Chapter 1: I’m Not Infected!
“I’m not infected! I swear, I’m really not infected!”
In the office, Wu Kai curled up in the corner, begging desperately. His helpless eyes darted between the two people standing far away, hoping for some sign of help. But the wound on his arm was all too visible.
“Xiao Wu, we all agreed to the rules before. You were fine with them. You can’t expect special treatment now that it’s you.”
Lin Yuan gripped the fire axe, warily watching Wu Kai, who was on the verge of mutating. People in this state were the most dangerous. If he could talk Wu Kai into leaving, it would be far better than a life-and-death struggle.
“Brother Lin, you have to believe me. I’m really not infected! I just got scratched by something. Look, the blood is still red!”
Wu Kai looked down at his arm, but his pupils suddenly constricted. The skin around his wound had started to curl in a strange way, and dark lines were spreading beneath the surface of his skin, creeping along his arm like special effects makeup.
In an instant, his whole body began to tremble.
“He has to leave. If he turns into a zombie, neither of us will make it!”
The female office worker hiding behind the desk spoke hurriedly. Her usually cold and glamorous face finally showed signs of panic.
What she said seemed to calm the already collapsing Wu Kai. His bloodshot eyes filled with resentment. “Shen Rong! It’s all because of you! If you hadn’t pushed me, I wouldn’t have been caught by the zombie!”
Out of nowhere, Wu Kai found a surge of strength. He stood up and charged at Shen Rong, who was hiding behind the desk, moving with a frenzy that made him resemble a fully mutated zombie.
At this moment, he still had some of his human mind left, so he deliberately avoided Lin Yuan, who was holding the fire axe.
“Lin Yuan, stop him!”
Shen Rong instinctively shrank under the desk. Although she was usually dignified and aloof, all that poise vanished in the face of this madman.
Lin Yuan took a deep breath. One zombie was already dangerous enough. If there was another, he wouldn’t be able to handle it. Even though his whole body was trembling, his will to survive drove him to raise the fire axe and aim for Wu Kai’s head.
No matter how hard a skull might be, it couldn’t withstand a blow from a fire axe. With a sickening c***k, Wu Kai’s skull shattered. The axe split his head nearly in two, and blood mixed with brain matter sprayed across the desk.
Under the desk, Shen Rong was trembling all over. Right in front of her was Wu Kai’s mutilated head. Blood and brain matter dripped from the desk, landing just inches away from her. A wave of nausea gripped her, and though she retched several times, nothing came out.
The psychological impact of killing someone hit Lin Yuan hard. He felt a cold sweat break out all over his body, and the strength seemed to drain from him. He staggered back a few steps, leaning against the wall before slumping to the ground.
After a few deep breaths, the dizziness slowly subsided.
[Ding! Zombie Evolution System successfully loaded!]
[The apocalypse has arrived, and you’ve unfortunately been infected with the zombie virus. However, thanks to your strong willpower, you’ve retained your human consciousness. You’re filled with resentment and determined to take revenge on those who caused you to turn into a zombie.]
[Go on, bite Shen Rong! She’s the one who pushed you!]
[Mission Reward: Agility. (You are different from ordinary zombies and possess enhanced agility.)]
Lin Yuan froze for a moment, not even registering Shen Rong’s cries for help as he stared repeatedly at the strange virtual prompt in front of him.
“What the hell, I’m not infected!”
Panicked, Lin Yuan quickly checked his body, making sure there were no injuries. Only then did he breathe a sigh of relief. “Wait a second, this Zombie Evolution System was supposed to belong to Wu Kai!”
Earlier, when the zombies had chased them, Shen Rong had pushed Wu Kai, which led to him getting scratched. Based on the description, it was obvious that this zombie evolution system originally belonged to Wu Kai, who had now turned into a zombie.
But after Wu Kai’s head was blown off, the system had somehow transferred to Lin Yuan.
