Beneath the surface

The sun dipped low in the sky, casting a warm golden hue over the small, modest home of the Philips family. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of simmering stew, a comforting aroma that had filled their kitchen for years. Emily Philips, a bright and spirited young woman of twenty, was in her room, lost in a book, when she heard the familiar sound of her parents’ voices drifting through the thin walls. “Do you really think this is what’s best for her, Margaret?” her father, Mr. Philips, asked, his voice tinged with concern. “Emily deserves a choice, not to be sold off like some commodity.” Mrs. Philips sighed, her voice soft yet resolute. “It’s not like that, Thomas. The Lucas family has been good to us. They’ve provided for us for generations. This marriage will secure our future, and Emily will be taken care of.” Emily’s heart raced as she listened, her mind racing with a mix of emotions. She had always known that her parents held a deep loyalty to the Lucas family, having served them for as long as she could remember. But the thought of being married off to Liam Lucas, the arrogant heir to the Lucas fortune, filled her with dread. “Liam is not the man I would choose for her,” Mr. Philips continued, his voice rising slightly. “He’s spoiled and entitled. I worry about how he’ll treat her.” “Thomas, we don’t have a choice,” Mrs. Philips replied, her tone firm. “This is a good match. The Lucas family has wealth and influence. Emily will have a life of comfort. We can’t let our pride get in the way of her future.” Emily felt a lump form in her throat. She had always dreamed of love and partnership, not a life dictated by her parents’ decisions. She had seen how Liam treated others—his arrogance, his dismissive attitude. The thought of being trapped in a marriage with him made her stomach churn. As she sat there, torn between her parents’ wishes and her own desires, she heard her father’s voice again, softer this time. “I just want her to be happy. I want her to have a choice.” Emily’s heart ached at his words. She wanted to scream, to tell them that she didn’t want this life, that she wanted to choose her own path. But instead, she remained silent, listening as her parents continued to discuss her fate. “Perhaps we can talk to Mr. Lucas,” her father suggested. “Maybe we can convince him to let Emily have a say in this.” “Do you really think they’ll listen?” Mrs. Philips replied, a hint of sadness in her voice. “The Lucases are powerful. They don’t take kindly to dissent.” Emily’s mind raced. She had to do something. She couldn’t let her life be decided for her. Gathering her courage, she stood up and walked toward the door, determined to confront her parents and express her feelings. But just as she reached for the doorknob, she heard her mother’s voice again, this time filled with resignation. “We must accept our place, Thomas. This is how the world works. We serve them, and in return, they provide for us. It’s a fair trade.” Emily’s heart sank. She felt trapped, caught in a web of expectations and obligations. With a heavy heart, she stepped back from the door, retreating to her room. She needed to think, to find a way to escape this fate that loomed over her like a dark cloud.
