Prologue
PROLOGUE
THE WOMAN WHO STOOD AGAINST HIM
The courtroom was silent.
Not the ordinary kind of silence.
This was the kind that came before a storm.
Hundreds of eyes were fixed on the young woman standing alone before the judge. Her black robe fell perfectly over her shoulders, her hair neatly pulled back, and a thin folder rested against her chest.
She looked calm.
Almost frighteningly calm.
But beneath the polished exterior was a heart that had survived years of anger, grief, betrayal, and a love she had once believed would save her.
Now, that same love was sitting across the courtroom.
Her enemy.
Her greatest regret.
And the man she had never stopped loving.
Serena Vale slowly lifted her eyes.
There he was.
Adrian Cross.
He sat behind the opposing counsel's table, dressed in a perfectly tailored black suit. His expression was unreadable, his dark eyes fixed solely on her.
Once, those eyes had been the safest place she knew.
Once, she had believed that no matter what happened, Adrian would stand beside her.
She had been wrong.
Or perhaps...
she had simply been too late to learn the truth.
"Counselor Vale."
The judge's voice pulled her back.
Serena straightened.
"Yes, Your Honor."
"You may proceed with your closing statement."
A murmur passed through the courtroom.
Everyone knew what this case meant.
It wasn't merely a lawsuit.
It wasn't merely about money, power, or reputation.
It was about a family that had been destroyed fifteen years ago.
Her family.
The Vale family.
And the man sitting across from her was the son of the man she had sworn to bring down.
Victor Cross.
The most powerful businessman in the country.
A man who had built an empire while Serena's father lost everything.
His company.
His reputation.
His career.
And eventually, his life.
Serena tightened her grip around the folder.
For fifteen years, she had carried one question in her heart.
Why?
Why had her father been accused?
Why had everyone abandoned him?
Why had the Cross family continued to rise while hers had fallen apart?
And why...
why had the man she loved been born into the family she hated?
She took one step forward.
Her heels echoed against the polished courtroom floor.
Click.
Click.
Click.
Every sound seemed louder than the last.
She stopped in front of the judge.
Then she turned toward the jury.
Her voice was steady.
"Good afternoon."
No tremble.
No hesitation.
Just confidence.
"My name is Serena Vale."
She paused.
"And for fifteen years, my family has been told to accept a lie."
The courtroom became completely still.
Adrian's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Serena noticed.
She always noticed him.
Even after everything.
She continued.
"My father was called a criminal."
She opened the folder.
"He was called corrupt."
Another document.
"He was called a liar."
Her fingers tightened around the papers.
"And because powerful people repeated those accusations often enough, everyone eventually believed them."
She looked toward Victor Cross.
The older man sat confidently beside his lawyers.
He wasn't afraid.
He had spent fifteen years believing that no one could touch him.
Serena smiled faintly.
"Unfortunately for him..."
She raised the final document.
"Today, I brought evidence."
A gasp moved through the courtroom.
The judge leaned forward.
Victor Cross's expression finally changed.
Serena's eyes moved toward Adrian.
For a moment, the courtroom disappeared.
There was only him.
The boy she had met years ago.
The boy who had once challenged her in a university debate.
The man who had become her rival.
Her friend.
Her lover.
Her enemy.
And the man who had broken her heart without ever knowing that she had already given him every piece of it.
Adrian slowly stood.
"Serena."
Her name left his lips like a plea.
Her heart betrayed her.
It still reacted to him.
After everything.
After all the lies.
After all the nights she had cried herself to sleep.
After convincing herself that she no longer loved him...
her heart still recognized his voice.
But she couldn't let it show.
She looked at him coldly.
"Mr. Cross."
His jaw tightened.
"Please."
Serena's eyes hardened.
"Don't."
"I can explain."
"You've had years."
His face fell.
"I know."
"No, Adrian."
Her voice became softer.
And somehow, that was worse.
"You don't know."
She looked at him for one final second before turning away.
"You don't know what it feels like to spend your entire life believing your father was innocent."
Adrian swallowed.
"And you don't know what it feels like to discover that the person you love belongs to the family responsible for destroying everything you have."
Silence.
Serena took a breath.
Then she faced the jury.
"But today isn't about love."
Her voice strengthened.
"It's about truth."
She placed the evidence on the table.
"And the truth doesn't care who is rich."
She looked directly at Victor Cross.
"It doesn't care who is powerful."
Then she looked at Adrian.
"And it certainly doesn't care who we love."
Her voice echoed throughout the courtroom.
"Justice has no surname."
Adrian's eyes glistened.
Serena looked away before she could lose her courage.
Because she knew something he didn't.
This case wasn't just going to destroy his father's empire.
It was going to destroy the last remaining piece of the life they could have had together.
And yet...
she had already made her choice.
She would choose justice.
Even if it meant losing him.
Even if it meant breaking her own heart.
Even if she had to stand in front of the man she loved and say the words she had spent years trying not to say.
"Your Honor..."
Serena lifted her chin.
"I am ready to prove that my father was innocent."
A pause.
"And I am ready to prove that the Cross family lied."
Across the courtroom, Adrian stared at her.
He knew then.
There was no turning back.
Not for her.
Not for him.
Not for them.
Because sometimes...
the greatest love story begins with two people standing on opposite sides of the courtroom.
And sometimes...
the person you are destined to love is the very person you were taught to hate.
But Serena didn't know one thing yet.
The evidence she had just presented would uncover a secret far more devastating than anything she had imagined.
A secret that would force her to question everything.
Her father's innocence.
Adrian's betrayal.
Her family's past.
And the reason their lives had been connected long before they ever met.
Because the truth was...
Adrian Cross had never been her real enemy.
And the person who had destroyed her family...
was much closer than she thought.
Fifteen years earlier...
The story began.
