Chapter 6 My dad is still out when I pop the window to my room and slip out into the goddamned lavender bush, which all but attacks me with its branches and its pungent flowers. For like five years I’ve been trying to convince mum to dig it up but she really likes it, even though it makes me want to hang myself. It’s still warm out even though it’s after midnight and there are heaps of bugs flapping about the place in their aimless way. I crouch in the grass by the bush for a good thirty seconds just listening. The last thing I need is for mum to have heard my graceful fall into her favourite plant and decide that it’s a good time to check my room to see if I’m a good son or a delinquent troublemaker.
