Elizabeth raised her eyebrows as she walked into the living room, curious as to why Elaine looked hurt by who was on the phone. The moment that Elaine noticed that Elizabeth had walked into the room, the look of hurt was immediately replaced with a small smile as she held the phone out to the girl, giving it a small shake to tell her to come and get it.
"A girl by the name of Diana wants to know if you're still on for tonight." Elaine said in a voice that didn't really seem very happy. Elizabeth nodded slightly before reaching out and taking ahold of the phone before putting it up to her ear. Elizabeth gave Elaine a small smile as if to say thank you and then watched as Elaine walked over to the couch and took a seat. After finding that she was staring at Elaine, Elizabeth soon faced the kitchen and spoke into the phone to get Diana's attention.
"I hear you want to know something? Well, the answer to your question is yes. I'll still be meeting you at the café like we talked about." Elizabeth said while nodding a little into the phone. Last weekend, Elizabeth had made a trip to a little café in Camden to meet Diana so that they could participate in the open mic night that was held there. Well, Diana had called her again about halfway through the week wanting to know if Elizabeth was interested in returning to the little place to participate once again and Elizabeth had never really given the girl an answer.
"That's great to hear! Now, what about the second part of my question?" Diana questioned, causing Elizabeth to raise her eyebrows slightly. There was a second part to the question? There was no way that Elizabeth was going to be able to pass if off as her being the one on the phone to start with because she didn't know what the second part was.
"Um... what was the second part again?" Elizabeth asked hesitantly while moving the hand that wasn't holding the phone to her ear to run through her hair, playing with her lip ring slightly nervous. For a moment, Diana didn't say anything. It was like she was trying to think of something before she suddenly gasped into the phone.
"You didn't answer the phone, did you? That was someone else wasn't it?" Diana asked, her tone clearly shocked that she had asked all of that to someone that wasn't Elizabeth. Also, it slightly shocked her that someone else was in the house with Elizabeth.
"Yeah, that was someone else that you talked to. Now, what was the second part that you were talking about? I kind of need to spend time with my guest." Elizabeth replied while looking over at Elaine, offering her an apologetic look at the fact that she was talking on the phone rather than talking to her. Elaine shook her head slightly as if to say it was okay and Elizabeth smiled a little.
"Well, I was wondering if you would be able to stop by the shop a little early so we can make sure that things are completely ready before the mic night starts tonight. I don't want anything to go wrong tonight. I mean, there are supposed to be more people there than normal." Diana mentioned, the last part there to make sure that Elizabeth was going to be taking the performance seriously tonight. However, Elizabeth wasn't really worried because she had a feeling that things were going to be great and she knew that she herself would be taking the performance completely seriously.
"You know that I'll be taking it seriously and I would really love to stop by a little early, but I've got some plans for the day and don't really want to have to cancel them so soon. Would it be okay with you if I stopped by at the normal time? I promise you that everything will be ready and completely great by the time everyone gets there." Elizabeth added, sounding a little hopeful towards the end. She really didn't have to push Elaine out of the house too soon just so that she could leave to go get ready for open mic night at a little café.
After getting the answer to the question that she had asked, Elizabeth thanked Diana before telling the other girl that she had to leave. After saying good-bye, Elizabeth hung up before walking over to the love seat that was on the other side of the coffee table, directly across from the couch and offered Elaine a kind smile. Elizabeth pulled her legs up on the love seat and crossed them before running a hand through her hair.
"I'm really sorry about that. Diana wanted to know if I was still planning on participating in the open mic night in the little café in Camden." Elizabeth explained, feeling that she needed to explain what she was talking about, as well as who exactly Diana was. Besides, it most likely sounded like something completely different when Elaine first heard it. Normally Elizabeth wouldn't really bother trying to explain who was calling and for what reason because of two things: No one from school had ever set foot inside her house and she would most likely tell them that it was none of their business. However, something had compelled her to tell Elaine who was calling and the reason that it most likely seemed like a date had been set between the two of them. Maybe it was the look on Elaine's face earlier or the fact that Elizabeth may be starting to let her feelings make her decisions for her. Whatever the reason, it was a little out of the typical behavior for Elizabeth.
"No, it's completely alright. You have a right to have a couple of friends and I don't want to take away from your conversations with them. Also, I know that I haven't really been awake that long, but I don't have to interfere with you plans for the day, so I can go ahead and head out if you want me to." Elaine stated as she got ready to get up off the couch, though Elizabeth stopped her before she could get up completely.
"You're not messing with my plans at all. In fact, if you would like, I was thinking that I could include you in them. I know that you may have plans of you own, and I understand if you don't want to take part in mine, I just thought I would ask and see what you had to say about it." Elizabeth replied a little shyly, never really having asked someone to spend the day with herself. Elaine couldn't help but smile at the offer. She herself didn't have anything to do once she got home except see if there was anything on TV and then maybe grade some more of the papers that students had turned in recently.
"Elizabeth, I would love to. I don't have any other plans at home and I would love to join you today. May I ask what your plans are? I'm just a little curious as to what we'll be doing and when." Elaine questioned while sitting up a little on the smaller couch, raising an eyebrow slightly as she started to think of what exactly Elizabeth could be doing on the second day of their really rather short break and if it involved any of the other students from the school. Would it be considered a date if Elaine says yes?
