Part 1_ The Night Everything Changed
Rain poured heavily across the city as Elena Moretti hurried down the crowded street with her old black umbrella shaking in her hand. Cold wind brushed against her face while passing cars splashed dirty water onto the sidewalk. Normally, she would have complained. Tonight, she was too exhausted to care. Her phone vibrated again. Another message from the hospital. Elena closed her eyes for a second before opening the text. Payment overdue. Her chest tightened painfully. The hospital bills for her younger brother kept increasing every week. No matter how hard she worked, it was never enough. She worked morning shifts at a café. Night shifts at a restaurant. And sometimes cleaning jobs during weekends. Still, they were drowning in debt. She crossed the road carefully before stopping in front of a small apartment building with cracked walls and broken windows. The elevator had stopped working months ago, so she slowly climbed the stairs to the fourth floor. The moment she opened the apartment door, a weak voice greeted her. “Elena?” Her tired face immediately softened. “I’m home.” Marco sat on the couch wrapped in a blanket. He looked pale again. Too pale. At sixteen, he should have been worrying about school and girls, not hospital treatments and medicine. “You should be sleeping,” Elena said gently. Marco smiled weakly. “And miss seeing my favorite sister?” “You only have one sister.” “Exactly.” She laughed softly despite her exhaustion. Moments like this were the only reason she kept going. After their parents died five years ago, Elena became everything for Marco. Sister. Mother. Protector. And every day felt harder than the last. Marco noticed the stress in her eyes immediately. “The hospital called again?” Elena stayed quiet. That silence answered everything. Marco looked down guiltily. “I’m sorry.” “Don’t apologize,” Elena said quickly. “None of this is your fault.” “But because of me, you work all day.” “Because of you, I keep fighting.” His eyes softened with emotion. Before either of them could speak again, loud knocking echoed through the apartment. Elena froze instantly. Her stomach tightened. Not again. Another knock came, harder this time. Marco looked nervous. “Debt collectors?” Elena forced herself to stay calm. “It’s okay.” But it wasn’t. She walked slowly toward the door and opened it carefully. Two large men stood outside. Both looked impatient. “The payment is late,” one of them said immediately. “I just need more time,” Elena replied quietly. “You already said that last week.” Elena swallowed nervously. “Please. My brother is sick.” The taller man looked past her into the apartment before speaking coldly. “Our boss is losing patience.” Fear crawled into Elena’s chest. Borrowing money from dangerous people had been her biggest mistake. But she had no choice. Marco needed treatment. The men finally left after another warning, but the fear remained long after the door closed. That night, after Marco fell asleep, Elena sat alone at the kitchen table staring at unpaid bills spread across the surface. Rent. Medicine. Electricity. Hospital fees. Debt. The pressure felt unbearable. Then her phone buzzed. A message from her best friend Sofia. Temporary event job tonight. Huge pay. Interested? Elena immediately typed back. How much? The answer came seconds later. Enough to cover two months of bills. Elena stared at the screen in shock. Two months. That kind of money could change everything. Where? Private event. Rich people. Easy work. Wear black. That should have been her warning. But desperation makes people ignore danger. And Elena was desperate. Three hours later, Elena stood outside one of the most luxurious mansions she had ever seen. Expensive cars filled the driveway while armed guards stood at every entrance. Guests wearing elegant masks and designer clothing walked through the large golden doors laughing softly. Everything about the place screamed wealth. And danger. Sofia hurried toward her wearing a black dress. “You made it.” Elena looked around nervously. “Whose mansion is this?” Sofia hesitated for a second. “Just stay professional and everything will be fine.” That was not an answer. Before Elena could ask more questions, another worker handed them trays of champagne. “Don’t wander around,” the woman warned. “And stay away from restricted areas.” Restricted areas? Elena already hated this place. Still, she needed the money. So she worked. For the next hour, she moved carefully through crowds of rich guests while soft music filled the mansion. Everyone looked powerful. Politicians. Business owners. Men surrounded by bodyguards. The atmosphere felt strange. Too tense. Too secretive. Then suddenly the entire room became