NICK HAD SPENT THE night in a chair beside Maggie’s bed. She was in a private room with a large window that let in light but looked out on another building outside. The hospital bed was slightly elevated to help her breathe and she still had her intravenous and oxygen. There were three identical padded armchairs that were burgundy in colour and the foot-rest pulled out for a comfortable sleeping chair.
