This wasn't how the lovers were to meet their end.
One mistake was all it took.
It wasn't locked as it should have been. The door. The door that led the boys to their demise.
They were too busy having one of their sweet yet passionate kisses. Breaking away for oxygen, their eyes met again. A loving gaze clouded with desire. Stuck in their moment, unaware of the woman standing by the open door. Shock, anger and disgust fighting to display themselves on her aging features. The silver chain around her neck, a religious gift, weighed heavy on her.
With a trembling hand, she knocked on the door. Both boys turned their attention to her at once. Luca, frozen from seeing his mother, peeked at his mother's face through his long chestnut curls.
"Mom, I can explain! Andrew and I..." Luca stuttered frantically.
At the mention of Andrew, the mother snapped her head in Andrew's direction and growled "get out."
Ignoring the woman, Andrew looked at his lover who looked back in fear yet smiled reassuringly. "It's okay. I'll be fine." Caressing Andrew's cheek lovingly, "I'll see you tomorrow, okay? I love you." Another sweet smile.
With a lingering kiss on the lips and a quiet 'I love you too.' Andrew hesitantly walked towards the woman who had masked her emotions quite skillfully.
Taking one last glance at a smiling Luca, Andrew quietly walked down the stairs, out the front door until the house couldn't be seen.
Locked or unlocked. In the end, it didn't matter.
After all, it was a sweet demise born out of love.