quieter. Guests moved aside immediately. Fear spread through the crowd. Elena turned slowly. And saw him. Alessandro De Luca. Tall. Cold. Terrifyingly handsome. He wore a perfectly fitted black suit and a dark silver mask that covered part of his face, but nothing could hide the power surrounding him. The room practically bowed around him. Every movement he made carried confidence and control. Danger followed him like a shadow. His gray eyes scanned the room calmly. Then stopped on her. Elena’s breath caught. For one strange second, she could not look away. Something about him felt different. Not human. His gaze remained on her a little too long before he continued walking. And somehow, that terrified her even more. Sofia grabbed Elena’s arm quickly. “Don’t stare at him.” “Who is he?” Elena whispered. Sofia looked shocked. “You seriously don’t know?” Elena shook her head. “That’s Alessandro De Luca.” Even hearing the name changed the atmosphere around them. Elena had heard rumors before. Everyone had. Stories about mafia connections. Disappearances. Violence. Power. Most people were too afraid to even say his name loudly. And now she was standing inside his mansion. Wonderful. About an hour later, Elena accidentally took the wrong hallway while searching for the kitchen. The music slowly faded behind her. The mansion suddenly became quieter. Too quiet. She looked around nervously. Wrong direction. Before she could turn back, angry voices echoed nearby. Curious and nervous, Elena stepped closer carefully. Then froze. Inside the room ahead, several men stood around a large table covered with documents and guns. One of them was Alessandro. Another man was on his knees begging desperately. Fear shot through Elena instantly. “You betrayed me,” Alessandro said coldly. “Please, Alessandro,” the man begged. “I can explain.” “You already had your chance.” A gunshot exploded through the room. Elena gasped softly. Too softly for a normal person to hear. But Alessandro heard it immediately. His head snapped toward the doorway. Their eyes met. And Elena realized one terrifying truth. She had just become a witness. Panic filled her chest. She turned and ran. Fast footsteps echoed behind her. Elena rushed through the hallway, her breathing shaking violently. She nearly slipped while turning the corner. She needed to escape. Now. But before she reached the stairs, a strong hand suddenly grabbed her wrist and slammed her gently against the wall. Elena gasped. Alessandro stood in front of her. Close enough for her to feel his body heat. Close enough to smell his expensive cologne mixed with something darker. Wild. Dangerous. His gray eyes stared into hers intensely. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then something strange happened. Alessandro’s expression changed slightly. Shock. Confusion. Possession. His grip tightened around her wrist. His wolf reacted violently inside him. Mate. The word echoed through his mind like thunder. Impossible. After all these years, fate chooses now? And her? A poor human girl standing in his mansion shaking with fear. Elena’s heart pounded painfully. There was something terrifying about the way he looked at her. Not like a normal man. Like a predator. “What did you see?” Alessandro asked quietly. Elena tried to pull away. “Please… I won’t tell anyone.” His eyes darkened. “You’re afraid of me.” “You killed someone!” “That man betrayed me.” “That doesn’t make murder okay!” For a second, Alessandro almost smiled. Most people were too terrified to speak to him that way. But not her. Interesting. “You shouldn’t have come here tonight,” he said calmly. “I didn’t know this was your mansion!” “And now you do.” Fear burned inside Elena’s chest. She needed to escape before something terrible happened. But Alessandro still held her wrist. And the strange thing was… Part of him did not want to let go. His wolf had completely awakened. Possessive instincts filled his body. Mine. The thought came naturally. Dangerously naturally. Alessandro hated it immediately. He never wanted a mate. Love made people weak. Feelings destroyed lives. He learned that lesson a long time ago. Yet standing this close to Elena felt different from anything he had ever experienced. Her scent alone was driving his wolf insane. “Elena!” Sofia’s voice suddenly echoed nearby. Alessandro’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Elena,” he repeated softly. Hearing her name from his lips sent chills down her spine. She finally pulled her wrist free and stepped back. “I just want to leave.” Alessandro stared at her silently. Normally, witnesses disappeared. No exceptions. But killing her suddenly felt impossible. Because she was his mate. And fate had just changed everything. To be continued…
