Episode1:The Rogue That Bowed
The first time Lyra Vale saw a rogue kneel, she thought she was going to die.
Everyone in Veyrith knew what rogues were. They were wolves who had lost their minds, creatures driven by bloodlust and instinct. They attacked without warning, killed without mercy, and showed no loyalty to anyone.
At least, that was what the kingdom taught its children.
Lyra had never questioned the stories.
Not until the morning she found one bleeding beneath an old oak tree.
She had gone into the forest to gather herbs for Mira, whose fever had refused to disappear for three days. The settlement's healer had run out of medicine, leaving Lyra with one choice: venture beyond the safe paths and search for moonroot.
It was a foolish decision.
But Mira was the closest thing Lyra had to family.
"Just moonroot and straight back," she whispered to herself, pushing through a wall of thorny branches.
The forest was unusually quiet.
No birds sang above her. No insects buzzed in the grass. Even the wind seemed to have disappeared.
Then she heard it.
A low, painful growl.
Lyra froze.
Her fingers tightened around the small hunting knife at her waist.
"Who's there?"
Something moved behind the oak tree.
She stepped backwards.
A massive black wolf emerged from the shadows.
Its fur was tangled with dirt, and blood stained its front leg. One of its yellow eyes was swollen, while the other remained fixed on her.
Lyra's stomach dropped.
A rogue.
She had heard enough stories to know what happened next. The creature would attack, and she would become another name whispered around the settlement's evening fires.
"Stay back," she warned.
The wolf did not move.
Instead, it lowered its head slightly.
Lyra blinked.
Was it preparing to attack?
She raised her knife, although her trembling hand made the weapon almost useless.
"Don't come any closer."
The wolf took one step forward.
Then another.
Its movements were slow, almost uncertain. It wasn't looking at her like a predator looking at prey.
It was looking at her as though it recognized something.
A strange pressure formed behind Lyra's eyes.
She heard a voice.
Not with her ears.
Inside her head.
Please.
Lyra gasped and nearly dropped her knife.
The wolf lowered itself onto the forest floor. Its injured leg trembled as it struggled to remain upright.
She stared at it.
"No. No, that's impossible."
Rogues couldn't speak. They couldn't reason. They were supposed to be empty creatures controlled by instinct.
Yet the voice came again.
Please. Help me.
"Can you understand me?"
The wolf slowly blinked.
Her heart began to pound.
She should run. She should return to the settlement and report what she had found.
But the creature was bleeding.
And something about its eyes made her think it was afraid.
Lyra crouched carefully, keeping the knife within reach.
"Let me see your leg."
The wolf flinched when she touched its fur, but it didn't bite. She examined the wound and found a narrow silver arrowhead buried beneath the skin.
"Who did this to you?"
A growl rumbled through its chest.
This time, the voice was clearer.
Hunters.
Lyra looked over her shoulder.
The royal hunters.
They had been searching the outer forests for weeks, bringing back trophies and stories of victories against the creatures they called monsters.
She had never liked them.
But she had never imagined they would leave an injured animal to die.
"Hold still," she whispered.
She pulled the arrowhead free.
The wolf cried out, and Lyra almost lost her balance. She quickly pressed a strip of cloth against the wound.
"You're going to be fine."
The creature lifted its head.
For a moment, their eyes met.
Then something happened that made the entire forest seem to stop breathing.
The wolf bowed.
Not lowered its head.
Not crouched.
It bowed.
Its massive body pressed against the earth, its forehead resting between its front paws.
Lyra stared at it.
"What are you doing?"
The wolf didn't answer.
A sudden warmth spread across her palm. It travelled up her arm, settling somewhere deep inside her chest.
Then she heard something else.
A distant howl.
Another followed.
And another.
The sounds came from every direction, growing louder until the forest seemed filled with invisible voices.
Lyra stood slowly.
"What's happening?"
The black wolf raised its head.
They hear you.
"Who?"
The others.
Before Lyra could ask another question, shapes began appearing between the trees.
One wolf.
Then three.
Then ten.
Some were grey, others brown or almost white. Their bodies were covered in scars, and several limped as they approached.
Lyra backed away.
There were too many.
She was surrounded.
Her fingers found the handle of her knife again.
"Stay where you are!"
The wolves continued approaching.
Fear rushed through her so quickly that she almost couldn't breathe.
Then the black wolf beside her stood.
It moved in front of her, placing itself between Lyra and the others.
A strange silence followed.
Every wolf stopped.
Their heads lowered.
One by one, they bowed.
Lyra's knife slipped from her fingers and landed in the grass.
She couldn't understand what she was seeing.
These creatures were supposed to be uncontrollable. The royal soldiers used entire hunting parties to drive them away.
Yet here they were, waiting for her.
Not attacking.
Not threatening.
Waiting.
A voice rose from somewhere beyond the trees.
"Lyra!"
She turned.
Mira came running through the bushes, carrying a small basket. Her expression changed when she saw the wolves.
"Oh, moon above!"
She dropped the basket.
"Lyra, RUN!"
Mira grabbed her arm, but Lyra couldn't move.
The wolves had begun to grow restless.
"What's wrong with you?" Mira shouted. "Those are rogues!"
"I know!"
"Then why are you standing there?"
Lyra opened her mouth, but no explanation came.
A sharp whistle cut through the forest.
The wolves immediately turned towards the sound.
From the eastern path, several riders appeared. They wore dark armour marked with the silver crest of the royal hunters.
At their head rode a tall man with pale eyes and a scar running along his jaw.
He dismounted without taking his eyes off Lyra.
"Step away from the creatures," he ordered.
Lyra recognized the uniform.
Royal Rogue Hunters.
Mira moved behind her.
The commander approached, his hand resting on his sword.
"My name is Captain Kael Draven. By order of King Darius, all rogues within this territory are to be eliminated."
His gaze moved across the kneeling wolves.
Then it returned to Lyra.
"Now tell me," he said quietly, "why are they bowing to you?"
Lyra said nothing.
Kael drew his sword.
"Answer me."
The black wolf growled.
Every other rogue lifted its head.
Lyra felt that strange warmth return to her chest. The voices were back, hundreds of them, pressing against her thoughts.
She didn't know what she was.
She didn't know why the wolves obeyed her.
But she knew one thing.
She wasn't going to let these hunters kill them.
"Put your sword away," she said.
Kael's expression hardened.
"Excuse me?"
Lyra took a breath.
"Leave them alone."
For a moment, nobody moved.
Then Kael raised his hand, signalling his soldiers to prepare their weapons.
The wolves began to stand.
Lyra felt their anger, their fear, and their pain as though it belonged to her.
Without understanding why, she lifted her own hand.
"Stop."
The command left her lips softly.
But the forest answered.
Every rogue dropped to the ground.
Even the black wolf lowered its head.
The hunters stared in disbelief.
Kael's sword remained halfway out of its sheath.
And somewhere far beyond the forest, inside the royal palace, a warning bell began to ring.
King Darius had just received news that the im
possible had happened.
Someone had awakened the blood of the First Wolves.
And he intended to make sure that person never lived long enough to discover what she truly was.
