unwelcome stray. She hated sharing space, hated that Clara helped me and honestly, she just seemed to hate me existing. I kept reminding myself it was temporary. Two more weeks, and I would be moving into the campus dorms. I just had to keep my head down. I checked my phone again as I turned down Clara's street. No reply. Felix’s chat thread was still dead. What was he doing? He usually texted back instantly. I assumed he might just be asleep, or maybe playing video games with his frat buddies. I would just call him the next day. The house was quiet when I slipped through the front door. Clara was out, probably working her own shift. I kicked off my boots and padded down the hallway in my socks, eager to take a hot shower and wash the day's grime away. But as I walked past Stella's room, I heard a noise The door wasn’t fully closed. I moved silently to the door and waited outside, just for a second, puzzled as to what that wet, slapping sound was. I didn't mean to look. I really didn't. But my curiosity got the better of me, and I peered through the crack in the doorframe. My heart stopped beating for a while. Felix was sitting on Stella’s messy bed, his head thrown back against the wall. And there was Stella, on her knees right between his legs, performing oral s*x on my boyfriend. MY BOYFRIEND. I stood in that hallway, listening to the sickening sounds of my best friend's sister sucking off the guy who had been telling me he loved me just yesterday. My stomach churned at that thought. How could he do that to me? Felix tangled his fingers in Stella’s hair, letting out a low, breathy groan. "God, you are way better than my girlfriend.” He strokes Stella's face as she pulled back for a second to breathe. "I am so tired of her. I am so tired of her greasy smell." Greasy smell? The words felt like a whip hitting my chest. I smelled like grease because I was working my fingers to the bone to survive. I smelled like grease because I didn't have parents to pay my way through life. I didn't even feel sad now. I felt searing, blinding rage. A thousand ugly possibilities flashed through my mind. Had they been doing this for long? What if I hadn't come home early? Did they plan to continue doing it behind my back? And Stella? I wouldn't put it past her to do such a thing. She had done terrible things to Clara before and I guess Felix was just as vulnerable to her advances as any other weak-minded fool. I didn't wait in the hallway anymore. I didn't hide. I shoved the door open so hard it slammed violently against the wall. "What the hell is going on here?!" I yelled with unadulterated rage. Felix's eyes practically bugged out of his skull. “Thea!!” Without wasting another moment, he forcefully shoved Stella away from him, sending her sprawling back onto the carpet as he scrambled to pull his pants up. Stella, on the other hand, didn't even look guilty. She just sat there on the floor, wiping her mouth with the back of her hand with a smug, satisfied smirk playing on her lips. He looked at Stella, then at me. Panic flashed across his features. "She seduced me!" He cried out, pointing a shaking finger at Stella as he struggled with his zipper. "I swear, Thea, she came onto me! I didn't want this!" I stared at the pathetic, cowardly boy I had wasted my time on. "You are despicable.” I spat with disgust. "You would sleep with absolutely anyone. You have no fear of consequences, do you? You are just a weak, cheating scumbag." "Oh, come on!" Felix puffed his chest out, trying to somehow make this my fault. “What do you expect, Thea?” The guilt on his face instantly altered into defensive anger. "I have been pursuing you since high school, Thea! I have been the perfect boyfriend. But you never wanted to have s*x with me! A guy has needs. You are always at that stupid shop or studying. I couldn't resist other women when you wouldn't even give me the time of day!" He was actually blaming me. He was blaming me for not giving him my body so he felt entitled to take it from my best friend's sister. I didn't waste any more time on him. I stepped fully into the room, closed the distance between us and swung my arm with all the strength I had built up hauling engine blocks at the shop. Smack. The sound of the slap echoed loudly in the small bedroom. My palm stung but watching his head snap to the side was worth every bit of it. Felix stumbled back and gripped his bright red cheek in utter shock. “We are done." I whispered coldly. Then I turned around and marched right out of the room. I didn't look at Stella again. I didn't give her the satisfaction of acknowledging her little victory. She could have him. They deserved each other.
