What a Crappy Start

958 Words
Ava's POV   The canteen is as expected small tables are scattered around, with a queue of students lining up at the side of the room, picking what they want from the buffet. Two serving women stand behind the food, refilling items when they get low. Grace and I Both grab a tray each and began load up our plates. We both decide on a bacon sandwich and a fruit bowl, with a big mug of coffee.   We make our way to an empty table way at the back. Everyone is staring at us as if we have grown two heads! Causing my anxiety to go through the roof. Finally sitting down, we begin eating when a tray is placed next to mine. I look up to fine River or Cole I couldn’t tell the difference. He must have noticed my confusion “River” he says as he points to himself.   “Oh, hello what are you doing over here?” I ask as I pick up my sandwich and take a bite.    “I want to sit with you. I said I would see you around, didn’t I?” he then winks at me, causing me to nearly chock on my sandwich. Grace clears her throat and gives me the look that says she wants to be introduced; I roll my eyes.    “River this is my best friend, Grace.” She sticks her hand out and he shakes it.    “Grace this is River he helped me find my room yesterday.” I say before I take a big sip from my coffee mug the warm liquid gold doing its job making me feel more alive than I did a few moments before.    She gives me a crazed smile. “Oh, really how nice of him” I roll my eyes again she better not start. I will kill her if she embarrasses me Infront of this man god.   We eat the rest of breakfast in silence until river speaks up.    “Heard you had a run in with Bethany this morning, first day and already making friends aye.” He says trying to make conversation but It immediately brings back the anger I had when having the confrontation this morning.    “So that’s the b***h’s name, nice to know” I snap annoyed that news of our run in with the head b***h has already got out.    “Just stay away from her she’s bad news, and you don’t want to get on her bad side.” He says back clearly noting he made a bad decision to bring it up.    I choke out a laugh shooting up to my feet I lean down towards River I look him dead in the beautiful eyes.    “No! I’m the one who’s bad side she doesn’t want to get on. I may be a princess but do not think for a second, that it means I’m helpless. My dad has trained me to fight since I was five. And her going after Grace BIG mistake! Next time I will rip her throat out and you make sure she knows that.” I say my voice a deadly whisper as I make sure to get my point across that I will not take any s**t.   River looks at me with awe on his face “She will, Ava has a pretty face, but she’s a psychopath.” Grace laughs out, giving her a cheesy smile, a bell goes off to signify the end of breakfast.    “What class do you two phyco’s have first,” River asks with a grin on his face.   “Spellcasting,” we both say, I look to Grace and wink. At least we will be together.    “Great I will walk you as I’m in the same tower, I have advance spell casting.” He says happily.    I can’t help but feel like this River was trying too hard we had only just met after all, plus I wasn’t here to make friends I take in a breath. I need to let River down but in the nicest way I can I don’t want to offend him seen as he has been nothing but nice to me since I arrived here.   “Look River you seem like a nice guy, but we want to do this on our own if you don’t mind.” I say unsure of how he would respond.   I see the disappointment on his face before he has time to quickly mask it “uh… yeah sure that’s fine see you around then” he says.   He quickly turns to leave, and I feel bad, but I didn’t want to get into anything right now I have Grace she is all the friends I need.   Linking her arm through mine we set off to find our class. “He is gorgeous, and I think he likes you. He kept stealing little glances when you’re not looking. Then when you gave that little speech about ripping Bethany’s throat out, he looked about ready to propose.”    She whispers. I roll my eyes here we go again Grace thinks everyone who so much as speaks to me wants to date me, which is so far from the truth. I don’t know what it is, but she seems to always be trying to match me with someone.    “I don’t even know him, and I’m not here to be in a relationship” I whisper back hoping she receives the message loud and clear.   Even though there is definitely something about River that calls to me but right now I’m not willing to think too much about it.   Yes, he is extremely attractive, but I didn’t need the complications of a boyfriend.
