Between the Lines

Kat I barely made it back to my room at the orphanage before my body completely gave out and I collapsed. Everything in my body and soul was on fire. I wish he would have just ripped my heart out literally so I didn’t have to go through this. At least then he would have shown some compassion. No more suffering, no more pain, no more loneliness. Having the only thing in my entire life that I had to look forward to, ripped away. The moon goddess is truly cruel. I’ve never had anything of my own and she took that from me as well. They say she works in mysterious ways, but how is pairing me with someone who she knows will reject is fair. I need to leave. My mind is made up. I’m going to leave. I start to pack my things. Which isn’t much. A few shirts, some underwear, a few pairs of pants, and one pair of shoes. I put everything in my backpack, realizing how sad it is that I can fit my entire life into a backpack. The pack provided the orphanage with supplies and anything else they may need, I guess they didn’t find us that important and only gave us the minimum. The only thing I had left to do was leave a letter for Luke. I can’t tell him what happened, but I can’t just leave and have him worry about me. After that’s done I fold it up, write his name on it and leave it on the bed. I know for sure he will get it, no one else comes in here. Heck it might even be a few weeks before they notice I’m gone. I threw the backpack over my shoulder, and glanced at the door. Making sure there is not doubt when I walk through that door that it will be the last time. In my heart I know I’m doing the right thing. I might not know where I’ll go, or what I’ll do, but it will have to be better than being here. I pass through the door and its like a burden lifts from my shoulders. I can breath better every time I put one foot in front of the other. Walking out of the orphanage the sun blinds me. Leaving town before lunch time, at least everyone will be busy enough to not notice a nobody like me walking away. “Farewell Luke.” I mutter as I walk away. I will see him again one day. I pick the busiest road out of our small town. With any luck someone will let me get a ride to the next town over, and hopefully I can repeat that process until I’m far enough away from this pack to not run into any of them. I hear a car coming, throwing my arm out I extend my thumb. The universal signal for trying to hitch a ride. It take a few try’s but eventually as I walk I hear a car slow down behind me. I turn to face them as they pull up beside me. It’s a young blonde female, she looks about my same age. She rolls the window down. “You know its not safe to be out here alone.” She looked slightly concerned, but kept the dark blue Honda keeping pace with me walking. “Yea, I just need to get to the next town over.” I could smell she was human. “My car was having problems, its back there somewhere. I been walking for a long time.” I lied but it seem to put her somewhat at ease. “Hop in, I can take you into town to find a mechanic.” She flashed a pearly white smile. “Awesome. Thanks.” I quickly opened the door and scooted into the comfortable leather seats. “ I was sure I’d be walking all the way there.” She giggled as she accelerated the car. “Yea I can’t just leave you on the side of the road, you look like someone I’d go to high school with and this world just isn’t a safe place for girls like us.” “How old are you?” “18” she seemed so proud to say that was her age. “I just turned 18 today.” She looked at me with another pearly white smile. “Happy Birthday!!!” She almost screamed as she said it. She was only the second person to tell me happy birthday, but that’s already more than any other year. “What’s your name?” “Jess. You?” “Kat. It’s nice to meet you Jess.” This was the first time I had actually introduced myself to anyone outside of the pack and I could tell I liked Jess and we could definitely be friends. She was already nicer than anyone from the pack. Cory “Alpha? How are you feeling? Can I get you anything?” “Go the f**k away! I told you an hour ago I didn’t f*****g need anything.” He was halfway yelling, but I could hear the underlying pain in him voice. “Can I at least get you something for the pain? I can tell you’re hurting.” I heard the loud bang of something being thrown against the wall. “f*****g LEAVE! NOW!” More loud bangs against the wall, that will be fun to fix tomorrow. I’ll just add it to the list. “I’ll take that as a no. I’ll be available if you need me Alpha.” I left with that before he could reply and have a reason to break anything else in his office. The Alpha has been angry since his surprise discovery this morning. After he left the chow hall he went and locked hisself in his office and now I’m basically doing his job, and being yelled at for not doing it and MY job, which on a good day keeps me super busy. Manage the training, organize the business meetings, oversee the new construction, tend to urgent matters. Is that not enough to try and juggle at once now? I was so happy when I realized what happened, because every Alpha needs a mate to help level them out. They need the other half of their soul to be their true self and be the best person they can possibly be. He was wrong to reject her so quick. No wolf should ever reject their true mate. I want to talk to him about it, but its not time yet. Maybe I should talk to her. I make my way over to my office which is down the hall from the Alpha’s. Let’s see, she said she was an orphan, and it was her birthday. At least I know exactly where to find her. I crossed the grounds as quick as possible, something inside of me told me I needed to talk to her. As soon as I entered the building I caught a whiff of something intoxicating. It was my mate, what are the odds. I followed the scent to a door, surprisingly it had Kat’s name on it. I inhaled deeply. This is definitely where the scent is coming from. Maybe she has a room mate. I knock. No answer. I check the knob and its open so I decide to take a peek inside and see my mates things, and get to the source of that scent. My excitement is quickly squashed by worry as I crack the door open and hear the sounds of someone crying. I quickly rush in, but its not my mate. There is a little blonde boy sitting on the bed with a crumpled up letter in his hands. His white shirt covered in visible tear drops. He had been doing this for a while. He looks up at me. “She’s gone.” He looks back down and starts crying harder. Instantly my heart starts to accelerate. “Who’s gone? Kat’s room mate?” The little boy looks back up at me. “Kat never had a room mate. She’s gone and she’s not coming back.” He threw the crinkled letter into the floor and stood up. “What? Then who else has been in this room?!?!?” “NO ONE! That’s why she’s gone! No one here cares for her and treats her like garbage! I’m the only one that loves her here! That’s why she left! Because of people like you!!!!” The little boy shoved his way past me and ran down the hallway to his room. Fuck. That means that I’m her second chance mate. Double f**k. She left. Triple f**k. I have to tell the Alpha.
