CHAPTER ONE — The Stranger at the Club
Olivia's POV Having your own apartment sounds amazing until you realize you're the one responsible for paying for it. The rent, the electricity, the groceries and tuition. I stood in the middle of my new living room, staring at the boxes surrounding me. I had finally done it. I was officially living on my own in New York City, in my own apartment. I should have been happy. Instead, I was wondering if I had made the biggest mistake of my life. I walked toward the window and looked down at the city. Cars moved along the streets, their headlights glowing in the dark. People hurried past one another, everyone wrapped up in their own lives. Nobody knew me here and for some reason, that felt amazing. Back home, everybody knew my business. Especially my father. I hated how easily one thought of him could ruin my mood. My phone rang and I already knew who it was before I looked. Dad. I stared at the screen. I should let it ring. But eventually, I answered. “Hello?” “Olivia, where are you?” I frowned. “You know where I am.” “I'm asking where you are right now.” “In my apartment.” “You're alone?” I closed my eyes. “Dad.” “What?” “You don't have to check on me every five minutes.” There was silence. Then he sighed. “I am worried about you.” “You didn't worry when I was at home.” His breathing changed. I immediately regretted saying it. “Olivia…” “No.” I shook my head even though he couldn't see me. “I don't want to do this tonight.” “I'm trying.” “You've been trying for years.” “I'm sorry.” There it was again. That word “Sorry”. I was tired of hearing it. “Goodnight, Dad.” “Olivia, wait….” I ended the call. I stared at my phone for a few seconds. Then I tossed it on the couch. “Great.” My throat tightened. I hated how he could still get to me. I left Florida and moved hundreds of miles away. Yet somehow, one phone call was enough to make me feel like that scared girl again. I wiped at my eyes angrily. “Nope.” I wasn't going to cry, not tonight. I needed food and maybe a drink. Actually…I needed lots of drinks. I grabbed my purse and headed for the door. I didn't feel like cooking, so I stopped at a small takeout place and ordered a burger, fries, and a milkshake. I carried the bag down the street, eating a few fries as I walked. Then I saw a club. Bright lights, loud music. People standing outside, laughing and talking. I stopped. I should go home or maybe I need to forget. Just for one night. I pushed open the door and stepped inside. --- The music hit me the second I walked inside. Loud and heavy. Almost overwhelming. Exactly what I wanted. I handed my coat to the coat attendant, found a small table in the corner, and finished my food. Then I ordered a drink. Then another. By the third, my thoughts had finally started becoming quieter. My father, home, money and school. Everything blurred into the background. I leaned against the bar and closed my eyes. “Rough night?” I opened them. A man was sitting beside me. I hadn't even noticed him approach. He was dressed simply, but there was something about him that immediately caught my attention. His dark hair, strong jaw, broad shoulders. Damn he looked so hot. He had a calm expression that didn't quite match the chaos around us. And his eyes… His eyes were fixed on mine. I swallowed. “Something like that.” He glanced at my drink. “Trying to forget?” “Maybe.” “Does it work?” I looked at him. “Ask me tomorrow.” A small smile touched his lips. “I might.” I laughed. “You're confident.” “Not usually.” “You seem confident.” “Maybe you're making me nervous.” I raised an eyebrow. “Me?” “Yes.” I smiled into my glass. I felt genuinely amused. “What’s your name?” “Williams.” “Just Williams?” “Williams Joseph.” I nodded. “I'm Olivia.” “I know.” I frowned. “How?” He pointed toward my phone lying on the bar. My lock screen displayed my name. I laughed. “That's embarrassing.” “Not really.” He leaned slightly closer so I could hear him over the music. “What brings you here, Olivia?” I looked into his eyes. “Bad decisions.” His smile widened. “Then we're in the right place.” Something fluttered in my stomach. I took another sip. “So what's your bad decision?” His gaze dropped briefly to my lips. “I'm still deciding.” We talked. We laughed. He made me forget why I had come and somewhere between the music, the drinks, and the way Williams looked at me, I stopped thinking about everything bad in my life. He reached for my hand but I didn't pull away. Williams's fingers tightened gently around mine. “Do you want to leave?” he asked. I looked at him. The music was still pounding around us, but somehow, his voice was the only thing I could hear. “Where?” “My place.” I should have thought about it and asked more questions. Instead, I looked down at our intertwined fingers and then back at him. “Okay.” His eyes searched mine. “Are you sure?” “Yes.” He nodded, then stood up. I grabbed my purse and followed him out of the club. The cold night air hit my face the moment we stepped outside. I took a deep breath. For some reason, leaving the club with him felt completely different from sitting beside him inside. It was more real and dangerous. And yet, I didn't want to turn back. We walked towards his car. He opened the passenger door for me, and I entered inside. A few minutes later, we were driving through the city. I watched New York pass by through the window, I was wondering how I had gone from crying over my father to sitting in a stranger's car. Maybe I was crazy and this was exactly the kind of decision I'd regret in the morning. But tonight, I didn't care. Williams glanced at me. “You're quiet.” “I'm thinking.” “About?” I smiled faintly. “Whether this is a terrible idea.” “And?” “I haven't decided yet.” He chuckled. “Fair enough.” When we finally stopped outside his apartment building, I looked up at the tall structure. “This is where you live?” “Yes.” “Fancy.” “It's home.” He led me inside. The elevator ride was quiet. I could feel the tension between us without either of us saying anything. When the doors opened, we stepped into the hallway. Williams unlocked his door and looked at me one last time. “You can still change your mind.” I held his gaze. “I know.” I stepped inside and he closed the door behind us. For a moment, neither of us moved. Then I turned toward him. “Williams?” “Yes?” I smiled. “Stop thinking.” His expression changed. He stepped closer, placed one hand on my waist, and I felt my heart race a bit. “Are you sure?” I nodded. His lips met mine with no hesitation, I pulled him closer by his collar. He held my neck and drew kisses down my collarbone. I let out a moan as I wrap my legs around his torso. He placed me on his counter as he gently took off my shirt and pants leaving me in just my underwear. I could feel the heat in-between my legs. He took off his pants and walked back towards me. I wrapped my arms around his neck as he pulled me closer, placing his hands in-between my legs. I smashed my lips back on his own as I let out a loud moan and every thought I'd been carrying all evening disappeared.
