Chapter 1: The Betrayal
Tawny’s POV The moonlit clearing was filled with anticipation as the wolves of the Nightshade Pack gathered together. Tonight will be the happiest day of my life—the day I will finally meet my destined mate, the one chosen by the Moon Goddess herself. The air crackled with excitement, and my heart fluttered with a mix of nerves and hope. Other mature wolves had danced on the fields. Females finding their mate and purring off to complete the bond. It was finally my turn. I stood at the edge of the clearing, my eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of my mate. My nose twitched for any faint smell that brought pleasure. The moon's gentle glow illuminated the faces of my pack members, their expressions a mix of curiosity and joy. They knew what this day meant to me, and their support bolstered my spirits. A soft breeze rustled through the trees, carrying with it the scent of anticipation and the promise of love. I couldn't help but feel a surge of excitement coursing through my veins. It had been ingrained in us since birth that our mates were chosen by the Moon Goddess, destined to be our perfect match. I had dreamed of this day, of meeting the one who would complete me. As the pack members settled into their places, a sense of unity washed over the clearing. We were a family, bound by more than just blood. The pack was our home, and finding our mates meant extending that sense of belonging to another. A hush fell over the crowd as a figure emerged from the shadows. It was him, the one I had been waiting for all my life. His sleek silver hair glistened under the moon's radiance. I could hardly contain my excitement. My wolf growled in approval, sending a brief ache through my skull. As he made his way towards me in nothing more than laced shorts, my heart skipped a beat. This was it—the moment that would change my life forever. The pack held their breath, their eyes fixed on us. The pack murmured in admiration as he made his way towards me, his steps confident and deliberate. Every eye was on us, waiting for the fateful moment when our lips would touch, when the bond between us would be sealed. Time seemed to slow as he approached. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself, and met his gaze. For a moment, everything around us faded into the background. It was just the two of us, locked in an unspoken connection. His blue eyes held a magnetic intensity with flecks of gold and I could see the hope and desire in his eyes, mirroring my own. But as he reached me, his eyes flickered with something I couldn't quite decipher. Doubt? Regret? My excitement turned into a knot of unease in my stomach. He hesitated, his gaze drifting to the side, and then he spoke words that shattered my world. "I'm sorry," he said, his voice laced with sadness. "You're not good enough for me." The words hung in the air, heavy with the weight of betrayal. Gasps echoed through the clearing, and I felt the stares of my pack burning into me. Tears welled up in my eyes, threatening to spill over, but I held them back. I refused to let them see my pain. "Wh-what do you mean?" I managed to stammer, my voice trembling. He avoided my gaze, his words cutting deeper. "I've found someone else. Someone who is more fitting for me, more powerful. You were never meant to be my mate." Shock coursed through my veins, followed by an overwhelming sense of hurt. How could he say such things? The Moon Goddess had chosen us to be mates. It was supposed to be a bond forged by destiny. My mind reeled, desperately searching for an explanation, a way to make sense of this betrayal. “This is destined. You can’t just ignore it.” My voice came out firmer than I thought it would be. It took everything in me not to yell, to stomp my feet in the mud and scathe at him. Everyone here would take it as unseeming behavior for a Chosen but I wasn’t sure I cared at this point. My mind was rearing, going through different possibilities. Wondering why he would reject me. Humiliate me. The pack watched in stunned silence, their eyes filled with a mix of pity and curiosity. I tried to catch his eyes but he refused to look me in the eye. I wondered if I could use my gifts. It was a naughty thought. Yes. But I would have answers. I ignored my wolf screaming in my head, reminding of the warnings from the Elders. I knew. It’s not like anyone here would be able to tell if I used my gifts on my mate or not. Even if they could, it didn’t matter. I opened myself. The air left my lungs in a whoosh. The taste on my tongue tangy with shame. He met my gaze then and I felt my knees turn to liquid. He knew what I had done. Worse still, he had been prepared. The tanginess on my tongue was shifting to a bitter, lucid taste. He blocked me. The barrier around his mind so strong, it snuffed my abilities before they could cox him. “Just look at it. I always knew it was strange!” I didn’t recognize who had spoken from the crowd but it. The person referred to me as it. It was clear not everyone stood with me. Not everyone supported me. It felt as if the entire world had turned against me at that moment. With a heavy heart, I turned and ran, the sound of their whispers and murmurs fading into the distance. The betrayal cut deep, leaving wounds, deep wounds that made my chest ache. I couldn't bear to face them, not now. As I ran through the moonlit forest, tears streamed down my face, mingling with the scent of pine and damp earth. The pain in my chest was almost suffocating, and I had to fight to keep moving, to keep the darkness at bay. But amidst the pain, a spark of determination ignited within me. I refused to let this betrayal define me. I would prove to myself and to the pack that I was strong. It was rare for a Chosen to be rejected but it’s not like I found a way to be rejected. With each step, my resolve grew stronger. I would not return. I would find a way to heal my broken soul and find happiness again. I wasn’t sure if I still believed there was someone out there who would guard my heart and love me for who I truly was. What I truly was. Cursing out loud, I vowed to embark on a new path—one that would lead me to my own destiny, independent of the mate who had betrayed me. I imagined the Elders would have turned ashen if they heard the words I spewed from my mouth. As I ventured deeper into the forest, I began to slow down. Was I even sure about leaving? Where would I go? It seemed like a decision driven by logic some seconds ago but with my emotions settling, I wasn’t so sure. A conflict was beginning to brew and I paused. Not sure in which direction I could turn. Does it matter? Who would care? As much as it seemed weak, these thoughts ravaged me. Maybe I could roam about. If the luck of the Moon Goddess still shined on me, perhaps my life would be cut short. Shoulders slumping, it felt like the decision had been made. Pushing my hands down my face, I trudged forward, feeling the weight of the world crashing down on me. It seemed like there was no escape from the pain that consumed my heart. But just as I reached the edge of despair, a chilling sensation slithered across my neck, causing my breath to catch in my throat. A surge of fear shot through me, and I slowly turned, my heart pounding in my chest. The moon's pale light illuminated the figure standing before me. My eyes widened in disbelief as I met the gaze of the one who held me captive. The sinister glint in their eyes sent a chill down my spine, and I could sense the darkness that radiated from their very being. Dread washed over me, and a sinking feeling settled in the pit of my stomach. "Oh no," I whispered, my voice barely audible in the still night air. A sense of impending doom loomed, threatening to consume me whole. Well, hadn’t I wished for death?
