Chapter 001 - the book
RUBY
Every young lady’s dream is to wake up next to a man who loves and values her, someone with whom she sees a promising future, or someone with a great job who spoils and caters to her. Well, we can't entirely say that was my life, because life with Ethan for these past three years has been everything any lady would wish for.
Ethan was someone who was ready to go far and wide for his woman, to make sure I never lacked anything, but there was something missing. Ethan wasn't like every other guy with a nine-to-five job; he was a Mafia gang member, someone I least expected to be this loving and compassionate.
He has proven countless times how much he loves and cherishes me; he's so transparent with me and never keeps anything away from me. He taught me every single thing I know today about the Mafia world, and every single day is another adventure with him.
I woke up to the scorching sun rays shining into my eyes in our not-so-big room. I squinted my eyes as they adjusted to the rays of sunlight when I felt a light kiss on my head.
“Good morning, beautiful,” he whispered in my ear, handing me a coffee, his deep green eyes piercing into my fierce blue eyes in admiration.
“Oh my love, isn't it too early for this?” I chuckled as I sat upright, adjusting my sitting position as I received the cup of coffee.
“Nothing is too early to be done for my princess Ruby,” he said with a smile as he gave me another peck on my lips.
“Thanks,” I muttered as my face lit up with a smile.
“Now drink up, and get ready; you don't want to be late for that godforsaken job of yours,” he said with an eye roll, making me chuckle. Ethan never liked the idea of me working in the diner as a waitress, but whenever he brought the topic up, I always argued about it until he stopped talking about it and gave up.
But he didn't totally give up because while other girls got mistreated and disregarded, every single male that came and went feared to even talk to me because Ethan had set quite an example with this guy who tried to molest me one time.
Ethan made sure he wasn't able to use his hands to touch anything underneath a skirt ever again. Everyone became afraid; even a newbie coming into town already knew not to mess with me. I loved when Ethan became possessive of me and how he claimed me as his on every occasion, but sometimes I got tired of the attention.
This made me rarely have any friends except for my best friend Hailey, who lived a few miles away from Ethan’s. I reluctantly got out of bed to freshen up as I got prepared for my job.
When I was all set, I went out to the living room, where I met Ethan making breakfast in the kitchen. He packed up some food for me, pulling me closer to himself; he stared into my eyes with a sheepish smile on his face.
“What?” I asked as my cheeks flushed with embarrassment. “What are you staring at?” I demanded with a sarcastic grin on my face.
“Uhm, let’s just say I love to be lost in the sea of love for my princess, lusting over her body.” He replied as his hands moved instinctively to my ass as he pulled me closer, placing a passionate kiss on my lips. I could feel his warm breath behind my ears as I moaned in pleasure, but I quickly stopped him before he went any further.
“Ethan, come on, I’ll only be gone for a few hours,” I said, pulling myself away from his grip.
“Well, a few hours feels like eternity, especially in that shitty workplace of yours.” He said in a sad tone. “Could I come watch over you?” He asked excitedly.
“Do I have to remind you every time how that went the last time?” I said with a raised brow.
“Nope,” he said sternly as we both shared a laugh. He helped me pack up my stuff and escorted me out.
“Ruby?” He called out; my name sounded like a melodious sound coming from his mouth. I turned my gaze towards him as we got to the elevator. “Be safe, and please don’t be late for dinner,” he said with a smile.
“I won’t forget, Ethan; see you in a few,” I said before pressing the down button on the elevator as I hurried to the train station and headed to work.
The day flew by pretty fast, and soon it was evening; the beautiful orange glow of the sun shone in the city as it set. I got to my apartment and met Hailey on the couch, panting and moaning, doing what she does best: f*****g random strangers and neighbors.
I rolled my eyes as I watched them get engrossed in their deceit. They didn’t even notice me coming.
“Get a room, Hailey,” I muttered as I walked down the hallway into my room.
“Whatever, b*tch,” she replied with a grin on her face as she continued her ordeal. I just smiled at her as I made my way to my room to get dressed for my date with Ethan. Minutes later, Hailey came into my room with a sly smile on her face.
“Hey, b*tch, going out?” She asked as she slumped on my bed.
“Yes, Hailey, I have a date with Ethan,” I said, but she only replied with an eye roll.
“You mean your thuggery boyfriend?” She said sarcastically.
“Yes, Hailey, my thuggery boyfriend, and you won’t get one if you don’t stop f*****g around like a loose dog,” I fired at her.
“No thanks! Who sticks to one d*ck when there are so many out there that could fit into these titties? I’m not up for that commitment s**t,” she said as she made her way to the door. “By the way, enjoy your date, and make sure to bring me something when you get back.” She said, and that’s one thing I loved about her: she might be really cocky at times, but she’s really a loving soul behind all this tough-girl charade she puts on.
“I might be staying over, Hailey, so don’t expect anything from me,” I yelled as she walked out of my room.
“F*ck you!” She yelled back, making me chuckle.
I applied the very last touch of my makeup before wearing the dinner dress Ethan got for me; he’d bought this specially made for today’s occasion. I slipped it onto my body as I blended it with high stiletto heels.
I got to the restaurant, where I met Ethan waiting for me outside, dressed in his cute and fitted black suit. His eyes lit up in a smile when he saw me.
“Here comes my princess,” he said as he walked toward me with a bouquet of roses. Sometimes I wonder what made him choose to belong to a mafia group; he was so much of a gentleman rather than a thug, I thought.
“Thanks, honey,” I said as I gave him a light kiss before we made our way in.
We got to our reservations and had an amazing dinner together. Soon we were done, and we made our way to his apartment in his Ford EcoSport to continue the night tale. We crowned it all with several rounds of amazing s*x, and soon we were both lying flat on the bed as the sound of our heavy breathing echoed through the room. By this time, it was already a few minutes before midnight.
“Oh baby, that was awesome,” I said, leaning close to him as I stared into his eyes, but his expression had changed.
“Ethan?” I called out, concern evident in my voice. “What’s wrong?” I added, but he just shoved my hands aside and made his way to his bedside table, making me sit upright with the blanket on my chest, already feeling alarmed.
He stayed that way for some minutes before turning to me. “Ruby?” He called, his voice firm and collected.
“Yes?” I replied, eager to know what had suddenly changed his mood.
“Have this,” he said, giving me an old journal.
“What’s this?” I asked, curious, as I flipped through the pages.
“That, right there, contains every possible secret you need to know about the Mafia world and codes,” he said, seriousness etching from his tone.
“Okay… but why are you giving me this?” I asked, confused.
“Ruby, I want you to take your stuff and leave immediately when the clock turns midnight,” he said sternly, but I just stared at him, confused. I looked at my watch, and it was just twenty minutes before midnight.
“Why?” I asked with a chuckle, still confused.
“Just do as I say, princess,” he said, staring deep into my eyes. But I knew better than to make any promises; why the sudden change in mood, I wondered as I stared back at him. But he just pressed his lips against mine as he stared deeply into my eyes, but something still didn't feel right.
