The alpha who came back

954 Words
The air changed before he even arrived. Lyra felt it. Not through sound. Not through scent. Through the bond. It stirred violently in her chest, like something long buried had just been dragged back to life. Her breath hitched. No. No, no— “Stay where you are.” Ronan’s voice cut through her panic, sharp and commanding. Lyra looked up. He was already moving toward the door, his entire body tense in a way she hadn’t seen before. Not fear. Preparation. “For what?” she asked, though she already knew. Ronan paused at the doorway, glancing back at her. “For him.” The moment the door opened— Power slammed into the room. Heavy. Crushing. Familiar. Lyra’s knees nearly buckled. Kael. Even without seeing him, she knew. Her wolf surged painfully, reacting to his presence like a wound being reopened. Mate. The broken bond pulsed erratically. Her chest tightened. Her body betrayed her. And she hated it. Outside— Silence. Not peaceful. Not calm. The kind of silence that came before destruction. Lyra forced herself up, ignoring the weakness in her limbs, and moved toward the entrance. She needed to see. Needed to face it. Because running— She was done running. The moment she stepped outside— Everything stopped. Time. Breath. Thought. Because he was there. Alpha Kael Draven. Standing at the edge of Ronan’s territory like a storm given form. His presence was just as overwhelming as she remembered—dark, powerful, absolute. But something about him was different. Subtle. Sharp. His gaze found hers instantly. And this time— There was no indifference. No cold dismissal. Only intensity. Raw. Unfiltered. Dangerous. The bond snapped tight. Pain exploded through Lyra’s chest. She gasped, stumbling slightly as her hand flew to her heart. Kael’s expression darkened. He felt it too. Of course he did. “Lyra.” Her name left his lips like it meant something now. Too late. The words burned. She straightened slowly, forcing herself to hold his gaze despite the chaos raging inside her. “I told you,” she said, her voice quieter than she wanted but steady enough, “I wouldn’t trouble you again.” Something flickered across his face. Regret? Gone too quickly to be sure. “You’re coming back with me,” Kael said. Not a request. A command. Lyra almost laughed. Almost. “No,” she said. Simple. Final. The word echoed louder than a scream. The warriors behind Kael shifted uneasily. Ronan stepped forward beside her. Silent. Solid. Unyielding. Kael’s gaze flicked to him. And the temperature dropped. “So,” Kael said slowly, his voice laced with something dark, “This is where you ran to.” Lyra stiffened. “I didn’t run to anyone,” she snapped. Ronan didn’t move. Didn’t react. But the air around him sharpened. Kael noticed. Of course he did. His eyes narrowed. “You’re standing beside him,” Kael said. “That says enough.” Lyra’s jaw tightened. “I’m standing,” she corrected, “because he didn’t break me.” The words hit harder than she expected. Silence followed. Heavy. Tense. And for the first time— Kael flinched. It was small. Barely noticeable. But it was there. And Lyra saw it. “Lyra,” Kael said again, his voice lower now, more controlled, “You don’t understand what you’re doing.” Her chest tightened. Anger surged. “No,” she said, her voice rising, “you don’t understand.” The bond pulsed violently again. Pain laced every word—but she pushed through it. “You rejected me,” she continued. “You stood there—” her voice cracked, just slightly, “—and you destroyed something you didn’t even try to understand.” Kael’s expression hardened. “I did what was necessary.” The words felt like a slap. Lyra’s breath caught. “Necessary?” she repeated, disbelief cutting through the pain. “Yes.” Cold. Unyielding. The same tone. The same Alpha. The same man who had broken her. Something inside Lyra went still. Not shattered. Not weak. Still. And that was worse. “Then live with it,” she said quietly. The finality in her voice echoed across the clearing. Kael’s eyes darkened. “You’re still mine.” The words snapped something. Not in her. In the bond. It surged violently, reacting to his claim. Lyra gasped, doubling over as pain ripped through her chest again. But this time— Something else answered. Her head snapped up. Her eyes— Flashed silver. Stronger this time. Brighter. Unmistakable. The ground beneath them trembled. Just slightly. But enough. Everyone felt it. Everyone saw it. Kael stilled. Shock flickered across his face. Real shock. “What… was that?” one of his warriors whispered. Ronan didn’t move. Didn’t look surprised. But his gaze— Locked onto Lyra with sharp, calculating intensity. Lyra’s breathing turned uneven. The power flickered again— Then vanished. Leaving her weak. But not broken. Kael stepped forward. Instinctively. Like he was drawn to her. Like the bond was pulling him closer despite everything. Ronan moved at the same time. Blocking him. The two Alphas stood face to face. Power collided. Invisible. Violent. Deadly. The air itself seemed to crack under the pressure. “Move,” Kael said. Ronan didn’t. “No.” Simple. Final. Unmovable. Kael’s eyes burned. “That’s mine.” Ronan’s expression didn’t change. But his next words did everything else. “No,” he said quietly. “She’s not.” Silence. Then— Chaos waiting to happen. Kael’s control snapped just slightly. Enough. “Then I’ll take her.” The threat was clear. The intent— Unmistakable. Ronan smiled. Slow. Dangerous. “Try.”
