CHAPTER ONE "Sign it." My mother slides the paper across the table without looking at me. I look at her hands first — the way they tremble slightly, the way she pulls them back too fast, like the paper burns. Then I look at the document. I don't understand all the legal words. I'm not supposed to. I'm seventeen and I've spent the last six months watching my mother quietly fall apart, and I've learned not to ask too many questions because the answers are always worse than the silence. "You sold me to an Alpha I've never met." She finally looks at me then, and I wish she hadn't. Because I can see it in her eyes — she knows exactly what she's doing. She's not confused. She doesn't answer. She picks up the pen and sets it down in front of me. My hand moves before I decide it to. I sign. I don't know why. Maybe because I'm tired. She looks at me for one extra second, like she's trying to decide if I'll cause problems. I give her nothing to read. I've had years of practice. She shows me to a room — small, plain, but mine. A bed. A window. A lock on the door that I check three times before I sit down on the mattress. I sit there until the light through the window changes from afternoon to evening, and then I lie down with my coat still on, and I look at the ceiling, and I think: this is what the rest of my life is. I could back away. I almost do. But then he looks up. And our eyes meet. I feel it the same second he does. For three seconds, we just look at each other. And then his face closes. I watch it happen — watch something move across his expression and then get locked down hard, the way you'd shut a window before a storm. He looks away first. "You're the new service transfer," he says. "Yes, Alpha." "Greta will give you your assignments." "She already did." A pause. He looks at me again, briefly. "Then we have nothing to discuss." He walks away. I stand in the hallway for a long moment after he's gone, the tray still in my hands, and I think: he felt it. He felt the same thing I did. And he just — walked away. I should feel nothing. I don't even know this man. But standing there in that cold hallway, I feel the specific quiet of something beginning — and I'm not sure yet if it's hope or a warning. Three hours later, I find out. It's the quarterly reflection — a pack tradition I didn't know about, where senior wolves gather in the main hall and acknowledge spiritual bonds. I'm not supposed to be there. I'm passing through to reach the kitchen stairs. But the door is open. And Damien Cross is standing at the center of the room with his Beta circle around him, and the moment I appear in the doorway, his eyes find me again like they've been waiting. I feel the pull harder this time. My amber eyes — the ones I've been ashamed of my whole life because they're different — heat up. I can feel them shifting. One of the Betas leans toward Damien and murmurs something. Damien looks at me for one long, still moment. Then he says, clearly, calmly, loud enough for every person in the room to hear: "She is not this pack's concern. There is no bond here to acknowledge. I reject it." The room goes quiet. I don't move. I don't make a sound. I find something on the far wall to look at and I focus on it and I breathe. He rejected me. In front of everyone. Before he even knew my name. I nod once — because I will not let them see me break — and I walk the rest of the way through the hallway and down the kitchen stairs, and I set the tray down on the counter very carefully, and I stand there with my hands flat on the cold tile, and I breathe. In. Out. In. Out. This is not new. Being thrown away. Being told you don't count. I know how to survive this. I've been surviving it my whole life.