"Well, Elaine I was planning on making it a surprise because I don't want you to think that I'm lying about what I'm doing. After all, I am the 'bad girl' at school. As for the time, we have to leave here in about 15 minutes because last time that I looked at the clock it was 9:30. I have to be there before 10:15." Elizabeth stated as she slowly stood up and stretched, looking around the room for a moment. After a moment, she walked over to stand in front of Elaine, offering her a hand to help her up.
"Well, I think that sounds wonderful and I'm not going to think that you're lying to me simply because of how the rest of the school sees you. I'll make my own judgments of you as I get to know you, because you never know what I might learn that the school will never know." Elaine mentioned while standing up after having taken a hold of Elizabeth's hand, smiling as she was helped off of the couch to stand.
"You do have a point. I don't really have anyone to impress at school so I don't really care how they see me there, but here is different I guess. I don't want you to think I'm just a fight starting rebel all the time." Elizabeth confessed, shocking herself when she heard that she had said this. She'd never said anything like that before because normally, Elizabeth didn't care what people thought of her, but she wanted to impress Elaine. Elizabeth didn't want to seem like a troublesome kid all of the time.
"So, are you saying that you have someone to impress outside of school?" Elaine questioned with a small giggle, looking up at Elizabeth just in time to see the girls cheeks turn a slightly red color, indicating that she was blushing. Elizabeth looked away slightly and slowly let go of Elaine's hand, which she had still been holding despite the fact that the woman had been standing for a moment or so. Elizabeth wanted to say something, but feared that she would mess up so she simply shook her head, which gained another small giggle from Elaine.
"Would you like to go ahead and leave? I mean, we don't have to, I just have to make sure that I have everything that I'm going to need." Elizabeth asked while putting her hands in the pockets of her sweatpants, smiling softly at Elaine as she stood there and patiently waited for an answer. Elaine thought for a moment before nodding her head, walking towards the front door as Elizabeth did.
"Wait, how do you plan on getting us there if you have to bring something with you? You can't do that on you motorcycle, can you? Not with me on the back at least. Unless it's not really big." Elaine said while bending over to pull on the bottoms of the sweatpants that she was wearing. Just after she had them pulled up, Elaine spotted her boots and knew that they wouldn't look right with what she was wearing. Elizabeth had already picked up on this, and when Elaine stood up to say something about it, Elizabeth just smiled and held out a pair of grey Nike running shoes out to her.
"My motorcycle isn't the only way that I can get around. Typically only ride it when I'm heading out to work and sometimes when I feel like driving to school. If I'm going somewhere else, I drive in the Civic. Also, that would be how I bring the stuff I need." Elizabeth explained while pulling on her own pair of grey Nike's only there were bigger and actually fit her. The ones that Elaine had been given her from when Elizabeth was younger and her feet were smaller. Thankfully she had never gotten around to throwing them out.
"That does make since and about working at the bar, does your boss know how old you actually are? I mean out of all of the bars or clubs that I been to you are by far the youngest bartender that I have ever seen." Elaine commented while walking out of the door as Elizabeth opened it for her. Elizabeth didn't say anything as she closed the door and locked it, turning around and looking at Elaine for a moment before she finally spoke up to answer the question.
"Yes, he does and there are reasons that I work there despite my age. I know, I'm not the typical age of someone that works in a bar, but I don't really have a choice of where I work. Most of the places around her don't really take in the fact that there are times in which students can't make it to work because of after school things. The club however, is mainly busy on the weekends, and that's when I had to work. By the way, I'm sorry about missing that rehearsal. I would have called to say something, but I don't have the numbers of anyone in the Drama club." Elizabeth explained while walking over to the car.
Elaine nodded a little while mumbling an 'It's okay', understanding now why Elizabeth had missed the rehearsal and she wasn't going to blame the girl. Working to earn money was more important than showing up to rehearsal for a school play. Elaine walked over to the car with Elizabeth, smiling at the gesture that Elizabeth had made when she opened the door for Elaine. It was a gesture that Elaine hadn't seen in a long time and it made her smile. Elizabeth gently closed the door and walked to the back of the car, quickly popping the trunk which left Elaine to look around the car.
The smile from the gesture was still on her face as she buckled up and looked around the car to see if there was anything that could tell her a little more about Elizabeth. Something that she could use to maybe start a conversation once the girl got in the car as well. After a moment of looking, Elaine spotted something in the driver's seat that caused her heart to sink and the smile to immediately fade from her face. It was a funeral pamphlet and on the front there was a picture of a rather beautiful black haired woman with brown eyes standing in the arms of a blonde man with stunning blue eyes that Elaine immediately recognized. The fact that the woman looked so much like Elizabeth and that the man's eyes were the exact same shade as Elizabeth’s' made Elaine's heart sink even lower. However, the words below the picture of the happy couple completely broke the woman's heart.
In loving memory of Natalie and James Grey. Loving parents and friends. They will be missed dearly
