Chapter 1: Dangerous Play
Chapter 1: Dangerous Play
(Elara's POV)
Rain pounded against the windshield, creating a cocoon of sound around us. My body burned with a fire I couldn't control. Lucian's scent—pine, smoke, and raw power—filled the confined space of his luxury car.
My face was buried against his throat, my lips dragging across his heated skin. I couldn't think straight. Something was wrong with me.
I felt his throat vibrate as he spoke, his voice rough like gravel.
"Just playing around?" he asked.
I lifted my gaze to meet his. Those gray eyes watched me with predatory intent, half-lidded and dark with desire. The Alpha King of the Midnight Howlers pack shouldn't look at an omega like me this way.
"Just playing around," I echoed, my voice sounding strange to my own ears.
Lucian's large hand slid up my spine, sending electricity racing through my veins. "Don't hold me accountable later," he warned, his breath hot against my ear. "This is just physical. No mate bond. No promises."
I nodded, not trusting my voice. The wolfsbane—that's what it was. Someone had slipped it into my drink at the pack gathering. The ceremonial wine had tasted different, bitter underneath the sweetness.
His mouth claimed mine again, and I surrendered to the haze of desire.
The rain intensified, matching the rhythm of our movements. The windows fogged as our bodies moved together in the confined space of his backseat. My fingers clawed at his shoulders, bunching the expensive fabric of his shirt.
I lost track of time as we tangled together. My mind registered only sensations: his hands gripping my hips, the low growls rumbling from his chest, the scent of our mingled desire filling the car.
At the peak of our passion, I felt my control slipping. Sally pushed forward, desperate to claim this Alpha. My teeth found his shoulder, and I bit down, hard.
He hissed, one hand flying to tighten around my neck. "Careful with those fangs, little omega..."
I trembled, burying my face in the crook of his neck. I'd almost marked him. The Alpha King. The thought sent a fresh wave of heat through me even as alarm bells rang distantly in my mind.
When it was over, I reached for my boots that had somehow ended up on the floor. My movements were clumsy, my limbs heavy. Sweat cooled on my skin as reality began to seep back through the wolfsbane-induced haze.
Lucian watched me, his shirt unbuttoned, revealing the defined muscles of his chest. I could feel his Alpha gaze tracking my every move.
"Did you consume something tainted at the gathering?" he asked, his voice deceptively casual.
I paused, one boot in hand. Had he noticed? Would he care that someone had drugged me? I was just an omega, newly accepted into the pack, with no connections and no protection.
"Thank you, Alpha," I said finally, keeping my voice emotionless.
He raised an eyebrow at my formality. After what we'd just done, it was almost comical. But this was all it could ever be—a mistake, a moment of weakness.
"Would you like to join me for dinner sometime?" I offered mechanically, the words an empty social nicety.
Without waiting for his response, I pushed the car door open and stepped into the rain. The cold droplets helped clear my head as I walked away, my gait unsteady from our encounter and the lingering effects of the wolfsbane.
I pulled out my phone with trembling fingers and called for a rideshare. While waiting, I texted Clara, my assistant at the research lab.
"Not feeling well. Heading home. See you tomorrow."
Her response came quickly: "Are you okay? Do you need anything?"
"I'm fine," I typed back, the lie bitter on my fingers.
I wasn't fine. Someone at the pack gathering had drugged me with wolfsbane. I'd ended up in the Alpha's car, giving in to desires I'd kept carefully buried. As a newly accepted omega in the Midnight Howlers pack, I'd worked hard to earn my position as a medical researcher in the pack hospital. Many resented me for it. An omega shouldn't have such a prestigious role, they whispered.
This incident was likely their attempt to humiliate me, to make me act like the wild, uncontrollable creature they believed all omegas to be.
The rideshare pulled up, and a human driver named Jake smiled at me from the front seat. "Rough night?" he asked, noticing my disheveled appearance.
"You have no idea," I murmured, sinking into the backseat.
As we drove away, I couldn't help glancing back at Lucian's car, still parked where we'd stopped. In the distance, I saw a tall figure approaching it—Finn, Lucian's Beta.
Great. Now the Alpha's right-hand man would know about our encounter too. News would spread through the pack like wildfire.
I closed my eyes, wondering how I would face everyone tomorrow. The wolves who had drugged me would be watching for signs of my humiliation. I couldn't give them that satisfaction.
I was an omega, yes. But I wouldn't be their victim.
(Lucian's POV)
I stared at the small bloodstain on my trousers—evidence of her enthusiasm, her loss of control. The bite mark on my shoulder throbbed pleasantly. She had been close, dangerously close, to marking me.
The car still smelled of her—vanilla and something wild beneath it. Her wolf had been close to the surface. Wolfsbane could do that, strip away human restraint and bring the animal forward.
Someone had drugged her. I knew the signs, had seen them before. The dilated pupils, the heightened sensitivity, the way her skin had flushed with unnatural heat.
A tap on my window interrupted my thoughts. I didn't need to look to know who it was.
I lowered the window, and Finn's amused face appeared, rain dripping from his sandy blonde hair.
"Well, well, well," he drawled, a grin spreading across his face. "That was quite a show. I thought your car was going to tip over at one point."
I reached for my cigarettes, tapping one out and lighting it. The smoke filled my lungs, calming the Alpha inside me that still wanted to chase after the omega who had just left.
"Is there something you need, Finn?" I asked, exhaling slowly.
He leaned against the car, seemingly unbothered by the rain. "That was the new omega, wasn't it? What's her name... Elara? The one who just got accepted into our pack a few months ago?"
I took another drag from my cigarette, neither confirming nor denying.
"She used to be with Damon, you know," Finn continued, watching me closely. "That Beta from the Crimson Claw pack."
That caught my attention, though I kept my expression neutral. Damon—a troublemaker, ambitious and cruel. The thought of Elara with him made my wolf bristle.
She'd bitten me, nearly marked me. Yet she'd been involved with a Beta from our rival pack? The information didn't fit with the woman I'd just held in my arms, the researcher who kept to herself and worked diligently at our pack hospital.
"Is that so?" I said finally, flicking ash from my cigarette, watching it scatter in the rain outside my car window. The scent of Elara still hung heavy in the air - wild jasmine mixed with something primal that tugged at my wolf.
Finn leaned against my car, his knowing smirk irritating me more than I cared to admit.
"You're putting on quite the show," he said, watching me through the open window. "Keep pretending you don't care."
I took another long drag, letting the smoke fill my lungs before responding. The taste did nothing to erase hers from my mouth.
"And what exactly should I care about?" I kept my voice deliberately casual.
I gave him a measured smile, the kind that made lesser wolves back away. Finn just grinned wider.
