CHAPTER 1 - The Company Party
The city skyline shimmered under the night sky, its lights reflecting the restless heartbeat of Elaris. From the top floor of the imposing Voss Tower, the annual corporate gala was in full swing, laughter and clinking glasses filling the grand ballroom. Adrian Voss, impeccably dressed in a tailored midnight-blue suit, moved through the crowd with a practiced ease. Charm was part of his arsenal, and tonight, it was deployed with precision.
At his side, Alice Harrington smiled as if the night had been designed just for her. Her gown sparkled under the crystal chandeliers, and her laughter carried an edge of calculated warmth. To anyone watching, they were the perfect couple: powerful, elegant, untouchable. But behind the polished smiles lay a fragile alliance, a relationship built more on convenience and strategy than love. Adrian’s eyes, however, betrayed the truth. He was not here for her. Not really.
Across the room, Elizabeth Mercer moved quietly, balancing a tray of champagne glasses. Working part-time at events like this wasn’t glamorous, but it paid the bills and kept her afloat while she chased dreams that seemed always just out of reach. Her dress, borrowed and slightly too tight, drew some curious glances, but she ignored them, focusing on her job. Tonight was meant to be just another night of work, routine and predictable—until nothing went as planned.
Alice had been watching Adrian closely, her mind calculating every step, every word. She wanted control, wanted him to fall deeper into the web she was weaving. In a quiet moment, she slipped a small vial into his drink while he conversed with a client, the act unnoticed by anyone but herself. Adrian, unsuspecting, raised his glass and smiled at her. That smile, usually reserved for charm and diplomacy, never reached his eyes tonight.
Meanwhile, Elizabeth was guided, somewhat accidentally, into the wrong corridor by a distracted co-worker. The hallway was dim, lined with polished oak doors that all looked identical. When she reached the door marked 1207, she hesitated. Something told her this wasn’t her assigned room, but a sense of duty—or perhaps curiosity—pushed her forward. She knocked softly, expecting to announce herself as staff. No answer. She turned the handle.
Adrian, already feeling the strange effects of the drug coursing through him, was alone in the room, confusion clouding his thoughts. When Elizabeth entered, he barely recognized her—or, more accurately, he mistook her for Alice. It was a combination of poor lighting, a haze over his mind, and a collision of circumstance.
“Ah… Alice?” he murmured, his voice uneven.
Elizabeth blinked, startled by the familiarity in his tone. “I… I think you’ve got the wrong room,” she said softly, unsure why he was staring at her like that.
But before she could step back, the night spiraled into chaos neither had intended. Words faltered, emotions collided, and by the end of it, one unplanned, irrevocable choice had been made.
As the city lights sparkled obliviously outside, neither Adrian nor Elizabeth knew that a single night would change their lives forever, leaving a mark that time would not erase.
The gala continued downstairs, laughter echoing, champagne flowing, yet above it all, a secret had been born—one that would unravel in ways no one could foresee.
