"Mhm!!" I tried everything I could as Dad’s words stuck in my mind drowning in penitence, "Irene's flairs are known to everyone. What if they are waiting for you to dismiss her? Knowing in her presence nothing could harm you?!" I stopped moving ,losing my senses but then the sound of gunshots reached my ears and my mind was blurry but could clearly see how wrong I was.
Immerse in repentance of realization she truly was a protector but my stupid resentment for her eyes broke everything and now before I could lose my life by my stupidity a gunshot was heard, my eyes could literally follow the movement of the gun which moved from right in front of me.
The moment slowed down when I saw the bullet going rapidly right before my eyes with bare distance between us, my heart skipped a beat thinking it might not be directed to me but fortunately it passed and hit the person holding me captive right in the head.
My eyes widened for a second by the accuracy of the shot which hit it’s target so perfectly and barely dodged me. I looked up, only you saw none other than Irene there, holding a pistol in both of her hands. I stumbled back then another shot came from the right direction and hit another person, Lucas came from there.
The guys also took out their guns and I hid behind the car, hearing the shot of guns, cursing myself for being so irresponsible and stupid. How can I let my emotions overcome me?
“Are you alright, Sir?” Irene asked, coming to me. “Irene!” I called her. “Y-Yeah..” I said panting heavily. “Irene, I.. I am-” She cut me off before I could apologize for my behaviour. “Everything is clear, Let’s go.” She said, motioning me to get up. Nodding, I got up as everyone came around me.
Irene secured one gun over her back and held the other one in her hand. “Is everyone dead?” She asked.
“I don’t know. But we have shot everyone.” Johnson told her. “I see. You two stay with Sir. We will take a look and call the police as well.” She informed them, walking out.
“Irene.” She was about to walk out from behind the car but I held her wrist. She stopped and turned to me, raising a brow at my action. “Thank you.” I said sincerely.
Taken aback, she opened her mouth to say something but closed her mouth, scanning from top to bottom, she moved her hand away, “It’s my duty.” She replied blankly and walked out, motioning Lucas to come after her.
There were six of them, two were shot in the head and the condition of the rest is known. I peeked and saw Irene checking on them. The blood splattered everywhere was grotesque enough to make me throw up.
The sight was repugnant enough to wallow my heart in gloom, I quickly looked away not wanting to see the horrifying sight where Irene step on the blood with no expression and moved the corpse by her feet as if it meant nothing.
“You b***h!!” A person who was acting to be shot shouted and pointed at Irene ready to shoot her. “Irene!” I called her worriedly, not wanting her to die because of me. Any more guilt will kill and I cannot bear this. If something happened to her it would be my fault for holding meaningless loathe for her eyes and I cannot bear it. Freddy, Pulled me back as both Irene and the guy on the ground shot at the same time.
Her attack pierced his head, stiffing me in dread as I quivered in ultimate fright by her action which shredded no time killing him. I can understand it was her work but… wasn’t it too cruel?
She tried to move but she was also shot in the leg. “f**k!” She groaned in pain, leaning back to the car with blood flowing from her leg. “Irene!” I rushed to her side with my heart beating in a strange pain. She fell down groaning but what’s more terrifying was that she has no sign of pain or agony on her face rather… exasperation.
I remained motionless, not removing my eyes from hers as tears brimmed in my eyes. This woman is scaring me. I took a step back, she grit her teeth, taking out her scarf and wrapping it over her bloody leg. “Make it tight.” She hissed. My lips were shivering. She was either too skilled or too dead to reach any pain in her heart. Turning away and moving back, putting my head over the car, losing my breath as a tear was released from my eyes.
My mind was intoxicated in anguished thoughts which are breaking my tranquil, pushing me in the void of a calm chaos where I could hear screams but cannot react to it. Curling my hands in a fist, I remained like this, releasing another tear. How can you not feel? I sadly thought and pressed my teeth against themselves.
Taking a few deep breaths, I moved back, breathing heavily, trying to soothe the havoc storming in my score. I said breathlessly, “Come Irene, Let’s take you to the hospital.”
“I will take care-” I cut her off, “Can’t you see the blood. Freddy and Lucas will take care of things, You are coming with me.” I ordered sternly, bending and wrapped my arms around her. I picked her from the ground. She gasped at my abrupt movement and held my neck.
“W-What are you doing, Sir?” She was slightly staggered by my action. “You are coming with me.” I told her firmly, Placing her on the backseat and took her to the hospital with Johnson.
Worried about Irene’s condition, I paced around, covering my mouth with my hand, utterly disquiet about her. The strong anticipation of her heartlessness evoked apprehension in my heart surely but I cannot disregard the fact I need her in dire conditions. She saved my life and I need to thank her for this and apologize too because now I have understood her importance. Maybe Dad was right, they were waiting for Irene to leave my side and then attack me. She is the key for my insurance.
Her abilities are truly remarkable, how she reacts too quickly before something happens and not to mention accuracy of her shots. It’s frightening and her gaze, they are something else, I guess it’s the after effect of working for a long time, losing emotions.
Soon Dad came, perturbed about me, “Oh Damien, how are you, you are not hurt, are you?” He asked, sweat forming over his forehead, losing his breaths in the tension. “I am fine, Dad. Everyone protected me.” I told him. “Oh thank God, I am glad to hear.” He finally let out a sigh of relief. “Just Irene got shot.” I told her. He hummed in nodding, “How is she?”
“Fine.” I told him. After a silence I called him, “Dad…”
“Yeah?”
“You were right. I shouldn’t have fired her.” I told him with a glint of remorse. “I told you, didn’t I?”
“Now I have understood her importance.” I passed him a faint smile. “Yeah, that’s why I told her not to leave the work.” He smiled back. My eyes widened, not expecting this, “You did?” I asked in disbelief. “Of course, or else why would she come to protect you?” He asked.
“Hmm. You are right…” I mused, holding my chin. She would never give a damn but if she wanted she could have left me to die but she didn’t and fulfill her duty, this thought deluged me in guilt more. Biting my lips I looked away and went to Johnson.
“Was Irene always there?” I asked hesitantly. “Yeah.” He replied. I grit my teeth, looking down in shame at my ridiculous and bratty behaviour.
I opened my mouth to speak further but the Doctor came to go to him, asking about her desperate, “How’s she, Doc?”
“She is fine, you can meet her.” He told us and I don’t know what took over me as I entered hastily. She was sitting, observing the bandages around her calf. When I entered she raised an eyebrow at me, “What are you doing here?” She asked.
“I.. um.. I..” I trailed off, not knowing what to say. She sighed, “I can’t work for the next five days.”
“You can rest for a week.” I told her quickly. “I don’t need a week.” She replied, moving to get water but I handed her. “There you go.”
“Thank you.” She mumbled and drank some water. “Honestly you waste money by taking me here.” She said, “What are you saying? You were injured.” I argued. “There are many hospitals.” She muttered.
“You’re… unbelievable.” I breathed out, exhaling and shaking my head in disappointment, knowing she is still the same.
“Anyways, Irene.” I called her after a while. “Hmm?”
“I want to say something.” I began to say nervously, looking away. “Yeah.. what is it?” She asked, giving me her attention fully. “I. Um… Thank you for protecting me.” I stuttered. She let out a dry laugh, “We all protected you and I got shot because of my recklessness. Besides, It’s my job.” She told me, leaving me speechless. I bit my cheeks, mentally preparing for my next word because I know it’s my fault I have to redeem is as I took a deep breath and said what I wanted to tell her for a while after knowing her worth,
“Irene. I am sorry.”
