PROLOGUE
In the midst of the well-organized party, my gaze locked into that one person who got everyone’s attention onto him since he arrived. His strong aura spreads across the room as he passes by each guest in his gray colored suit and shining leather shoes with pushed back hair and a grimace plastered into his lips. I know too well that he is enjoying being the apple of everyone’s eyes tonight. However, I also know better that his gaze… is only locked to me like mine to his. “Mr. Gil! You have finally arrived! We have been waiting for the most important person for us to arrive since the night started.” My father-in-law proudly and excitedly welcomed him in such a great mood. After years, he still looks beyond amazing. He stands there like the most intelligent man and the most confident one, knowing that businessmen in this room want him. They want his attention along with his support for their company. I almost jumped into my spot when I felt a tight squeeze to my hand, bringing me back to my senses. I look at the person next to me and it only hits me, I almost forgot that I already have my husband. He gave me a sharp look before gazing back at the man in front of us as he changed his expression, making sure that it could only be interpreted positively. I did the same and kept my composure, whispering silently to myself that my husband is next to me and that I shouldn't be bothered by the man in front of me. “Mr. Ferrer! Thank you for having me.” That familiar deep voice. It’s been so long. “I should be the one thanking you for accepting our invitation.” My father-in-law says with so much gladness in his tone. “We are more than honored to have you here with us tonight. But first, I would like you to meet my son, the CEO of Royal Ferrer Hotels, Gael Evan Ferrer.” My husband shakes hands with this important figure standing right in front of us while I try to keep my gaze down. “It is nice meeting you again, Mr. Gil. Thank you so much for coming tonight.” Gael said. “Well, I received a direct call invitation, so it was hard to say no.” He responded in such delight. Despite the calm in both of their tones, I could feel them having this silent war of nerves just by the way they looked at each other and the smug plastered on their lips. “Hello? Miss…?” I looked up and saw his gaze onto me, making me gulp down hard. “Mr. Gil, I would like you to meet Gabriela Mackenzie Ferrer,” Gael proudly starts, slipping his hand to my waist and letting it rest there. “My wife.” “Your wife…” That gaze… it has been so long since I have seen those. He is still the same person that he was back then. Too attractive for everyone to not notice and too intelligent looking for people not to respect. If only I knew that I had to meet him tonight, I would have just stayed home and used any excuse to pardon me. “It is nice meeting you,” He forms a smirk. “Mrs. Ferrer.” He extends his hand towards me for a handshake. I was hesitant to shake it. In fact, I didn’t want to do it at all because I knew the consequences it might bring me after, but I had no choice. I extended my hand to reach him and shake it, and I knew there… that something hadn't changed. I cleared my throat and smiled simply. “Likewise… Mr. Gil.” Or should I say, Ezekiel Peter Gil. The entire night, I was walking on eggshells. The thought of having him in the room almost drives me crazy. I couldn’t even focus on what was going on to the point I didn’t notice my husband leaving me behind and going off somewhere I don’t know. “Edward, have you seen my husband?” I asked his secretary after bumping into him in the room. “I believe Mr. Ferrer went to the restroom, Mrs. Ferrer. You should just wait for him at your table.” He said, calmly. I gave him my thanks before breathing properly, not until I caught his gaze at me meters away from where I am standing. Without hesitation, I walked towards the huge door and left the event hall to meet the peaceful corridor. I need this badly right now. “Are you trying to run away from me, Kenny, or what?” I stopped midway upon hearing his voice. I hesitated. Should I face him or not? If I don’t, then he would think that I am indeed avoiding him. It wouldn’t be proper. I turned around and smiled. “You are just imagining things, Mr. Gil.” He chuckles softly. “Mr. Gil?” I raise a brow when he starts making a strand towards me. “You make it sound like we don’t know each other, Kenny. Did you forget already?” “F-Forget what?” He squints his eyes on me before forming a smile. “That I am your brother’s best friend?” He pointed out, making me sigh in relief. “I know that we haven’t seen each other in a while, but isn’t it a bit harsh for you to act like a stranger right now?” If there is someone else in my shoes right now, anyone would choose to treat him like a stranger than not. A long history with him was never a better option than having no history with him at all. Besides, it’s not like our last interaction was… great to begin with. “Why didn’t you tell me that you were coming tonight?” I asked in a more friendly manner than I can. “Because a part of me knew that you might use any stupid excuse so you wouldn’t need to attend tonight.” He directly pointed out. He took a step forward, giving me such an intense gaze. “I know that you have been avoiding me, Mackenzie.” I look away. “Why should I? It’s not like you have done something wrong for me to avoid you.” “Didn’t I?” I look back, only to find his face closer than he was earlier. My breathing stops and my eyes widened in surprise. “Why are you avoiding me, Kenny?” “I am not… avoiding you.” His gaze deepened and it felt like I would become breathless any moment now. “You sure about that?” He whispers just enough for me to hear. “Ezekiel.” I warned him firmly, but he didn’t waive. I took a deep breath and pushed him away gently. “Stop doing this. I am married.” He didn’t say anything after that and just stared at me. Did he stop insisting? Before I could even say a word, a loud noise suddenly caught my attention from the restroom nearby as if something shattered into pieces. I passed by him and was about to walk towards that direction, but he suddenly caught my arm and stopped me. “Don’t bother going there.” He warned. I look at him suspiciously and he just keeps a straight face. Something is wrong. I yeet his hand away and made my way to the restroom. I know he was following me, but he won’t be able to stop me. Without hesitation, I opened the door of the restroom to check for any incident… but I was the one who ended up being the one in horror. Two half naked people on the sink, moaning, as the man behind pushing himself into the woman repeatedly. I stood there embarrassed, not until my eyes caught a familiar coat lying on the right side of the sink. It couldn’t be… “Gael...” He looks up to me and horror fills his face. “Gabriela.” My husband… is having an affair… and I didn’t know about it.
