“How can the Moon Goddess be so cruel?” Zayden roared, his body shaking with anger. “How could she do this to us? How?” Standing behind him, Dhara trembled from head to toe. Her heart pounded hard in her chest, and her knees felt weak. The rage pouring out of her alpha filled the room and made her chest ache painfully. Seeing him so hurt, so close to breaking apart, made her feel terrible about their situation. But what could she do? The Moon Goddess shaped everyone’s destiny—or at least that was what she had always been taught. And who could go against a goddess? Still, despite the anger radiating from Zayden, Dhara took a deep breath and stepped closer to him. Even without touching him, she could feel the storm raging inside him. He was drowning in anger, frustration, and heartbreak. The moment she lifted her hand to place it on his shoulder—to calm him down and remind him that fighting a goddess would solve nothing—Zayden suddenly turned around and pinned her against the wall beside the window. His tall body towered over her smaller frame. She felt tiny beneath him, yet strangely overwhelmed by emotions she couldn’t explain. She gasped softly. “Why?” he asked again, this time in a rough, broken whisper. His voice carried so much pain that it pierced straight through her heart. His warm breath brushed against her skin, making her body tremble in ways she didn’t understand. “Because it’s for the greater good,” she whispered gently, trying hard not to break apart herself. She searched his eyes, wanting him to understand that she was hurting too. In her entire life, she had never felt anything this strong or magical for anyone else. It was only him she wanted. Only him she longed for. But her fate had already been decided. “For the pack,” he muttered, lowering his head into the crook of her neck. Zayden hated how easily her soft voice calmed him. Whenever she was near, all he wanted was to kiss her until she couldn’t breathe and mark her as his forever. But he couldn’t. No matter how much his wolf begged and growled inside him, he couldn’t. The Moon Goddess had made sure of that. She had made sure the Alpha of the Bloodmoon Pack suffered in the cruelest way possible. By never allowing him to claim his mate.
