"Is it just a coincidence?" asked Rachel, still in disbelief.
"Possible. Weren't you adopted by John Carter? "
"Yes..."
"Do you know anything about your biological parents?"
"No. I just mysteriously appeared in front of the Carter home. That's the story I have been told."
"Didn't you try to find out?", asked Jason with intrigue.
"I didn't have any information to start with. Unlike what everyone thinks, the Carters aren't very fond of me", said Rachel helplessly.
She remembered how, even as a child, she was reminded by her siblings every single day that she was adopted. She had asked John multiple times about her real parents but was always answered with scolding and beatings.
"I see."
"I still don't see how I can be related to the deceased Lunas of the Silver Moon pack. Unless you think that I am some illegitimate child born out of wedlock to someone of their genes?"
"I know it's a bit far-fetched, but we cannot ignore the coincidences, especially the similarities to my great-grandmother, Rosalyn."
"I get that. Just that it's difficult to link anything right now."
"I know. Just wanted to let you know, that's all."
"I am surprised how nobody else from the Silver Moon pack noticed."
"I can understand, since all the photographs and memories of Rosalyn were destroyed."
"What? Why?!"
"Rachel?" came a familiar voice from two tables behind. Rachel turned around and saw Samuel seated with another guy. s**t. Rachel tried to ignore him, but he stood up and walked to their table.
"What a surprise! My lovely sister is bunking at work and having a date", said Samuel mockingly. He looked at Jason and scanned him from head to toe.
"I didn't know your type was 'alphas'." Jason felt irritated as he glared at Samuel.
"What do you want, Samuel?"
"Just wanted to say hi to my beloved sister. Sorry if I disturbed you guys. Should I get you guys a room?"
"Can you stop acting so cheap? Oh no, I forgot you don't know how to", spat back Rachel, and Jason snickered. The one thing that Samuel hated the most was being humiliated and belittled by Rachel.
"b***h!" Samuel caught her arm. Before Samuel could blink, Jason punched him, and he flew back to hit a nearby chair.
"You son of...", he stopped midway when he saw the glare in Jason's eyes and his canines slightly protruding.
"Jason, let's leave", said Rachel getting up in a hurry to avoid any further commotion.
They came out of the café and took a turn towards the train station.
"Sorry about that", said Rachel with an embarrassed expression.
"I am sorry that I hit your brother." he replied.
"Don't worry. He asked for it", laughed Rachel. "Thanks, Jason, for all the information", she said with a warm smile. Rachel really felt touched by his intention to help her.
"Mystery is my favorite genre." he joked. They laughed. Jason couldn't help but notice how charming her smile was.
"Alright, see you then. I will call you if I find anything else."
"Sure. Thanks again."
Rachel reached back home and straight away went to her laptop. She started googling about the Crescent Moon pack and about Rosalyn Peters. She could hardly find any data, but she found a few links pointing to an archive with the web address https://lupus.com. However, she couldn't read the documents without authenticated credentials. All the content was blocked and password protected.
I need to find a way to read these.
I never really felt the need to know about my real parents. Honestly, for most of my life, I hated them for abandoning me and even more for leaving me with the cruel Carters. Is it possible that my parents are related to Jason's great-grandmother?
She again got lost in her thoughts.
Alfred had been missing the family dinners for the past few days. Rachel felt relieved as she wasn't yet ready to face him or act polite to him. She didn't want to remember the horrible night for the sake of her sane mind. Albus had also been busy with work. Avery was almost done with her dinner.
"Today's lemon tart was amazing, wasn't it?"
"Absolutely", agreed Rachel.
"By the way, did you get news about your brother?"
"What news?" Rachel stiffened for a moment. She remembered the incident at the café between Jason and Samuel.
"He will be starting as a clerical intern in your department."
"What?!!"
"He asked me for it when we met at the party. And I thought why not? He is your brother after all."
"Great!" said Rachel, with a hint of frustration.
"I know! You could see each other every day. You owe me!"
"Yes, I definitely do." Rachel got up from her chair before her actual frustration became obvious to others.
Damn it! I have to see that dork's face every day from now on.
As soon as she reached her room, she dialed a number. Her call was picked up in two rings.
"Rachel! How are you doing?" asked Ryan in a worried tone. He had heard from Avery about her bruises after the party.
"Hi, Ryan. I am much better. Thanks. How are you?" Rachel felt embarrassed at realizing that Ryan knew about their fight.
"I am good. If this is about work, then don't worry. You can take as much time as you need to recover completely."
"No, it's not about work. But thanks, I will resume next week."
"Ok. What is it, Rachel?"
"I just happened to come across a website named lupus.com. I assume it is some kind of archive. Do you have any idea about it?"
"I do.. but it is only accessible to all the elders of the packs."
"Like Alpha Albus?"
"Yes, definitely him."
"Okay.."
"Why the sudden interest in it?"
"Just curious. I like reading history and stuff. Mystery is my favorite genre", laughed Rachel, recalling Jason's dialogue.
"Okay. Just that it has some sensitive and historically critical information. Anyway, you will get access after you become the Luna."
"Only if I become the Luna."
"Why did you say that?"
"Just kidding. Sorry if I bothered you with this lame thing."
"Mention not. As I told you, call me whenever you want to talk."
"Hmmm"
"By whenever, I mean literally whenever."
"Sure. You can't take back your words", joked Rachel.
"I don't intend to."
"Bye Ryan. Thanks."
"Bye Rachel. Take care."
