I woke up in my bed. ‘Thank you, Matt.’ I thanked him for bringing me in my room. On my nightstand I saw a note. I picked and read it seeing it’s from Matt.
Dear sis
I saw our mother’s car in front of the house so I decided to move to the motel close by. I’ll see you after you finish school.
Your big annoying brother
Relationship between my brother and our mother wasn’t the best especially since she got together with my dad. And I understand him. Even I don’t have the best relationship with her or my dad. They’re into work too much to have no time for me or Matt.
And let’s not forget that my dad never wanted a child either. So, he never gave me a fatherly love. Mom was acting like a mother until I went to school after that she thought that I was old enough to not need her anymore.
P.S. don’t forget you’re supposed to go to school with Jay. Have fun!
Oh yeah. Jay.
Maybe he’s sick and won’t be able to come and pick me up and drive me to school.
Crossing my fingers that I won’t have to go to school with him I went to take a cold shower to wake me up.
Stepping out of the shower I brushed my teeth and put my hair in a high ponytail. I put my glasses on too because I don’t feel like putting contacts in my eyes.
Stepping out of the bathroom I went in my walk-in closet. Looking at my phone to check the weather I saw it’s going to be a little hotter than yesterday so I put on black sundress that has spaghetti straps and a low v-cut but it’s still covering everything that is supposed to and it ends just above my knees. I put on my black sandals too and took the necklace with my Scorpio sign that Matt bought me the last time I visited him in Boston.
Walking down the stairs I walked in the kitchen I saw mom making breakfast.
“Morning.” She didn’t respond to me so either she didn’t hear me or she can’t answer.
I sit down on the stool beside the kitchen island and waited for her to acknowledge me. She doesn’t want to get my dad upset by talking with me too much so she ignores me most of the time especially when he’s around.
I waited for solid 10 minutes when I heard someone knock on the door.
“Rebecca go and open the door.” So, she does know I’m here.
Walking to the door I heard dad coming to the kitchen and mom started talking with him. Opening the door, I saw it was Jay.
“Hey” he nodded his head without looking at me. What the hell is wrong with the world. Yesterday was let’s hate Rebecca and today is let’s ignore her?
“Come in. You hungry?”
I stepped aside to let him in.
“Already ate.”
He walked past me and I led him into the kitchen.
Mom and dad quickly put their attention on the new comer and then looked at me.
“Rebecca who is this boy?” my dad asks. Usually when a father asks their daughter who the boy is it’s because they think she’s too good for him but not my dad. He asked because he was disturbed in the middle of his breakfast.
He raised his eyebrow at me because I was taking too long to answer.
“Mom dad this is Jay. Our new neighbor. Jay this are my parents Christopher and Linda. He is here because he’s my ride to school.”
With that they just smiled at him and get back to their breakfast.
“Um…wait here I’m just going to go get my bag and then we can leave.” I left him with my parents to go in my room. I checked myself in my mirror one more time before going back down.
Coming back down I saw Jay getting bored while my parents were ignoring him. I took an apple to eat because I was a little hungry and just when I was about the exit the kitchen with Jay behind me when dad’s voice stopped me.
“Wouldn’t you rather leave that apple here so you want get fatter than you already are?”
Fatter? Is he kidding me? I’m thin. Too thin. Because of what I’ve been through I’ve been too thin. The doctor always tells me to eat more if I don’t want to get sick.
“Well, I’m hungry so I’m going to eat it.” After that I grabbed Jay and pulled him out of there.
Once we were outside, he pulled his hand away and went to his car with me following him.
While we were driving to school, we didn’t say anything and I started eating my apple.
Once we came to school everyone was staring at us. Well staring at him and glaring at me. After closing the car door, we both went separate ways ignoring each other. But our ignoring didn’t last long considering we shared the first class. Going in the classroom I went to sit beside Sam (Ella’s boyfriend).
“Where’s Ella?” Sam asked me while I was getting ready for my first class of the day.
“What do you mean? Isn’t she here yet?” he looked at me like some weirdo.
“No. You two were supposed to come together to school.”
Shit. s**t. s**t. I forgot to tell Ella about the change of plans. Thankfully I saw her coming in class a minute before it rang so she wasn’t late for class.
“What the hell Bec? You left waiting for you? And then I come in school and found out through the rumors that you came to school with the new guy? Without telling me?”
“I’m sorry. I forgot. A lot happened yesterday and, in the morning, and it slipped my mind. Please forgive me?” I gave her my best puppy dog eyes knowing she can’t stay mad at me forever.
“Fine. But you owe me.”
After that the teacher came in class.
“Good morning students. This is history class and everything will be the same as last year. The exams will be unexpected so you better study hard. But for today I will be putting you in pairs and you will have an assignment that will be due next week when you will have to give me your papers. The assignment will be comparison between now and the past. Like for example you will have to compare Victorian era and the present. But not all of you will get the same time period. So, the pairs are …” the teacher went on with telling the pairs until it was just me, Ella, Sam and Jay left.
“Sam and Ella. And Jay and Rebecca.” Please no.
But apparently the luck was not on my side. So, I had to get up and move towards him so we could work on the project.
The teacher came toward us and gave us the time period which was antiquity. Great. After working for the rest of the class I released that we didn’t do much considering that we argued most of the time. The teacher was sending us glares but I guess even though she saw we don’t really get along she wouldn’t pair us with someone else. We agreed to meet up tomorrow after school in the library to work on the representation. After that we ignored each other for the rest of the day until it was time for him to take me home.
And guess what. The ride home was silent. And even after we came home, we just went our separate ways without saying a word.
