It was around 2pm when I came home. Entering my room, I saw my dear brother Matthew on my bed sleeping. Matthew is my 10 years older half-brother on my mom’s side. She was very young when she got pregnant with him and her boyfriend from then decided to leave her because he didn’t want children claiming they were too young (which was true my mom was only 19 when she got pregnant and 20 when she gave birth but the i***t still shouldn’t leave her). Deciding that I’ll be a good sister today I just laid beside him and fell asleep. Something I really needed after last night. I woke up some time later and what was supposed to be an hour-long nap turned into a 4 hours long sleep. Coming downstairs I saw Matthew starting to cook. “What are you doing big bro?” he looked at me and smiled at me reminding me that I haven’t seen him in forever and that he will not stay long and then I won’t see him for little while longer. And even though we don’t see each other much considering that he lives in Boston and I live in North Carolina in a small town named Bryson City. “Cooking. Isn’t it obvious?” “Yeah, but for who? Are we getting visitors? Do I finally get to meet your girlfriend?” “Yes and no.” that was all he said while he kept on cooking. So, I guess that we are getting visitors but it’s not his girlfriend. One time when he was still in high school, I asked him why I can’t meet any of his girlfriends and he replayed that why would he introduce her to them when they wouldn’t last. And even one time he broke up with his girlfriend because she wanted to meet his family but he didn’t want to (well to be honest she broke up with him). “Fine don’t tell me who’s coming. What are you cooking there anyway?” “Nothing much. I only had one hour to prepare dinner so pasta with Bolognese sauce. You better get ready because they’ll come any minute. But to tell you who’s coming is the new neighbors. They have a son that’s actually the same age as you and is going to the same school. Maybe you already met him.” “Yeah maybe. Well, I’m going to get ready.” Stepping in my room I closed the door and went to my walk-in closet to decide on something appropriate to wear for the dinner. After I decoded on what to wear which were black jeans and grey shirt with a hole where my elbows are, with my hair still in ponytail I took a quick shower before dressing. Stepping outside I could hear faint voices which meant that they’re already here. I forgot on my shoes but I didn’t feel like going back in my room to put them on so I stayed in black socks. Coming in the living room I released that indeed I knew the new neighbor. It was blondie the new guy from school that I was staring at before Ella and the teacher interrupted me. Again, I couldn't look away from him. It was my dear brother that broke my trance. "Becca you finally came. This are the new neighbors. Ophelia Johnson, her husband Dorian and their son Jay This is my sister Rebecca." "Hi." was all I could say. Ophelia stood up and walked to me to, hug me which took me by surprise and for a moment I froze and then hugged her back. "You look so pretty. Oh my gosh you're so thin did your brother ever gave you anything to eat" She joked. The comment about me being thin affected me but I didn't let it show. She is really nice and caring. Something my mother never was. "Mom!" This was Jay. Apparently, he was impressed at his mother reaction. They looked at each other and it was like they have a conversation through their eyes. Dorian Jay's dad noticed this and wanted to engage Matthew and me in a conversation. "So, Matthew, Rebecca where are your parents?" Sorry sir but you aren't meeting them for a long time. "They are on a busines trip actually. And they are not returning for a while. So, you'll have to wait if you want to meet them." Matthew answered. "Come on sis sit down don't stand like that." And when he told me that I realized that I could actually sit instead of stand. So, I took a seat next to Matt and opposite of Jay who was glaring at me. Again. I mean dude what is your problem?! I wanted to ask him that but I couldn't not in front of everyone. "So, Jay Rebecca is this your first-time meeting or have you met in school today?" Did his father really had to ask that?  And just when I was about to lie and say no Jay beat me to it. "Yes actually. But only for a minute after she came in class late and then left with her friend. I really hope your friend is okay cause that was one nasty bite." This time it was my turn to glare at him and he just smirked back. "Becca what did he mean-"  "Nothing." I cut him off. Not really wanting to talk about that now. After a little small talk, we decided to eat. Matt asked me for my help in the kitchen so I went with him to get the dinner and help him bring it to the diner.   "I don't like how he's looking at you." was the first thing he said after we were out of earshot. "And were you really late for school? And then you skipped it? On the first day?" "Look it's a long story can we not talk about this now?"  "Fine. But when they leave. You and I are gonna talk." I nodded my head took the food and brought it to the dining room. The... family was quiet sitting behind the table. Leaving only two places free. One of them was on the head of the table where Matt's going to sit and the other one was next to Jay. Where I'm gonna sit. Couldn't be happier (note the sarcasm). "All right let's start eating, shall we?" Matt said once he joined us. There was a weird tension between Jay and I that could be sensed on a mile away if you ask me. But of course, nobody commented on it the entire dinner. I found out that Jay's family actually owns Snow moon hotels all over the world and that this is the first time that they moved because they are thinking of opening a hotel in North Carolina and some political stuff was mentioned.  They have 10 hotels at the moment where 6 of them were in Europe, 2 in America, 1 in Asia and 1 in Australia. Damn they have money. Mom will definitely like them.  At some point after we finished dinner there was a doorbell and Matthew went to open the door. Great. I was alone with blondie (who clearly hates me) and his parents. When I looked at the clock, I saw that Matt didn’t return for 5 minutes already. What was he doing? And of course, the new family decided to take the opportunity to talk. “So, Rebecca. How is your friend? After that nasty dog bite.” How did he know? Oh yeah right. Jay decided to tell everybody about my absence. “She’s great. The nurse told her to go and see a doctor in case the dog was rabbit.” I told them. But they didn’t seem convinced. I wonder why that is. Beside me I heard Jay mutter “Like that would help.” It was barley a whisper. I almost thought that I imagined it but Dorian’s glare towards Jay confirmed that I indeed heard something. “I’m sorry Jay. Did you say something?” I couldn’t help but ask. Jas looked startled at my question. Yes, blondie I heard you. “Nothing.” With that he started glaring at me again. God, I want to ask him what his problem is with me. After that Matt came back frustrated. “It was just a person who came to the wrong door. I hope you enjoyed the dinner.” “Yes of course we did. Too bad bud my wife and I have to go. But Jay would love to help and clean. Right Jay?” “Oh no. He doesn’t have to. You can all go home. Becca and I can clean up ourselves.” “If you insist. But to express our thank you for the dinner why doesn’t Rebecca tomorrow go to school with Jay? We are neighbors after all.” Oh no. Do I really have too? I looked at Matt hoping he would get the clue that I don’t want that. “Of course. Why not.” After that we said our goodbyes and they left and Matt and I cleaned up and decided to watch movies and sometime in the middle of some movies I fell asleep.
