The Debt
The first thing Amara Bello noticed was the silence. Her father’s office was usually filled with the sounds of ringing phones, hurried footsteps, and the occasional laughter of employees. Today, there was nothing. Amara stood outside the half-open door, holding two cups of coffee she had bought on her way to work. She knocked lightly. “Dad?” No answer. She pushed the door open. Her father sat behind his desk, staring at a stack of papers as though they contained the worst news in the world. “Dad?” He looked up. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Amara slowly placed the coffee on his desk. “What happened?” Her father rubbed his forehead. “The bank rejected the extension.” Her stomach tightened. “What extension?” “The loan.” Amara stared at him. She knew the family business had been struggling for months, but her father had always insisted they would recover. “How much time do we have?” Her father’s silence answered before he did. “Seven days.” Amara’s heart dropped. “Seven days for what?” “To pay the outstanding debt.” She pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down. “How much?” Her father finally looked at her. “Twenty million.” Amara almost laughed. Not because it was funny. Because the number was impossible. “Twenty million naira?” He shook his head. “Dollars.” The room seemed to shrink around her. “Dad…” “I know.” “How did this happen?” Her father looked toward the window. “Bad investments. Rising debts. A business partner who disappeared when things became difficult.” Amara’s fingers tightened around the edge of her chair. “And the company?” “If we don’t pay, we lose everything.” Everything. The building. The employees. Their home. Years of her family’s work. Amara stood abruptly. “There has to be another way.” “I’ve tried everything.” “You can sell something.” “There isn’t enough.” “Borrow from someone.” “I already did.” “Then borrow again.” Her father’s tired expression broke her heart. “Amara, nobody is willing to lend me that kind of money.” She looked away. For years, she had watched her father build the company from nothing. She had seen him sacrifice weekends, holidays, and countless nights of sleep. She couldn’t stand by and watch it disappear. “What if I help?” Her father immediately shook his head. “No.” “You haven’t even heard me.” “I know what you’re going to say.” “I can sell my shop.” “No.” “I can sell my car.” “No.” “Dad—” “I said no.” His voice cracked through the room. Amara fell silent. Her father softened. “I didn’t build this company so my daughter could sacrifice everything for it.” “But it’s our family.” “And you’re my daughter.” He looked down at the papers. “You deserve a life that isn’t destroyed by my mistakes.” Amara swallowed the lump in her throat. Before she could respond, her father’s phone rang. He looked at the screen. His expression changed. “Who is it?” He didn’t answer. The phone continued ringing. Finally, he picked it up. “Hello?” Amara watched his face. “Yes.” A pause. “I understand.” Another pause. “No. Please give me more time.” Her father’s voice became desperate. “I’ll find the money.” He listened for several seconds. Then the call ended. He slowly placed the phone down. “Who was that?” “The bank.” Amara’s chest tightened. “They’re coming tomorrow.” “For what?” “To begin the legal process.” She closed her eyes. This couldn’t be happening. A few minutes later, Amara walked out of the office. She found her older brother, Daniel, standing in the hallway. From his expression, she knew he had heard everything. “Twenty million dollars,” she whispered. Daniel nodded. “I know.” “What are we going to do?” He looked exhausted. “I don’t know.” That was the first time Amara had ever heard those words from her brother. Daniel always had a solution. He was the person everyone called when something went wrong. But now even he had nothing. Amara looked through the glass doors toward the company floor. Employees were working as usual. They had no idea their jobs might disappear within days. She couldn’t let that happen. “There must be someone who can help.” Daniel gave a bitter laugh. “There is.” “Who?” He hesitated. “Adrian Vale.” Amara frowned. “The billionaire?” “Yes.” She had heard the name. Everyone had. Adrian Vale was the young billionaire CEO behind one of the country’s most powerful investment groups. He was known for buying failing companies and turning them into empires. He was also known for being ruthless. “Why would he help us?” “He won’t.” “Then why mention him?” “Because he’s the only person who could solve this.” Amara stared at her brother. “How do you know?” Daniel looked away. “Because Dad once worked with his family.” Something about the way he said it made Amara uneasy. “What aren’t you telling me?” “Nothing.” “Daniel.” He sighed. “There’s history between our families.” “What kind of history?” Before Daniel could answer, a black car stopped outside the building. A man in a dark suit stepped out. Then another. They walked toward the entrance. Amara’s eyes narrowed. “Who are they?” Daniel’s face went pale. “They’re from Vale International.” Her heartbeat quickened. “Why are they here?” Daniel didn’t answer. The glass doors opened. A tall man entered. He wore a perfectly tailored black suit and carried himself with the kind of confidence that made everyone nearby fall silent. His eyes swept across the room. Cold. Controlled. Powerful. Then his gaze stopped on Amara. For one strange second, neither of them moved. She didn’t know his name. But she knew exactly who he was. Adrian Vale. The billionaire. The man her family might need to save them. And, judging by the expression in his eyes, perhaps the last man they should trust. Adrian walked toward her. “Amara Bello?” She straightened. “Yes.” His gaze remained fixed on her. “I need to speak with you.” “About what?” A faint, unreadable smile touched his lips. “Your family’s debt.” Amara’s heart began pounding. “How do you know about that?” “Because,” Adrian said calmly, “I have an offer for you.” She stared at him. “What kind of offer?” He stepped closer. “One that could save your family.” Amara didn’t know it yet, but the moment she accepted his offer, her life would change forever. And the man standing before her wasn’t there to save her family out of kindness. He had his own reasons. Reasons that had begun years before Amara ever met him.
