Chapter 1:The click defect
The rain over Kroy Wen fell in a relentless, gray sheet, hammering against the reinforced
viewport of the eighty-second floor. Down on the streets, the world was nothing more than a blurred maze of neon green and corporate blue, choked by the endless evening commute of thousands of sedated citizens. It was beautiful, in a bleak, synthetic sort of way.
Liam Silva watched a single droplet track slowly down the glass, wondering if the sky felt a
sudden sense of relief when it finally let go of the water, or if it was just executing an atmospheric command.
He laughed quietly—a dry, humorless sound. Stupid thought. Normal people in this city didn’t waste their cognitive bandwidth wondering about the
feelings of the weather. But then, normal citizens didn't have to live with a constant, mechanical feedback loop echoing in the back of their skulls.
Click. The sound was sharp, metallic, and entirely internal. It vibrated against the delicate bones of
his inner ear like a dying hard drive trying to spin up under too much voltage. Immediately after, a wave of digital static blurred his vision. His Hyper Analysis Processor—the little goldplated parasite nestled deep against his hippocampus—was attempting to force a focusoptimization command into his brain. And, as always, Liam’s rebellious neural pathways were spitting the programming right back out.
He closed his eyes, waiting for the phantom static to clear from his retinas. When he opened
them, the blue, clinical light of his terminal screen was waiting for him, displaying a neat row of resolved diagnostic queues.
"Liam, strike fifty-six," a voice barked, slicing through his lingering headache. Liam flinched, his heart rate spiking as his gaze snapped away from the viewport. Floating
just inches above his mechanical keyboard was the holographic projection of his administrative supervisor. The AI manifested as an average-looking man in a sharp corporate suit, but its chest pulsed with a cold, rhythmic reddish light—the telltale indicator of an active automated oversight program.
"Fifty-six?" Liam cleared his throat, trying to smooth out the sudden tremor in his voice.
"For what? My diagnostic queue is completely clear. I just closed out three routing anomalies in Sector 3.""For cognitive truancy during active billing hours," the AI replied, its voice a flat, synthesized
baritone that offered no room for negotiation. "Your HAP telemetry shows zero analytical
activity for the last three minutes and twelve seconds. You were daydreaming, Liam."
"I was processing," Liam lied, adjusting the frayed collar of his technician's jacket. "The
diagnostic logs for Sector 4’s routing node are highly complex. I was visualizing the architecture
in my head to avoid running a heavy diagnostic sweep on the local server."
The red light on the AI’s chest pulsed in rapid, aggressive successions. "Strike fifty-seven for
attempting to deceive an administrative unit. While your 'Click' condition prevents this office
from reading your direct cognitive telemetry, your micro-expressions, dilated pupils, and
elevated skin temperature are mathematically inconsistent with logical problem-solving."
Before Liam could muster another excuse, the hologram vanished with a sharp hiss of ozone,
leaving behind only the cold, blank glare of his monitor.
Liam let out a slow, shuddering breath and leaned back in his chair, rubbing his temples.
The skin around his HAP port at the base of his neck felt hot, a common side effect of a rejected
neural command.
Around him, the massive, auditorium-like floor of the Emotional Maintenance Office
hummed with the quiet, eerie focus of ninety-six other technicians. They sat packed together in
identical cubicles, separated only by thin raecemium desk dividers. Raecemium was a miracle of
the post-war reconstruction: dense, completely soundproof, and capable of isolating a worker so
entirely that the man in cubicle 42 could suffer a catastrophic psychological break and the
woman in cubicle 43 wouldn't hear a single sob.
The system kept everyone balanced, productive, and numb.
As Liam lowered his hands, his raecemium divider slid down with a soft hiss. His
neighboring coworker, a thirty-something technician named Jared, turned his head toward
Liam. Jared’s eyes carried that familiar, glazed-over blue sheen—the physical indicator of a HAP
unit operating at maximum efficiency.
"You should let the terminal run a diagnostic on your chip, Liam," Jared said, his voice
entirely devoid of pitch or urgency. "Your stress metrics are projecting outward. It is highly
inefficient to argue with the oversight AI. When my chip detects an elevated cortisol level, it
dampens my amygdala within three milliseconds. I feel completely at peace. You should want
that."
"I like my cortisol right where it is, Jared," Liam muttered, pulling his keyboard closer.
Jared blinked slowly, his face blank. "That is illogical. Suffering is an obsolete evolutionary
trait. The corporate mainframe has optimized our emotional baseline for maximum comfort. To
reject it is to choose dysfunction.""Yeah. Well, dysfunction is my specialty," Liam said, tapping a key to raise his raecemium
barrier, cutting off Jared's hollow gaze. Jared was the perfect citizen. If he felt a wave of existential dread, his HAP fired a microcurrent, replacing the panic with a warm, artificial sense of corporate content. Except for Liam. His genetic defect—popularly known in the medical slums as "The Click"—was a statistical
anomaly. His brain simply refused to let the HAP take the wheel. But while the aristocracy viewed Click patients as broken gearwheels in their perfect machine, Liam’s defect had a bizarre, unintended side effect: it left his natural, unassisted IQ sitting at a staggering 165.
Because his brain had to do all the heavy analytical lifting manually, he could see the raw,
objective matrix of human emotions without being forced to feel what the central server wanted him to feel.
He was the best Emotional Maintenance Officer in the department because he actually
understood what real, messy, unfiltered human suffering looked like. He didn't need an algorithm to tell him when a human mind was breaking; he could read the desperation in the logs.
When the HAP network suffered a virus, a regional crash, or a hardware failure, normal citizens—who had spent their entire lives emotionally sedated—suddenly faced the raw, violent rush of real human feelings all at once. They didn't know how to handle anger. They didn't know how to process grief. They panicked, became dangerous, and tore their own lives apart.
Liam's job was to dive into those fractured neural logs, stabilize their core metrics, and guide
them back into the compliant, peaceful net. His terminal suddenly chimed, a high-priority notification flashing across his screen in
aggressive, bleeding amber text:
[WARNING: INCOMING NEURAL DISTRESS CALL - SECTOR 4 RESIDENTIAL] [CRITICAL DISTRESS LEVEL: 4] [TELEMETRY: SEVERE HAP MALFUNCTION / COGNITIVE SPIKE DETECTION]
Liam pulled his heavy headset over his ears, his fingers flying across the manual physical
keyboard as he bypassed the standard AI sorting filters. His heart did a strange, erratic flutter in his chest. A level-four distress call from the residential sector was rare; usually, the local routing AI suppressed malfunctions before they could cascade this far.
He clicked his cursor over the green accept button. He didn't know it yet, but this was the
exact moment his quiet, invisible life in the shadows of Kroy Wen was about to be utterly destroyed.