Shen Rong finally broke free from Wu Kai’s grip, losing a handful of hair in the process. Clutching her scalp, she crawled away from the desk in panic.
“Lin Yuan! It wasn’t me who pushed him! It was Jiang Yaojin who shoved me, and I bumped into you two. I’m a victim too!”
Given the situation, Shen Rong knew she had to explain everything clearly. If this small misunderstanding escalated, it could endanger her life.
Jiang Yaojin was Lin Yuan and Wu Kai’s boss. Shen Rong was the boss of a neighboring company. Their businesses had little interaction, and they had only gotten to know each other in the past few difficult days.
Earlier, the group had split up to search the office area for supplies. As they returned, three zombies appeared out of nowhere. Just as they were about to reach the door, Jiang Yaojin had pushed Shen Rong forward, leaving Lin Yuan and Wu Kai trapped outside with her.
Although Jiang Yaojin had been pursuing Shen Rong romantically over the past few days, when faced with a life-or-death crisis, he had no hesitation in sacrificing the woman he was trying to win over.
As Shen Rong crawled closer, Lin Yuan noticed a pungent smell of urine and instinctively glanced at her lower body.
Her pencil skirt was torn, and her stockings were in tatters. The inner sides of her legs were clearly marked with wet stains. She had crawled across the floor, leaving two visible trails of moisture behind her.
“Stay away from me!”
Shen Rong froze, unable to believe that the usually kind and helpful Lin Yuan had become so harsh. But after experiencing such a life-threatening crisis, she seemed to realize the change in their dynamic.
She obediently curled up in the corner, finally noticing the dampness between her legs. Her face turned from pale to crimson as she awkwardly tugged her skirt lower.
Lin Yuan opened his system panel and called out to Shen Rong.
“Can you see anything?”
The zombie evolution system had come to him in such a strange way that Lin Yuan couldn’t help but wonder if everyone had one, or if only Wu Kai did. He urgently needed to know if Shen Rong could see it too.
“If anyone asks, I only know that Wu Kai turned into a zombie. Killing zombies isn’t illegal.”
Shen Rong’s voice trembled. She thought Lin Yuan was concerned about this and was quick to show where her loyalty lay. From the direction of her gaze, it seemed clear she couldn’t see the system’s information panel. This made Lin Yuan feel relieved—having the system all to himself was definitely more advantageous.
Once he had calmed down, Lin Yuan carefully considered Shen Rong. The mission only required him to bite her, without specifying whether she had to live or die. It seemed that the system assumed the zombie virus was incurable at this stage.
“Shen Rong, come over here. I need to talk to you.”
Lin Yuan gestured with his hand. The intimidating aura from earlier, after he had killed someone, left Shen Rong too scared to resist. After a brief hesitation, she crawled over.
“Lin Yuan, I swear it wasn’t me who pushed you! Please believe me!”
She knew Lin Yuan and Wu Kai worked for the same company and feared he would take out his anger on her.
“I believe you.”
As soon as she let her guard down, Lin Yuan grabbed her and pinned her to the floor, straddling her.
“Lin Yuan, what are you doing?! Let me go!”
Caught off guard, Shen Rong screamed in fear, thinking he was about to assault her.
“Stay still! Just bear with it for a moment!”
Lin Yuan stared at Shen Rong’s smooth collarbone, swallowing hard before leaning down and biting into it.
Thankfully, only a few days had passed since the apocalypse, so even without bathing, there wasn’t much body odor. As he bit down on her soft skin, Lin Yuan hesitated for a moment, then clenched his teeth and bit down hard.
Immediately, a metallic, sweet taste filled his mouth. It felt like nectar, and instinctively, he sucked at the wound.
“Ahh!”
Shen Rong’s body went limp beneath him, and she let out a low, seductive moan. Her neck reflexively tensed as her cheek brushed against Lin Yuan’s.
[Ding! Mission Complete!]
