THE FIRST NIGHT AT HOME was full of questions that I wasn’t sure how to respond at.
Throughout the entire night, the only thing that my family was able to ask me was where Gael was. It is almost like I was the in-law, and he was the son of the family that he didn’t deserve at all. And every single time his name comes out of my parents’ mouth, I always wonder how they would react if they found out what he did.
The next few days was calming as it is. I get to have my free time while working on some papers before passing my resignation letter. I have been working under Gael’s family company since we got married as the Human Resources Chief Officer. Even if I knew that I worked hard to earn that spot, I just knew that it is already impossible for the two of us to be in one workplace where everyone knows that we are married. Hence, I already gave my assistant a heads up to notify the Assistant Chief Officer to stand taking the lead while I am still around so he wouldn’t need to make that much adjustment once I am gone.
While I finish up some work, Kathleen gets to spend time with his grandparents and even my brother, who almost didn’t leave a single day without taking my child out with Ezekiel. As much as I want to reject his persistence to look after my daughter while I am busy because he was with Ezekiel, I don’t want to make things awkward as well.
“Mommy! We are back!”
I look at the direction to where the main door leads upon hearing my daughter’s voice. She was out once again with RJ and Dad while they bring her to the office and probably to the mall as well, like they always do.
Within a few seconds, my daughter finally appears on my sight with an unexpected person following her behind. Ezekiel happily puts down several paper bags on the floor while watching as Kathleen approaches me for a tight hug. As much as I want to give my full attention to my daughter, his presence didn’t help at all.
“How was your day, honey?” I question in a calm way as possible, focusing on my daughter.
“It was fine, Mommy. Uncle Kiel took me to the mall, and I played there!” She starts storytelling as I only smile in return. “We also ate somewhere during lunch, and it is my favorite restaurant now!”
A small chuckle escapes my lips. “Then I guess it is a new restaurant that Uncle Ezekiel took you in.” She nods her head like an innocent child that she is with a huge smile plastered on her lips. “It’s good to know that you had so much fun, baby. How about you go upstairs with nanny for now and take some shower then change your clothes for now? Mamu and Papu would arrive soon, and we will have dinner all together once they are here.”
“Okay, Mommy!” She said before walking towards to Ezekiel, tugging to his polo shirt. “Thank you so much for taking me out to play today, Uncle! You are the best!”
Ezekiel chuckles as I can only watch them, slowly getting along. “Better than your Uncle RJ?” He teases, making my daughter hesitate for a while and smile awkwardly that made him laugh. “I am just joking! You should go and follow what your mother said. I will see you again soon, okay?”
Kathleen takes out her pinky finger and stick it out on the air, making Ezekiel swear on it. “You promise, Uncle Kiel?”
“I promise, little princess.” Ezekiel says, wrapping his huge pinky finger to my child’s small finger.
I watch as Kathleen went with her nanny along to go up into our room, leaving me with Ezekiel alone in the floor. The silence formed between us as his eyes never leave the staircase until my daughter is out of his sight.
“Aren’t you staying for dinner?” I said, taking his attention away from the staircase, shifting to me.
He smirks. “Why? Do you want me to stay and eat with you?”
A sigh escapes my lips, rolling eyes and shaking my head. “It was a casual offer, Ezekiel. Since you already heard that we are about to have dinner, isn’t it too rude to not invite you after all that?” I pointed out.
He didn’t respond and just let out a small laugh in return. Since the moment we have met again, the only thing I have notice is that he is enjoying seeing me annoyed with his presence. I wouldn’t be surprised if that was his goal because he has been coming here almost everyday just for me to see his annoying face.
“I think I should pass for now. I have an important appointment with an investor tonight, so… maybe next time.” I only nod my head in return then went back to my work.
I kept my silence, not minding his presence still as much as I can. However, the moment he occupied one of the single couches, I only ended up distracted.
“Aren’t you leaving yet? You said that you have an appointment.” I pointed out.
“I do… but, I had some more important matter that I need to address with you.” I look up at right and meet his gaze, raising an eyebrow. “I hope you wouldn’t mind me spending time with your daughter?”
So… He has been noticing that.
“Not really. I am just worried that she might have been disturbing you too much already these days. I know that you also have some business on your own to handle, and I don’t want my daughter hindering you to do all those works.” I express.
Surprisingly, instead of any teasing remark, I earned a genuine smile from him. That is weird.
“You know? Spending time with your daughter these days wasn’t that bad. She is a sweet, good child, so it wasn’t hard to look after her whenever I can. Besides…” He stops for a moment, making me look at him curiously. “I don’t really look at her differently already, Mackenzie.”
My eyes blink in confusion.
“W-What do you mean?”
Suddenly, he took a deep breath and rested both of his arm on each top of his lap then lean slightly forward.
“I don’t treat her differently anymore, Kenny. For me,” I look deep into his eyes as he forms a sincere smile as he speaks his next words. “She is like a daughter of mine already.”
